|Avery Table Tents 5305|| Mohamed Hassan: "the causes of the revolution far beyond Tunisia Ben Ali and his party. "|
Tunisians brought down the dictator Ben Ali. Today, they continue to fight against his men to head the transitional government. In this new chapter of our series "Understanding the Muslim world," Mohamed Hassan * ((photo-cons) explains the implications of the revolution of Tunisia and its root causes: how nationalism Liberal advocated by Tunisia under Bourguiba interests Western, plunging people into poverty, how a repressive state has put in place to maintain this system, why dictatorships in the Arab world are caused to fall, and how Islam became the condom imperialism
(Gregory Lalieu Michel Collon)
In December 2010, riots broke out in Tunisia. A month later, President Ben Ali fled the country after twenty-three year reign. What are the causes of this revolution? And why is it popular movement succeeded in bringing down the dictator where other attempts have failed?
For there to be a revolution, it is necessary that people refuse to live as before and that the ruling class is no longer able to govern as before. On December 17, 2010, Mohamed Bouazizi, a young seller of fruits and vegetables, has sacrificed out of desperation after police had confiscated his goods himself, and that local authorities have to stop working. The conditions were ripe for a revolution broke out in Tunisia Bouazizi and suicide was the trigger.
Indeed, the Tunisians did not want to live as before: they were not accepting corruption, police repression, lack of freedom, unemployment, etc.. Moreover, the ruling class could no longer govern as before. Corruption under Ben Ali had taken a phenomenal amount while the majority of the population had to face insecurity. To maintain this status, police repression would be higher but it had reached its limits. The ruling elite was completely disconnected from the people for whom there was no interlocutor. Therefore, when popular revolts broke out, the ruling class had no choice but to quell the violence. But with the determination of the people, the repression reached its limit. This is one of the keys to the success of the popular revolution of Tunisia: it managed to reach all segments of society, including members of the army and police who sympathized with the demonstrators. The repressive apparatus could no longer function as before either. If a revolt occurs but is not able to combine different segments society, it can not lead a revolution.
Even after the departure of Ben Ali, the protests continue. The situation that Tunisians refuse is not the result of one man? For
signs "Ben Ali emerges" signs were followed by "CDR releases. Tunisians are attacking the president's political party because they fear that one of his men to take power. But in reality, the root causes that led to revolt Tunisians far outweigh Ben Ali and the RCD. It is not enough to turn the president for the people earns his freedom and improves living conditions.
corruption, unemployment, social inequality ... What are the effects of imperialist domination of the West over Tunisia. For Tunisia, after independence, became a project of the United States.
What do you mean by imperialism?
Imperialism is the process by which capitalist powers politically and economically dominated by foreign countries. Western multinationals plunder the resources of Africa, Latin America and Asia. They find opportunities for capital they will accumulate and exploit cheap labor market. I say that multinationals are not buying as they plunder the resources at their fair value and the local people not benefiting from these riches. And this looting would not be possible if these countries operated, there were no leaders to defend the interests of multinationals. These leaders are getting richer in the process. They constitute the so-called comprador bourgeoisie. They have no political vision for their own country does not produce wealth and do not develop a real economy. But personally enriched by trading resources their countries with multinationals. Obviously, the people are the biggest victim in all this!
When you're a nationalist anti-imperialist cons, you are looking to develop for yourself. You nationalize key sectors of your economy, rather than leaving the management to foreign companies. This will create a national economy in the country and you allow it to grow on the basis of independence. That's what I call a national democratic revolution: national independent because of the imperialist powers, democratic as against feudalism and the elements reactionaries in the country.
However, Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president, was considered a socialist. And during his reign, the state played a very important role in the economy.
Bourguiba's political party was socialist in name only. If the state played an important role, it was only for the benefit of an elite only. This is called state capitalism. In addition, Bourguiba has systematically eliminated all the progressive elements and anti-imperialist in his party. So that this party became the party of one man, completely subject to U.S. imperialism.
Habib Bourguiba , great actor in the struggle for independence, was president of Tunisia from 1957 to 1987
What Was Tunisia important for the United States?
To understand the importance of that country to the U.S. strategy, we must analyze the political context of the Arab world in years 50 and 60. In 1952, officers overthrew the monarchy of King Farouk of Egypt and proclaim a republic. With Nasser at the helm Egypt becomes the basis of Arab nationalism inspired with revolutionary ideas of socialism. As evidenced by the nationalization of the Suez Canal, Nasser's arrival in power is a blow to the West because the Egyptian president's policy is totally at odds with the hegemonic Western powers in the Near and Middle East. Worse still: the anti-imperialist ideas of Nasser are emulated in the region. In Yemen for example, where in 1962 a revolution divided the country, the South becoming a bastion of Arab revolutionary movement. The same year, the independence of Algeria sends a strong signal to Africa and the Third World, the imperialist powers put on alert. Libya also note the Qaddafi coup in 1969. The colonel took power and nationalized major sectors of the economy, to the chagrin of the West. The same year, the Islamic revolution in Iran toppled the Shah, one of the most important pillars of U.S. strategy in the Middle East.
short, at that time, an anti-imperialist movement defies strong strategic interests of the United States in the Arab world. Fortunately for Washington, all countries in the region do not follow the path of Nasser. It the case of Tunisia. In 1957, a year after the independence of Tunisia, Bourguiba was one of the first Arab leaders to send U.S. in the prestigious journal, Foreign Affairs. The title of the article? Nationalism best antidote to communism. For the United States who want to counter the influence of Nasser is a godsend! Bourguiba wrote in his article: "With the regard, Tunisia has chosen to make unequivocal its way into the free world from the West." We are in the Cold War. The Soviets argued that Nasser's influence grows in the region. And the U.S. needs pro-imperialist agents Bourguiba as not to lose strategic control of the Arab world.
Nasser announced the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956
Can we be both nationalist and pro-imperialist?
Bourguiba was a liberal nationalist with anti-communist ideas which led him to join the imperialist camp in the West. In fact, I feel like George Padmore Bourguiba Arabic. Padmore was a leading Pan-Caribbean origin. In 1956 he wrote a book called Pan-Africanism or Communism: The battle ahead in Africa. Like Bourguiba, he fed anti-communist ideas and even if he declared himself a nationalist, his political vision was largely subservient to the interests of imperialist powers. Nationalism served as a cover, their policy is far from being independent. Padmore had a great influence on the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, one of the instigators of the African Union. Its pro-imperialist ideas were able to spread across the continent with the result that we see today is celebrated around the golden jubilee of independence in Africa, but many Africans know they have never become independent. President Nkrumah himself later regretted having taken the advice of Padmore.
In Tunisia too, the submission to imperialist interests has quickly been felt and it turned out that nationalism advocated by Bourguiba was a facade. In the 70s, for example, the President has passed a series of measures intended to attract foreign investors: tax exemption on company profits for ten years, exemption from all duties and taxes for twenty years, exemption from Tax Income property values, etc.. Tunisia has become a vast workshop of Western multinationals in recent repatriation of profits.
Tunisia did she not still been some good progress under Bourguiba?
Yes, there have been positive developments: education, status of women, etc.. First, because Tunisia were the progressives in his elite players, but they were quickly dismissed. Then, because Tunisia was to be dressed in his finest dress. Indeed, this country played a major role in the strategy of the United States to counter the influence of communism in the Arab world. But what had you on the other side? Progressive revolutionary movements that had toppled backward and monarchies who enjoyed popular support. You could not counteract this movement by advocating a feudal system. Saudi Arabia has done so because it could use its oil money for that. But Tunisia, unable to rely on such resources, should provide some progressive image. In the fight against communism, it was supposed to represent a successful Third World countries have chosen the path of liberal nationalism.
But behind the scenes was less flattering. As I said, Bourguiba has systematically eliminated the progressive elements that do not follow his steps. The anti-imperialists who wanted an independent Tunisia both economically and politically, those who wanted to assert their own position in the Third World and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, all were opposed. Tunisia has in fact been used as a laboratory of the imperialist powers. And what was supposed to represent the success of liberal nationalism has become a dictatorship.
When Ben Ali Bourguiba succeeded in 1987, he continues on the same track?
Absolutely. One can even say that the submission to Western interests has grown. Ben Ali was a pure agent of U.S. imperialism. In 1980, as ambassador to Poland, he even served as a liaison between the CIA and Lech Walesa, the union leader who fought against the Soviet Union.
In 1987, when Ben Ali assumed the presidency of Tunisia, the country was deeply in debt by the capitalist crisis of 1973. Moreover, at that time, the ideas of Milton Friedman and his Chicago Boys were very popular. These ultra-liberal economists believed that the market is an entity capable of regulating themselves and that the state should certainly not interfere in the economy. The technical elite Tunisian largely from U.S. schools were highly influenced by theories of Friedman. Ben Ali then left the state capitalism in effect at the beginning of the era Bourguiba. Under the supervision of the IMF and World Bank, he began a privatization program much more massive than what his predecessor had already begun in the 70s.
What were the effects of this new economic policy?
First, privatization of the Tunisian economy has allowed Ben Ali and his wife's family, Trabelsi, personal enrichment. Corruption has reached a very high level, Tunisia has become a country totally subservient to imperialism, headed by a comprador bourgeoisie. Obviously, Ben Ali and his clan did not have many raw materials to selling out to Western multinationals. But they took advantage of the education system established under Bourguiba to develop a service economy. Indeed, the Tunisian workforce is highly educated and inexpensive at a time. It therefore attracts foreign investors.
Tourism has also developed strong as to become the mainstay of the Tunisian economy. Here we see the lack of political vision of the elite. Indeed, no country can develop its economy based on tourism if not first developed a national economic base. The tourism industry consumes a lot but reported very little to the Tunisian people. Imagine: while Western tourists consume hectoliters of water to bask in pools, Jacuzzis or golf course, the poor peasants in the south face of the drying soil.
But it's not just the farmers who have suffered from this policy. Overall, the social conditions of the Tunisian people deteriorated while the president's entourage has amassed a huge fortune. Everyone knew the regime was corrupt. So to maintain this system, the system should prevent any disputes. The repression became even more brutal penny Ben Ali simple criticism or even the desire for modernity and openness were not allowed. Such a situation could lead to popular revolt. Moreover, trying to monopolize his clan the wealth of the country, Ben Ali has also drew the ire of some of the traditional bourgeois Tunisia.
You say that political repression was very strong. Is there anyway today, opposition forces can guide the people's revolution now that Ben Ali has fallen?
Genuine opposition parties were banned under Ben Ali. However, some continued to exist underground. For example, the first Tunisian Communist Party could not live openly and organize like any political party in a democracy. But he continued to operate secretly through associations of civil society (teachers, farmers, doctors, prisoners ...). The PGWPP was able to form a social base and fired a solid experience of this period. It is exceptional in the Arab world.
I think two major challenges now await the opposition parties. First, they must come forward and make themselves known to the general public in Tunisia. Then they must organize a united front of resistance to imperialism. In fact, the imperialist powers seek to maintain the system without Ben Ali Ben Ali. We see now with the Union government National rejected the Tunisians, which is very positive. But the imperialist powers will not stop there. They will certainly seek to impose an International Electoral Commission to support candidates who defend to their best interests. It is therefore necessary to resist interference by creating a united front to build a true democracy.
Opposition parties are they able to overcome their differences to create such a front?
I know that some political parties were reluctant to associate Islamo-nationalist movement Ennahda. This movement emerged in the 80s. He advocated an anti-imperialist line and in fact, has suffered political repression. Why not combine Ennahda in front of resistance to the interference of foreign powers? Tunisia is a Muslim country. It is normal that a political force emerges with an Islamo-nationalist trend. You can not prevent that.
But each of these movements must be studied separately, with its own specificities. This was done by the communist PGWPP. They studied scientifically objective conditions that apply Tunisia. Their conclusion is that the Communists and Islamo-nationalists have been victims of political repression and that even though their programs differ, they share common ground: they want an end to dictatorship and the independence of Tunisia. The Communists have proposed an alliance with the Islamo-nationalists long ago. Of course, the PGWPP does not make Tunisia a Islamic state. Its political agenda is different from that of al-Nahda. But it is the Tunisian people who will judge these differences democratically. Elections should be a contest open to everyone. That is true democracy.
Precisely opposition parties gathered in front of 14 January to fight against the interim government of Mohamed Ghannouchi, a henchman of former President Ben Ali. A hopeful sign?
Absolutely, Tunisia is on the right track: all opposition parties banned so far have created a united front to prevent the system is maintained without Ben Ali Ben Ali. Also underline the role played by the base of the union UGTT. The head of the union authorized under Ben Ali was corrupt and working with the state police. But since the basis of the union put pressure on its leaders and members who UGTT were part of the transitional government have resigned. Although much remains to be done, democracy wins Tunisian institutions under pressure from the people.
Western powers opposed to that. They want to impose democracy in Tunisia where only low-intensity "good" candidates would be allowed to stand for election. If you look at the type of democracy that the United States enjoy, you come across Ethiopia. The U.S. government has provided $ 983 million to countries in the Horn of Africa for the year 2010. That same year, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, in office since 16 years, was reelected with 99.5 percent of the vote! It's even better than Ben Ali! The reality is this: behind their rhetoric in support of the Tunisian people, the Western powers continue to actively support many other Ben Ali in the world.
The United States could not they support other candidates pro-imperialist, but in the eyes of Tunisians, were not associated with the Ben Ali era?
It would be difficult. There is a part of the comprador bourgeoisie which was lésinée by the corrupt system of Ben Ali. But this elite is not strong enough control the popular movement and not enough grounding in the Establishment to win.
The United States had also thought of another strategy: a few months ago, while Ben Ali was still in power, the U.S. ambassador has visited a Communist leader in prison. Officially, a simple observation visit in the framework of respect for human rights. Unofficially, the U.S. anticipated the departure of Ben Ali and wanted to test the waters. Their goal was to get the Communists against the Islamo-nationalists, divide the resistance to imperialism to weaken more. But the Communists Tunisia does not fall into the trap. They are very familiar with the strategy developed by Henry Kissinger in the 80s in the Middle East. They published a very good study on the subject and know they should not take orders from outside or adhere to ideologies manufactured by foreign powers.
Why the U.S. have they abandoned Ben Ali? Had he gone too far in personal enrichment? According to a cable Wikileaks, the U.S. ambassador was very critical of the system of quasi-mafioso Tunisian president, organized corruption are obstacles to investments by foreign companies.
This is not the problem. The United States does not care about corruption. Instead, it is a key element of the system of domination on the U.S. South. In fact, Washington was aware of the internal situation in Tunisia and knew that Ben Ali would not be able to govern. The West must now ensure that the replacement of Ben Ali will continue to defend their interests. The stakes are high. The capitalist crisis is causing serious problems in the West. Besides this, China is getting stronger and now provides more loans than the World Bank and other imperialist powers combined. She even wants to buy a significant portion of the debt of the euro area partly because it has economic interests with European countries, on the other imperialist powers to divide, the EU is historically associated with states USA.
In such a context, the Tunisian people's movement, under the auspices of a revolutionary leadership, could establish an independent government and take advantage of this situation of a multipolar world. The imperialist powers fear that countries that were traditionally under his rule become economically independent, turning also to China. Tunisia could build relationships with the Asian giant to develop its commercial ports. And it would seriously question the concept of the Mediterranean Dialogue, this expansion of NATO to the countries of the Mediterranean that is not a dialogue but a mere instrument of Western domination.
Another country that seems to fear democracy in Tunisia and in the region, Israel. Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said shortly after the fall of Ben Ali that the development of democracy in Arab countries threaten Israel's security. This country often called only democracy in the Middle East, would he be afraid of competition?
Under a democratic facade, Israel is a fascist, apartheid state. In the region, it can not ally with repressive dictatorial states, led by comprador bourgeoisie that weaken the body of the Arab nation. Currently, these Arab states are rich countries inhabited by poor people. But if a democratic government in the full sense of the term emerges, it will increase economically the Arab nation as a whole. And this economic development will lead to an alliance of Arab countries against the state racist oppressing the Palestinians. Israel fears this course.
Moreover, there is a very big gap between the official positions of Arab dictatorships and the popular sentiment about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Since Egyptian President Sadat visited Israel in 1977, Egypt's position is "we want peace." But it is a position imposed by force to the population. And the current Egyptian government is not content to maintain peaceful relations with Tel Aviv. It participates actively in the strangulation of Gaza, while the majority of Egyptians in solidarity with Palestinians.
It's the same alignment of Arab dictatorships on Washington politics. Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt are allies of the United States while the populations of these countries are anti-imperialists. I was in Egypt when Muntadhar al-Zaidi, a journalist in Iraq, threw his shoes on George W. Bush. The Egyptian population was celebrated as a hero. I heard of fathers wanting to marry their daughter with the reporter. Still, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is one of the most faithful allies of Washington.
Do you think the revolution Tunisia a domino effect could cause the downfall of other dictatorships in the Arab world?
70% of the population in Arab countries is less than thirty years and knows that unemployment, police repression and corruption. But all these young people want to live. And to live, they need change. This is the reality of each country. It is therefore not even need a domino effect, the objective conditions are ripe for further revolutions erupt.
People no longer want to live as before. But for their part, the ruling classes are they unable to govern as before?
course. And we see in Egypt today. There are police everywhere in this country. But it is impossible to control everything. A state police has its limitations and the Arab world have reached.
Furthermore, information plays a very important role today. Tunisians, Egyptians and peoples of the Third World are better informed through Al-Jazeera as part of an Internet and social networks on the other. The evolution of information technology has increased the level of education and consciousness of people. The people no longer a mass of illiterate peasants. You have a lot of very smart young people, with a certain practical sense, able to circumvent censorship and of mobilizing the Internet.
there in these countries the opposition forces can guide the popular revolutions?
Why Punishment is so important if these dictators were not in danger? Why the comprador bourgeoisie, so greedy, she would spend so much money in the repressive apparatus if she was not afraid to be reversed? If there was no opposition, all this would not be necessary.
the side of Western observers, many fear that the collapse of these regimes Arab favors the rise of Islamism. As summarized so finely Christophe Barbier, editor of L'Express, "Ben Ali is better than the bearded." These fears proved on of Islamism are they based?
Islamism became the condom of imperialism. Western powers justify their strategy of domination in the Arab-Muslim world under the guise of fighting against Islam. There are Islamists everywhere today. Soon, we shall find even traces of Al-Qaeda on Mars if it is useful to the imperialists!
In reality, the West has always needed to invent an enemy to justify its hegemonic designs and incredible military spending (financed by taxpayers). After the fall of the Soviet Union and the demise of the communist enemy is Islam and Al Qaeda who have played the roles of villains villains.
But the West has no problem with Islamism. It adapts very well to this trend in countries like Saudi Arabia. Moreover, he himself fostered the rise of Islamist movements to counter the Arab nationalism at a time. The real problem for the West is anti-imperialism. That's why he tries to discredit any popular movement in the Arab world who is opposed to its interests by affixing the label "Islamist."
Finally, it should not be very smart to think that the Arab dictatorships are bulwarks against the rise of religious fanaticism. Instead, these repressive regimes have led some of the population to be radicalized. Who could afford to say that such and such people have no right to democracy? In a truly democratic country, different political forces may emerge. But the bourgeoisie comprador ruling in the Arab dictatorships can not convince people. She can not even face to face. To defend the imperialist interests, you must prevent other political forces to emerge because they are likely to convince the people against a corrupt elite. The West has always sought to maintain dictatorships that served its interests by waving the specter of Islamism. But the Arab peoples need democracy. They claim it today and nobody can not go against these claims.

New Trailer For The Elder Scrolls Online, Imperial Edition Confirmed
A new trailer for Zenimax Online Studios’ upcoming Elder Scrolls MMO, comes alongside confirmation of yesterday’s reports of an Imperial Edition. Now we have the specific details of what’s included.
The premium package for Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Online comes with a 12 inch statue of Daedric prince Molag Bal, a key antagonist in the game, a map of Tamriel, unique packaging, and a number of digital elements. With the Imperial Edition, you’ll gain access to a white horse, a mudcrab pet, and the Rings of Mara in-game item that awards an experience bonus.
The Imperial Edition is also the only way to play as the Imperial race. Additionally, all pre-orders will have access to the Explorer’s Pack. This ensures that any characters you create can join any alliance regardless of race, a Scutter pet, and four digital treasure maps.
The video below is a cinematic fight around a "dark anchor" point. We saw one of these events unfold in-game in a recent video. The Imperial Edition is priced at $99.99. A digital version (without the statue and map) is available directly from Bethesda and some retailers for $79.99. Those that purchase either the digital standard or Imperial edition from Bethesda and select other retailers will get access five days before the rest of the public.

The Elder Scrolls Online will be available for PC and Mac on April 4, 2014. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are coming in June.

Three Zenimax Online Studios leads on the ambitious The Elder Scrolls Online have come together to demonstrate why teaming up in Tamriel is a good idea. The video features creative director Paul Sage, lead gameplay designer Nick Konkle, and dungeon lead Dan Crenshaw.
The video begins with two of the party members, a mage and healer, taking on an enemy. Following that, we get a look at the fast travel options that enable parties to more easily find one another. Wayshrines allow players to teleport directly to others in the group.
The main attraction is a “dark anchor” encounter, during which Daedric prince Molag Bal attempts to pull the mortal plane into his own world. Cultists, sacrifices, and waves of enemies are on display as the trio dislodges the anchor from Tamriel.

A couple of things we noticed is how fluidly combat moves, regardless of which point of view is in play. Additionally, the hallmarks of Elder Scrolls gameplay, especially stealth and the flexibility of character builds have been translated into the MMO.
The Elder Scrolls Online launches first on PC and Mac on April 4. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 releases will come later. For more on The Elder Scrolls Online, you can check out our coverage from the June 2012 issue and read a journal of our time with the game at Gamescom 2013.

You Can Become A Werewolf In The Elder Scrolls Online
With Halloween approaching, the team at Zenimax Online has revealed new information about one of Tamriel’s most terrifying creatures. Werewolves will be present in The Elder Scrolls Online, and players will even risk contracting Sanies Lupines, the disease which causes the affliction.
The team has shared some concept art (above) and a screenshot of what the beasts will look like in-game. We also have learned that those afflicted will have a full transformation animation, drawing inspiration from film scenes, but with a healthy dose of Elder Scrolls flavor.
The information also teases that there might be PvP elements that come into play as players reveal themselves to be werewolves. “We want you to be able to launch yourself into a frenzied killing spree and feel the uncontrollable strength granted to you by the transformation,” the team writes. “As you can imagine, witnessing a werewolf reveal its true form is disturbing, and it’s certainly an event that will strike fear into those who happen to observe it.”
Werewolves will have their own skill line, so players can expect to get a full experience as a lycanthrope should they be turned. The team went so far as to reference video of animals feasting on prey and used a mixture of human and beastial noises to give the werewolf its own audio profile.
The Elder Scrolls Online is slated for a 2014 release on PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. You can read an extensive preview from Gamescom to learn more about how the team at Zenimax Online is adapting the series to an MMO format.

A Two Hour Journal Of Bethesda's MMORPG
The MMORPG genre and The Elder Scrolls series are known for being engrossing time sinks. Players pour hours into these worlds and still feel like they hardly scratched the surface. Bethesda is combining both game types with The Elder Scrolls Online, potentially creating an even bigger threat to fantasy fans’ calendars (and wallets). I played two hours of Zenimax Online Studio's ambitious title at a Gamescom 2013 preview event in Cologne, Germany. The time I spent exploring Bleakrock Village and clearing bandits from a mine flew by, so I kept a detailed journal to archive my experience.
Bethesda representatives sit us down at our computer stations, explain the basics of character customization and skill distribution, then set us loose.
I begin by selecting a male Dark Elf and am dropped into Bleakrock Village, an island off the coast of Skyrim. I’m a Templar, which is a precursor to the Dawnguard featured in The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim’s post-launch DLC. A Bethesda employee helps me with the skill point distribution system. I drop a point into my combat skills, acquiring Puncturing Strikes, which allows me to attack several enemies in front of me at once. Attacks like these can be leveled up, independent of your character level, allowing players more progression without the regular old grind. I start off with a quest to commander Rana.
I encounter a woman preaching at a statue about Rana. She claims Rana is risking people’s lives. I continue to explore the snowy Nord village and talk to a Denskar Earth-Turner, a dairy farmer that tells me he moved to this village to start a new life.
I find commander Rana, who needs my help warning the townsfolk. She believes an invasion ship is on the way. She tells me I need to find important Bleakrock citizens at a dragon shrine, a haunted hollow, and an abandoned mine. I decide to start off by killing the bandits inhabiting the mine and send Rana’s compatriot Seyne back to town.
I find a journal in your quarters which reveals Rana’s partner Seyne is also a Dark Elf, and that the commander has been exiled to command a garrison or Nords on Bleakrock. The journal mentions a mysterious body that showed up on the beach, which was curiously dry. A Bethesda employee watches me curiously as I type and read this journal entry simultaneously. I believe they think I’m feverishly copying down the content of the in-game journal.
I test out the first-person swordplay on some unsuspecting deer wandering through the woods. I feel like a monster. The action feels familiar to Skyrim, which helps me settle into the experience more quickly. I find sergeant Seyne outside the mine. She killed one of the bandits and asks me to wear its clothes and sneak into the mine and see what they’re doing down there.
I attempt to sneak into the bandit encampment and blow it. I’m discovered pretty quickly and begin battling. The first guard I kill drops a letter. These bandits have been charged to wrangle up villagers and sell them for supplies. I accept a secondary quest to burn the bandits’ supplies, but the quest marker is far off. I attempt stealth again, but a patrolling sentry spots me. I get ambushed, die, revive on my corpse, and try again. I kill the first sentry I see, take its uniform, and try to be more careful. I’m almost discovered again when the sentry immediately respawns on my location.
I make it to the mine, but the person on the other side of the massive door won’t let me in. I explore the surrounding area for clues. I fight some more bandits, settling into a steady attack, block, attack rhythm familiar to Elder Scroll’s basic combat. I find a contract in a nearby house that reveals the bandits took over the town in order to retrieve magical artifacts from the mine, Hozzin’s Folly. The note warns of traps in the mine, as it used to host old Nord rituals.
I find more clues, including a relic and an old journal. The relic is shattered and has lost its magical potency. The journal reveals that the Nords were performing rituals in the mines to appease their god, but otherwordly creatures called scamps are causing trouble. I knock on the door to the mine, tell the guard I’m there to help take care of the trouble, and I’m let in. The fool immediately flees upon recognizing me as a stranger and is immolated by an old booby trap.
I batter enough bandits to level up. I spend the skill point on the Puncture ability, which allows me to damage my enemies’ armor for a short duration. I blow my cover again and am swarmed by disgruntled miners toiling away. Puncture changes up the way I play quite a bit. I now open up combat by using the armor-weakening move on my foes, then peppering them with regular sword swipes for increased damage.
I find my way into the tomb, and I’m prompted to avoid a series of fire traps. The scamps blast me with fire spells as I slowly work my way into the tomb. A swirling, glowing mass of purple and yellow light is in the middle of an improvised ritual chamber. This is a portal to the hellish world of Oblivion, and I have the option to enter. Stepping within I’m prompted to destroy the Unspeakable Sigil. I stare down the mouth of a twisted, red cavern with intimidating red banners hanging from above.
I fight several more scamps. The little fiery goblins like to cast area-of-effect fire spells, but the casting time and telltale ruins give me a moment to step out of the way. I kill the remaining scamps and approach a floating sphere basking in bright light. I click the Unspeakable Sigil and my character is knocked back, sent through a portal, and suddenly outside the mine. A message informs me that I’ve destroyed the strange item. Seargeant Seyne meets me outside. I tell her what happens and she tells me a group called the Covenant is behind it all. She rewards me with a new sword and suggests we head back to speak with Captain Rana.
I return to Bleakrock via a toll-based shrine teleportation system. This luxury cuts my travel time in half, which allows me to warn Rana more quickly to evacuate citizens. Seyne is already there, fervently reading a book near her commander. Rana asks me to start rounding up people to get out safely. Being the upstanding denizen of Tamriel I am, I set out to find the 15 people I need to help evacuate.
I run into a wounded warrior named Hoknir. A beast named Deathclaw has eaten off his foot (though his character model still clearly has the appendage). He wants me to end the beast in his stead. Hoknir lost a slew of gear as he limped away from Deathclaw’s base. He suggests I follow the trail of equipment like breadcrumbs to the fiend’s lair.
I find Hoknir’s arrows and sword on the wait to Deathclaw’s lair. I take out a couple of wolves chewing on a deer carcass. I loot the dead doe’s carcass and use the meat to lure Deathclaw outside. An unremarkable battle ensues that I easily win. I begin questioning Hoknir’s claim to be a lifelong hunter of dangerous beasts. Nevertheless, I take Deathclaw’s talon and head back. Hoknir miraculously rises to his feet and asks me how my hunt went. I exchange the memento for Hoknir’s axe, he limps a few steps towards the road, the dissolves into nothing. My quest tracker indicates I’ve rescued one of the missing townsfolk of Bleakstone. I decide to head back to Bleakstone to see if we can advance the quest without rescuing any more schleps like Hoknir.
Rana gives me a chance to change my mind about abandoning the missing people. I’m still rewarded for rescuing the people that I did. I gladly equip the new pair of pants. The Covenant has arrived, and Rana charges me with cutting a swath through them and lighting a warning beacon to warn the mainland about them. In the meantime, Rana goes to rally the villagers.
I fight a handful of Covenant troops on my way to the tower. One enemy rogue uses an ability to leap over my head and land behind me, forcing me to turn quickly and block his follow up attack. I encounter an archer with a red, glowing charge shot which can perceptive players can sidestep. I like the simple cues the game displays to telegraph enemy attacks. I climb the tower, light the warning beacon, and am prompted to go talk to Tillrani Snow-Bourne.
A trail of dead villagers leads all the way back to Bleakstone Village. Snow-Bourne is mortally wounded. Between bloody coughs she mentions that the townsfolk must be saved from the spreading fire. She points me towards a well and water buckets, so I get to work. I click on the buckets near the well and make for the closest flaming building. An incendiary mage is blocking barring my route, but the blade Seyne gave me makes short work of him. I use the water bucket on the flaming door and enter. Within I find the dairy farmer cowering in building and lead him out. I set out to put out more fires when I’m informed my two hours is up.
Time in Tamriel flies by whether you’re playing a single-player Elder Scrolls game or checking out Bethesda’s new MMO. I haven’t played World of Warcraft for years, and Star Wars: The Old Republic couldn’t hold my attention, but I’m excited to play more of The Elder Scrolls Online. The interesting questlines and familiar combat have kept me engaged so far, and doing it all with friends should make the experience even more exciting. The Elder Scrolls Online hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC early next year.
Meet The Elder Scrolls Online's Daedra Scamps
The Elder Scrolls Online's smallest Daedra, the scamps, are the dangerous comic relief of Tamriel.
They're small enemies that appeared in Morrowind and Oblivion. They shoot fire, have melodramatic death animations, and have they're own ridiculous gibberish language.

An extended session of hands-on time with the hotly anticipated MMO brought us to the familiar city from Elder Scrolls II, and we got a taste of combat and questing.
Hot on the heels of the announced console versions of Elder Scrolls Online, we've had a chance to once again sit down with an early build of the game here at E3. A few weeks back, Tim Turi explored one approach to the large demo space, so I took a different route this time around, and spent some extra time exploring the character creator, abilities, and a separate quest line.
First, I dug into the detailed options for the character creator. In addition to choosing a race, face and body morphing options help to assure that each character should look distinct within the game world; these options are significantly more detailed than many MMOs. I opted for the Dragon Knight class, which appears to be a multi-purpose fighter class with a wide variety of ability options.
The demo popped me a little past the starter area of the game, right into the heart of Daggerfall, though the game's setting several thousand years before the other Elder Scrolls games means that the city looks decidedly different than it does in later years (in Elder Scrols II: Daggerfall). My character begins at level six, so I immediately hop in and explore the game's level-up and ability screen. Here, I'm greeted by abilities spread across three distinct trees. For my dragon knight, I can select abilities in the Ardent Flame, Draconic Power, and Earthen Heart groups -- each of which has multiple abilities that can be leveled up. Powers map to a small action bar at the bottom of the screen, keeping your options limited to a small number of five or six special moves in each battle, in addition to a standard left-mouse click melee swing. As I move through the city and begin a series of quests, enemy combatants regularly arrive, and help show off the fast-moving combat. Battles are highly focused on movement, blocking, positioning, and smart power use; the whole affair feels more action-oriented than most MMOs.
During my hour of playtime, I make my way through a number of small sidequests, as well as an extensive mission chain that sees my character thwarting an assassination attempt on the local king. Questing feels more directed and story-driven than many MMOs, and less focused on "kill this many foes" or "collect this many objects." Even so, in the balance between traditional MMOs and the familiar Elder Scrolls games, the game undeniably feels closer to an MMO than its single-player RPG forebears.
As my demo ends, the king has been saved, and I head out of Daggerfall to help save a nearby hamlet from attack. The Elder Scrolls Online is an undeniably pretty MMO, with great looking characters, monsters, and environments, and the established world of Tamriel should be an exciting place to explore. After finally getting some hands-on time with the game, I'm most enthusiastic about the combat mechanics, and the way they combine strategic use of powers with a decidedly action game feel. Like any MMO, even an extended demo only scratches the surface of The Elder Scrolls Online's feature set. Nonetheless, I came away excited about what I played, and eager to see how Zenimax Online continues to build out the ancient history of one of my favorite fantasy worlds.

Mustalikoğulları Savaşı'ndan Ders Alalım
Hicretin altıncı senesi Şaban ayında (Ocak-628) yapılan Mustalik oğulları (Müreysi) savaşına münâfıklarda Müslümanların safında katılmışlardı. Bu savaş Müslümanların zaferiyle sonuçlandı. Savaştan sonra Hz. Peygamber efendimiz ve İslâm ordusu Müreysi kuyusunun yanında konaklarken, Hz. Ömer'in ücretli işçisi olarak çalışan Cehcah b.
Ubeyy ile birlikte kuyu başındaki kavgayı seyreden Ensar'a mensup bazı Müslümanlar "Koşun, adamınıza yardım edin!" diyen Abdullah b. Ubeyy'in teşvikiyle Sinan'ın yardımına koştular.
Her şeyi ellerinizle onlara peşkeş çektiniz.
Ubeyy'in yakınında oturan Zeyd b. Erkam duydukları karşısında şaşırmış bir haldeydi. Kendisi çocuk denebilecek yaşta olmasına rağmen, İslâm'ı anlamış ve kavramış birisiydi. Abdullah b. Ubeyy'in sözlerini duyunca kulaklarına inanamadı. Hemen amcası Hz. Ömer'e gitti ve işittiklerini anlattı.
Hz. Ömer, Zeyd b. Erkam'ı yanına alarak Rasûlullah'a götürdü. İşittiklerini Rasûlullah'a anlatmasını istedi. O sırada Rasûlullah bazı müslümanlarla oturmuş kuyu başında yaşanan olayı konuşuyordu. Zeyd, duyduklarını anlattı. Zeyd'in anlattıkları, kuyu başında yaşanan olay kadar önemliydi. Rasûlullah kendisine söylenenlerin doğruluğundan emin olmak istedi. Zeyd'in, henüz çocuk denebilecek yaşta olması nedeniyle, yanlış anlamış olabileceğini veya Abdullah b. Ubeyy'e düşmanlık için yalan söyleyebileceğini düşündü. Bu nedenle Zeyd'e birçok kez söylediklerinden emin olup olmadığını, doğru söyleyip söylemediğini sordu. Zeyd, yalan söylemediğini, duyduklarından emin olduğunu, söylediklerinin aynen ifade ettiği gibi olduğunu yeminler ederek tekrar anlattı. Zeyd'in söyledikleri karşısında Rasûlullah üzüldü ve öfkelendi. Abdullah b. Ubeyy ile görüşmeye karar verip onu yanına çağırttı.
Durumun açığa çıktığını anlayan Abdullah b. Ubeyy, bazı yandaşlarını da yanına alarak, Rasûlullah'ın yanına gelip oturdu. Rasûlullah, duyduklarının doğru olup olmadığını sordu. Eğer böyle bir şey söylediyse hatasından dönmesini, tevbe etmesini istedi. Abdullah söylenen şeylerin tamamının yalan olduğunu, kesinlikle böyle şeyler söylemediğini ve söylemeyeceğini, kendisi gibi bir Müslümana böyle şeylerin yakışmayacağını ifade etti. Yandaşlarını da söylediklerinin doğruluğuna şahit tuttu. Rasûlullah, Abdullah b. Ubeyy'in kendisine şahit göstererek söylediklerini kabul etmek zorunda kaldı. Zeyd'e ise bir şey demedi.
Abdullah b. Ubeyy'in, yalancı şâhitlerinin de desteğiyle söylediklerini inkâr etmesi yüzünden Zeyd, yalancı duruma düşmüştü.
Her gürültüyü kendi aleyhlerine sanırlar.
Ubeyy'in konuşmaları orduya yayılmıştı. Herkes o sözleri bir şekilde konuşmaya başlamıştı. Bazıları oldukça sert tepkiyle Abdullah b. Ubeyy'in konuşmasına karşı çıkıp bunların yanlış olduğunu söylerken; diğer bazıları ise belirgin bir tepki vermemişti. Ordunun gündemini Abdullah b. Ubeyy'in sözleri oluşturuyordu.
Hz. Ömer öfkesinden yerinde duramıyordu. Israrla, "Ey Allah'ın Rasûlü! Yeter bu kadar sabır! İzin ver şu münafığı öldüreyim!" deyip duruyordu. Rasûlullah bu teklifi kabul etmedi. Ömer, Abdullah b. Ubeyy'i öldürmesi durumunda, Muhâcirlerle Ensar arasında yeni bir çatışma çıkacağı düşüncesiyle teklifinin reddedildiğini düşündü. Çünkü kendisi bir muhâcirdi. Bu nedenle "Bana izin vermiyorsan, emret ensardanSa'd b. Muaz, Muhammed b. Ubeyy'in öldürülmesini doğru bulmuyordu.
Ubeyy'in gündemi belirlemesini, Müslümanların onun sözleri üzerine yorumlar yapmasını önlemiş oldu. Artık hiç kimse Abdullah b. Ubeyy'i konuşacak, değerlendirecek hâlde değildi. Gündemi Abdullah b. Ubeyy veya sözleri oluşturmuyordu.
Abdullah b. Ubeyy'in münâfıklığına, münâfıkların liderliğini yapmasına rağmen, oğlu Abdullah son derece samîmî bir Müslümandı.
Ubeyy'in ağzıyla bir hakikat ifade edilmiş oldu.
Ordunun önünde bunlar olurken, Rasûlullah ordunun gerilerindeydi. Kalabalığı farketti ve niçin toplanıldığını sordu. Olanlar kendisine anlatıldı. Duydukları Rasûlullah'ı memnun etti. Müslümanlar arasındaki câhiliye fitnesinin münâfık baba ile Müslüman oğlu arasındaki bu olay ile kaybolup, asıl olması gereken iman bağının öne çıkmasına son derece sevindi. Abdullah'a yaklaşarak babasını serbest bırakmasını istedi.
Muhammed’in Hayatı ve İslâm Daveti, II, 253-258)
Ecdâdımız “Su uyur düşman uyumaz.” demişler. Ne kadar da doğru söylemişler! Düşman, bizi tuzağa düşürmek için her türlü fırsatı kollar. Lütfen, onlara fırsat vermeyelim! Her zaman uyanık olalım!
İslami Yapılanmada İlk İşler
Hz.
Her muhacir kendisini kardeş edinen Medinelinin evinde kalacak, onunla birlikte çalışacak, geliri paylaşacaktı. Bu anlaşma bir yıl yürürlükte kaldı. Zira muhacirler kısa zamanda kendi geçimlerini sağlamayı başardı.
Öte yandan Medine Yahudilerini de içine alan Medine Şehir Devleti, yazılı bir anayasa gereğince yeniden teşkil edildi. Buna göre Müslümanlarla Yahudiler müttefikti. Harpte birbirlerine yardım edeceklerdi. Anlaşmazlıklar Allah'a ve Muhammed aleyhisselama götürülecek, Hz. Peygamber'in hükmüne göre halledilecekti.
Bu anlaşma Müslümanların Medine Şehir Devletine hâkimiyet belgesiydi. Dışarıdan gelecek bir saldırıya karşı Medine’yi bütünleştirmekteydi.
Peygamber Efendimizin müşriklere karşı ehl-i kitap olan Yahudilerle saldırmazlık anlaşması imzalaması ümmetine örnekti. Kaleler teker teker fethedilecekti. Eldeki güç, daima, en tehlikeli noktaya yöneltilecekti. İçe dönük mücadeleye asla izin verilmeyecekti. Birlik ve beraberlik en güçlü silah bilinecekti.
Peygamber sallallahu aleyhi ve sellem bu ilk günlerde ehl-i kitaba dine dair soru sormayı nehy etti.
Onu Hz. Peygamber geciktirmeden şöylece belirledi:
Bu sebeple Medine’ye “harem-i Rasûl” dendi.
Medine bundan böyle daima gündemdeydi.
Medine’nin iklimi Mekke’nin havasından epeyce değişikti. Yakındaki bataklık sıtma sebebiydi. Muhacirlere bu hava ağır geldi. Onlar durumu Hz. Peygambere şikâyet etti. O, mübarek ellerini kaldırdı;
Hz. Peygamber’in duası makbuldü.
Bunu gidermek için Mescid-i Nebevî’nin inşaatı başlatıldı.
Âyet-i kerîme bildirdi:
Mescidlere mü'minler devam ederdi. Hz. Peygamber emir verdi:
Peygamber'in eşlerine ait odalar/hucurât...
Mescid-i Nebevî’nin inşası bitmişti. Namazlar cemaatle edâ edilmekteydi. Ancak namaza davet, namaz vaktinin ilanı önem arz etmekteydi.
Bu iş için istişare meclisleri düzenlenmekteydi. Arayış derindi.
Bir gün Ezan’ın sözlerini rüyasında öğrenen Abdullah b. Zeyd radıyallahu anh heyecanla çıkageldi. Hz. Peygamber’e rüyasını haber verdi. Aman ne güzeldi. Davet şekli belirlenmişti. Herkes sevindi. Ancak her işi ehline vermek gerekti. Bu işin adamı Bilal-i Habeşî idi. Hz. Peygamber emretti Abdullah b.
Halbuki “Allah'a çağırandan daha güzel sesli kim olabilirdi?”
Hicretin ilk yıllarında görülen en önemli gelişmelerden biri de Kıblenin Kudüs’ten Kâbe’ye çevrilmesiydi. Kıblenin değiştirilmesini emreden âyet-i kerîme gelir gelmez Hz.
Âyet-i kerîme bildirdi:
Peygamber’e (a.s.) karşı olan tutumları bakımından dört gruba ayrıldılar:
1- Mekkeli Kureyş müşrikleri, Müslümanlarla silahlı mücadeleyi tercih etti.
2- Bazı Arap kabileleri, Hz. Peygamber’i (a.s.) düşmanlarıyla baş başa bırakıp neticeyi beklemeyi, başka bir deyişle “bekle gör” siyasetini seçti.
Peygamber’le (a.s.) antlaşarak karşılıklı saldırmazlık ilkesini ve O’nun (a.s.) düşmanlarına yardım etmemeyi kabul ettiler.
4- Hz. Peygamber’in (a.s.) Medine’ye yerleşip muhâcir ve ensârdan müteşekkil Müslüman toplumu siyasî bir teşkilata kavuşturarak, devlet başkanlığı pozisyonunu fiilen kazanmasından itibaren; zahirde Müslümanlarla birlikte görünen içten ise onlara düşmanlık yapan ve fırsat buldukça Medine İslâm toplumuna karşı yıkıcı faaliyetlerde bulunan yani münâfıklık yapan yeni bir grup oluştu.
Übey b. Ka’b el-Ensârî el-Hazrecî en-Neccârî’nin (r.a.) bildirdiğine göre, ensâr Rasûlullah (a.s.) ve ashabına kucak açtı.
“Ehl-i Kitap’tan çoğu, hakikat kendilerine apaçık belli olduktan sonra, sırf içlerindeki kıskançlıktan ötürü, sizi imanınızdan vazgeçirip küfre döndürmek istediler. Ancak Rasûlullah (a.s.), doğrudan İslâm toplumuna yönelik müşahhas tehdit içeren girişimlere karşı fiilî-cezâî müdahalelerde bulundu.

Hz. Peygamber (a.s.), kâri’lerin efendisi (سيد القراء) Übey b. Yüce Allah, Übey’in (r.a.) ismini zikrederek Hz. Peygamber’den (a.s.) Beyyine Sûresi’ni ona (r.a.) okumasını emretmiştir. Hz. Ömer (r.a.), Übey’i (r.a.) “Müslümanların efendisi” diye nitelemiştir.
en-Nur 24/55. Ömer (r.a.), muhâcirlerden bir zata devlet hazinesinden (beytülmal) payına düşeni verirken şöyle demiştir: “Al! Allah bereketini arttırsın. Bu, Allah’ın sana dünyada iken vaat ettiği rızıktır. Senin için âhirete sakladığı ise daha değerlidir.” Bkz. Şâmî, IV,3-4.

Apple tree disease identification help
Two of our 4 year apple trees have developed worrying signs of disease.
Kidds orange - this tree had a branch which looked cankerous last year, and this was removed. The tree split this summer with the weight of apples and now an area of the bark just above the split seems blistered and discoloured.
The other tree is Epicure, and has developed a series of vertical splits in the bark near the ground.
Both trees look otherwise healthy and bore a lot of apples this year.
Any help appreciated
We have 3 pear trees planted 2010 as 3 yr old trees. This year all three have black spots and lesions concentrated along the central rib of the leaves. Virtually all the leaves are affected. The worst affected tree also has black areas on the new growth shoots, which look like they are all dying. There are small cracked and peeling areas on the bark of all the trees, nothing oozing from them. We have searched the RHS book on Pests and Diseases but are at a loss to identify.
With this collaboration comes an app called Mitsumeru Ghibli-ten, where users can view an exhibit of the movie's art director Yohei Taneda's works, as well as the buildings and structures that have appeared in past Ghibli films, on one's smartphone.
Suzuki comments: "You see it flat on the silver screen but these scenes come to life in 3D on your smart phones. We work in a predominantly 2D environment, but we are also impressed and fascinated by 3D. And being able to do something like this is pretty fun. Even Mr. Walt Disney's last work and efforts was poured into Disney Land.".
Mr. Suzuki also gave updates on director Hayao Miyazaki (73), who announced his retirement from doing feature films in September last year. "He already announced his retirement, but he still comes to work every day. I hope he goes away soon. (laughs)". Maybe he's has nothing else to do, but he apparently comes to work and passionately trains the younger generation. "He said that he won't intrude nor help the young ones, but he immediately gives out instructions and shows them how its done".
Suzuki also praised director Yonebayashi and producer Yoshiaki Nishimura.
"When you compare them to the two great masters (Miyazaki and fellow director Isao Takahata), they were able to finish the production in half the time. And despite the time constraints, I am impressed by the quality of the art and animation that they have produced.".
They'll officially be able to launch their character goods- related business plan once Miyazaki goes away.
Like Nausicaa figurines, sequel of Laputa, Totoro pachinko, and even Ghibli Land.
He'll make a comeback, 100%.
Draw comics, please
He probably can't stay still w
Hey gramps, give it a rest already
Payao, you don't have to make anime, just try to make mangas, or even images, drafts, or storyboards which those will be based on. Or else, Ghibli will just be this animation production house that only has the skills and nothing else.
I was looking at the Ghibli timeline, and I realized that it was all just fun up to Spirited Away.
He just used this retirement trick of his to boost his movie that flopped
Actually, it's Suzuki-P whom I want to retire. As in right now.
Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi are the only Ghibli-affiliated people whom I can call amazing. Everyone else are scums who talk the talk but can't walk the walk.
He's a workaholic from the Showa era. He's the type who can't stay idle at home.
So what about his salary?
He just retired from making full-length feature films. He'll still do stuff that he likes, together with content they'll put in the Mitaka no Mori museum, and if they manage to make him do TV anime, then he'll earn bucketloads from DVD sales in the future from that.
I want him to do another one about Japanese mythology. Lupin is fine too.
This guy will make his comeback as a director.
Looks like he actually has w
He just announced his retirement because he wanted the Golden Lion award. He probably wasn't even serious when he said that. His works may be outstanding, but his personality is crass.
This just sounds like the usual Suzuki expressing his love and admiration for him in his own way. Suzuki's actually the one who holds Hayao Miyazaki in the highest regard.
Teaching the younger generation? (LOL)
"Destroying" these youngsters is the right word here.
Retire after making a winter arc for Totoro. Not the digest of the ending or something.
Maybe he doesn't have any other hobbies? He's probably the type of person who can't have long conversations with people outside of work. I think that goes for all old people w
Better make Ghibli Land a reality
He probably has nowhere else to go w
Takahata-san's movies may be from Ghibli, but they haven't grossed well in the box office, right? After Grave of the Fireflies, he only did Tonari no Yamada-kun and Kaguya Hime
I like oldies such as Payao and Mr. Suzuki ww
The way they express things through anime is truly wonderful. Even an amateur can tell how much soul they've poured into their work, even from the mere walking motion of regular people. I'm actually finding myself being more impressed by those minuscule details rather than the story itself.
So is he going for the bit "I'm so cool since I'm treating Hayao like a nuisance" again? I'm tired of this guy reusing this kind of joke.
If he's still so full of energy then make a new movie w That or adapt the manga version of Nausicaa into anime, and do it for around 2 seasons. That will also help the Ghibli employees since that'll bring money into the company.
Hey Hayao, hurry up and make a movie
Looks like he won't be able to do any more full-length feature films. So please make around 12 short feature films that run 10 minutes each, and please show them for 2 hours straight instead.
Countries like Japan actually aren't good when it comes to making everyone involved in one project cooperate to produce a single output. They end up relying on the abilities of a genius, in this case, like Miyazaki. And there's no one who'd dare oppose those geniuses, because if they do, they'd get left out of the circle. That's what happens whatever you do.
Hurry up with a sequel that depicts the grand aerial battle of Laputa remnants vs. humans

Return of the Dandy 1966
Ruffles foaming over the shirt-fronts of dinner-jackets and lace spilling out of the sleeves, tight-fitting pants, worn by young men who will demand 20 sittings at a tailor to be sure that the length of the vent is just so, that the trouser leg moves an inch bell-wise at the bottom! There are tales of Beau Brummell and Oscar Wilde, interviews with David Mlinaric, Patrick Lichfield and Rupert Lycett-Green of Blades. Musings on Pop Stars, Photographers, Hung On You, custom made shirts by the dozen and much more...it's all here, in this excellent in-depth 6 page feature on dandyism, originally published in 1966.
RETURN OF THE DANDY
Ruffles foam over the shirt-fronts of the dinner-jackets and lace spills out of the sleeves. Velvet pantaloons, which would have raised eyebrows if seen on men three years ago, attract hardly a glance anymore. The jackets are increasingly waisted, flare sharply over the hips and are getting almost Edwardian in length. The trousers fit so tightly that the more extreme ones are hard to sit down in and look best only when the man in them is standing almost at attention. There has not been such elegance, style and boldness in men's clothes in London since Oscar Wilde. The new wave of English dandyism started, most people agree, about five years ago. Young David Mlinaric, a designer, and one of the best dressed young men in London, thinks pop music had a good deal to do with it. ''The pop singers have the panache of the movie stars in the thirties. The pop singers and designers and film stars dress adventurously - and the others have followed them. Also, people today are more interested in young people than ever before - and they copy what the young people do.''
Patrick Lichfield, another of the best dressed young English men, thinks that the adventurousness of people's occupations has a lot to do with their clothes. He himself is an Earl, but he's also a photographer. ''Many people,'' he points out, ''are still stuck in environments like the city where conservative dress is absolutely required. But these days film stars, pop singers, hairdressers, photographers have all become respectable people. People like us can dress as we like: we can experiment. If a duke wandered into a cocktail party without a tie, people would find it odd, but if a film star did it, he'd be accepted. Presently, the duke might even follow suit.''
The revolution in men's clothes has even deeper roots than that. All the great periods of dandyism have occurred in periods of revolutionary upheaval in the pecking order of society. The Regency dandies followed the Napoleonic wars, a period when the monarchy and aristocracy were despised and a new middle class was beginning to emerge. The French wave of dandyism (strictly an import from England) followed the Revolution of 1830, again with a great levelling of social barriers. The Edwardian dandies followed the industrial revolution when the money and power structure shifted from the landed aristocracy to the new industrial magnates. The new dandies of today are living in an age when the caste system in England is breaking down at both top and bottom.
Like Nicholas Hilliard's Elizabethan dandy, today's dandy, Dennis Stansfield (above), looks effective in a rural setting. Stansfield, a 20-year old commercial artist, designs his own clothes and has a tailor in Tooting. His sister-in-law makes his shirts.
The greatest of all dandies, Beau Brummell, was the most scornful of men. (''You can't call that thing a coat?'') He had no title, no fortune, no profession, not even a carriage; he had nothing but a superb arrogance and assurance and presence; with these weapons alone he was copied, quoted, much feared, greatly respected, and wielded very real power. When the Prince Regent (who became George IV) broke with him, he remarked disdainfully of the future monarch: ''I made him what he is today and I can unmake him.'' This Brummellian scorn and self-assurance is very much a part of the make-up of the young pop set. The young film stars, photographers, models, designers and pop singers don't give a damn what their fathers or you or I or anyone else think of their far-out clothes or their far-out behaviour. Albert Camus has called the dandy the archetype of the human being in revolt against society. Almost always the dandy is thumbing his nose at the rest of the pack. The great Beau himself, some of his admirers think, was in the privacy of his own heart, mocking the very dandyism for which he was admired.
Lichfield, when I talked to him, had just come out of his dark-room, dressed casually in a polo-necked sweater and corduroy trousers. Lichfield looks well turned out in even the most casual clothes. ''Some people dress with flair alone.'' he says. I think Mlinaric is the best dressed man I know. Some of his effects are sheer audacity. I saw him one night in evening suit with a marvellous ruffled shirt. I admired it and he told me he'd just pinned some ruffles on a plain white shirt. It looked great.'' Lichfield admits he spends ''a fortune'' on his clothes, and says that some of his suits are total failures. ''I wear them two or three times, then never again.'' We toured his wardrobe. Twenty-six suits. ''I like brown suits very much.'' Many of today's young dandies like brown. ''Tweeds for the country.'' He showed a grey wooly one. ''I like big buckles.'' He showed me one immense silver one on a black belt. ''I think these buckles are going to be very fashionable. I love suede coats.'' He has four of varying cut. ''For shooting...'' He brought out a pair of bottle-green corduroy breeches. ''I've ordered all my gamekeepers to wear these.''
He opened a drawer packed with sweaters. ''I have a lot of polo-necked jerseys, mostly green and beige. They cost me a fortune in cleaning because you can only wear them two or three times. Now here's my most precious possession...'' He pulled out a pair of worn, patched and splendidly faded Levis. ''If the house was burning down, this is what I'd rescue first. The rest of my clothes can be replaced but it takes years of wear to get that lovely patina. American trousers are the only things I buy ready-made.'' He has 50 shirts, most of them custom-made from Harvie & Hudson at £6 apiece. When a shirt catches his fancy, he may buy one and ship it to Hong Kong to be copied by the dozen in silk. He has about 50 ties, many of the patterned pastel type which is very with it at the moment, but he also likes severely plain black knitted ties. He takes very good care of his clothes and is exasperated by people who don't. ''I know people who throw clothes on the floor that have cost them a fortune.'' He has an electric trouser-press in his bedroom which presses his trousers while he's in the bath (the jacket hangs itself out as part of the gadget). ''I haven't had a suit pressed since I left the Army — but cleaning costs me a fortune.'' I don't understand people who dress simply to keep warm,'' says Lichfield. ''A man should enjoy his clothes. He dresses to attract the girls —unlike the girls, who dress to impress one another. I have an idea all men dress to be sexy like cock pheasants in the mating season. I always dress more carefully the first time I take a girl out than the second. English girls, I think, are more adventurous in their tastes than girls of other countries and they admire adventurously dressed men.''
Among the most adventurous is Mlinaric. Standing in the immense square drawing-room of his Tite Street house (another great dandy, Oscar Wilde, lived in this street, a block away), Mlinaric was wearing a brown (he too, likes brown) double-breasted jacket that buttoned almost to the neck, the lapels edged in black, with short sleeves in order to display the cuffs of the shirt. His suits, he said, were getting more brightly coloured. His latest, of which he expected much, was cinnamon-coloured. ''Clothes are my greatest extravagance,'' he says. ''I feel very strongly about the way clothes are stitched. I'm tremendously interested in the best materials as well as the cut. I think a great many of the Carnaby Street clothes are very badly put together and of poor material.''
Ted Dawson, male model, spends about £500 a year on clothes. His wardrobe includes 100 ties, 75 shirts, 30 suits, 14 jackets.
Above: The wonderful Michael Rainey 25, who designed all the clothes for his boutique Hung On You, discusses ties with journalist Christopher Gibbs. (extreme right).
How well dressed are today's young men in comparison with the great dandies of the past? Hardly within whistling distance, I think. Max Beerbohm, the last of the dandies, wrote of Beau Brummell: ''Is it not to his fine scorn of accessories that we trace the first aim of modern dandyism, the production of the supreme effort through means the least extravagant? In certain congruities of dark cloth, in the rigid perfection of lines, in the symmetry of the gloves with the hands, lay the secret of Mr Brummell's miracle. He ever was most economical, most scrupulous of means.'' None of today's dandies lives up to these uncompromising standards (nor did Beerbohm). Brummell himself would have nothing but freezing contempt for Carnaby Street.
The real dandies buy their suits at Blades in Dover Street. Eric Joy, the partner and chief designer, has a good deal of Brummellian scorn for most of the cutters and designers of Savile Row and thinks all mens clothes designed between 1914 and 1960 were a wasteland of mediocrity. ''Up to five years ago, masculinity was to be a good rugger player,'' he says scornfully. ''I thought it was about time we designed a collection that made men look like men, not bloody Daleks.'' He haunted the Victoria and Albert Museum for ideas. Many of the jackets are the modified descendants of military uniforms which are in fact the ancestors of many great English men's suits.'' Rupert Lycett Green, proprietor of Blades, a bit of a dandy himself (though he denies it), lists as a barely adequate wardrobe for a well-dressed man: two dinner jackets (silk for summer, worsted for winter), with perhaps a velvet evening suit to boot; one grey suit; one black suit; a couple of working suits, both comfortable and elegant; a country suit of lightweight tweed; two light summer suits; one travelling grey suit; one crushproof traveling suit for air travel and trains; three overcoats (one dark evening coat, one tweedy raglan type for country, one short for motoring or town wear); at least two sports or odd jackets; half a dozen assorted slacks or odd trousers; 50 shirts and 50 ties. Blades is opening its own shop in New York soon, but design there will be severely modified. The extreme dandyism quite acceptable in London still has strong homosexual implications in New York, and in fact everywhere else. London is years ahead of the rest of the world in having got rid of the homosexual overtones of dandyism. Most of today's English dandies are blatantly heterosexual.
Above: Rupert Lycett Green, proprietor of Blades where the best beaux are dressed, is opening a new shop in New York soon, but designs will be severely modified.
Historically, dandyism has had a homosexual tint only since its last flowering in the nineties, and you can blame Oscar Wilde for that. Most of the earlier dandies were conspicuously hetero — certainly the Regency rakes were. Brummell himself was thought to be glacially indifferent to women and sex and totally immersed in himself. The Victorian attitude toward dandies and dandyism was laid down originally by Thomas Carlyle in ''Sartor Resartus''. Before ''Sartor Resartus'', dandyism had been reasonably respectable, even admirable. However, Carlyle's Scottish puritanism so changed the emotional climate toward dandyism that Edward Bulwer Lytton eliminated whole passages of ''Pelham'', his very successful novel about a dandy. Ever since Carlyle's outburst, dandies have been considered figures of fun, and since Wilde's day, probably homosexual. Remnants of the Victorian disapproval are still with us. A recent article by John Morgan in the New Statesman dripped with scorn about the new wave of dandyism which he called ''tedious to the point of tears.'' ''I find it impossible,'' he wrote, ''to make any emphatic leap into the nature of young men who will demand 20 sittings at a tailor to be sure that the length of the vent is just so, that the trouser leg moves an inch bell-wise at the bottom.'' Morgan also states in his article '' No one suffers from elegance but from the prose it produces,'' stating clearly that any writing about dandyism is a bore. This simply isn't true. Dandies and dandyism have a long and honourable literary tradition, both as authors and as subjects of novels and plays, some good, some appalling, but almost all enormously popular. ''Pelham'' by Bulwer and ''Vivian Grey'' by Benjamin Disraeli (himself a great dandy) were enormously popular; both had dandies as heroes.
Dandyism was one of the principal preoccupations of Stendhal in ''The Red and The Black'', though his own attitude toward the dandies is contradictory. Balzac, who considered himself a dandy though no one else did. wrote ''La toilette est l'expression de la societé.'' His ''Comedie Humaine'' was full of dandies. Baudelaire was not only a dandy but also a philosopher of dandyism — ''La culte de soi-meme'', as he called it. The novels of Dickens and of Thackeray (who loathed dandies) are full of dandies and the cult of dandyism. Pinero's and Shaw's plays are larded with dandies, and Wilde's plays, of course, consist of nothing else. ''Dorian Gray'' was dandyism at its most decadent and it has helped immeasurably to give dandyism a bad name. Within the last three years, the winds of disapproval have begun to abate. There are temperamental similarities and at the same time great differences between today's dandies and the bucks of the Regency. Most important, the present crop are conspicuously doers of things, like film making, hairdressing or acting. They are notoriously energetic and ambitious. The Regency dandy —especially Brummell —considered any form of activity except clothes to be beneath them. Beau, again probably in pure mockery, considered even the forming of an opinion slightly wearisome. Once, when a visitor asked which of the English lakes he thought most beautiful, he called the servant in: ''Which of the lakes do I find most beautiful?'' Brummell's wit would be admired by some of the avant-garde film-makers. He was not a man of mot or epigram. A shrug, a lifted eyebrow, sometimes nothing but the memory of a known Brummellian attitude made their own silent but devastating witticisms. When you can be witty without words, why use them?

Whatever Happened to Stephen Topper & Topper Shoes?
If you were to browse through the men's fashion section of every other issue of Rave magazine from the mid 1960s onwards, I guarantee you would soon notice that the names Stephen Topper & Topper Shoes usually follow one after the other on a fairly regular basis. Much favoured by stylish young men about town, Topper Shoes were without a doubt one of the most happening footwear brands of the era. The clientele list included the British pop hierarchy such as The Rolling Stones, The Small Faces and The Who, as well as visiting international acts like Bob Dylan and Johnny Halliday...and yet, they seem to have 'almost' vanished from history. There is barely a trace of their legacy to be found online apart from the occasional Carnaby Street reference and a couple of interesting threads posted on 1960s/1970s style forums. Although in fairness, they have been name checked in several books and slightly elaborated upon in others through the personal stories of former customers, but there is no definitive account of the brand's heritage or any archival examples available all in one place that I am currently aware of.
Topper shoes were already well established by the early 1960s, with three branches in London, one located at 68 Queensway in W2. and the others at 34 Coventry Street and 57 Shaftesbury Avenue in W1. But they really came into their own when 18 year old Steven Topper, the owner's son, took the reins and headed for Carnaby Street. I don't have an exact date but he was definitely trading there by 1965, however, the earliest reference that i've come across in print from my personal magazine collection dates back to the 'London Swings' issue of Rave magazine from April 1966. Topper Shoes located at 45 Carnaby St is included in the poptastic illustrated Raver's Map of London along with a brief description of the shop on the next page.
By the following year they were featured in the Gear Guide a 'Hip-pocket guide to Britain's Swinging Fashion Scene' and while still brief, it gives a more detailed account of how things were progressing. There were now two Topper Shoe shops on Carnaby Street, they were still at No.45 but also had a branch at No.9. The first one catered for men only, it was open Monday-Saturday 9.00 am-6.o0 pm with late night shopping until 7.00 pm on Thursday and Friday, with the range costing between three pounds to ten Guineas. The other shop at No.9 had a 'beautifully cool interior in weird purply shades' it kept the same opening hours as the previous one but catered for Girls and Men..I've never seen any examples of their Girls shoes but apparently they had a wide and original range which cost from three pounds to five pounds-fifteen for shoes and from ninety-nine-and-elevenpence to seven pounds-nineteen and six for boots! All of the collections, which perfectly complimented the latest clothing for sale on the street were designed by Stephen Topper himself, and manufactured to a high standard in France and Italy.
According to Tom Salter's book about Carnaby Street there were a total of five Topper shoe shops in 1970, i'm assuming at this point that he is referring to the original three that I have mentioned plus the last two..but then again, maybe not, perhaps some of the originals had closed and there were more branches in Carnaby Street or at new locations? It also says that the owner was a chap called 'Monty Stewart'...So, was Topper merely a business name rather than the actual family surname? While researching material for this post I came across a photograph of another branch at 146 Markham Street in SW3 (undated) and also a piece of film footage which features a Topper Shoe shop located on the King's Road circa 1977 but unfortunately the trail runs cold after that..Which leads me back to my original question...Whatever happened to Stephen Topper and Topper Shoes?

A close-up of the Raver's map, According to this, Topper Shoes located at number 45 Carnaby Street is situated between John Stephen's Tre Camp (No.46) and Ravel (No.44), but in reality it was actually next to Inderwicks the Tobacconist & Pipe Specialist on the left and Ravel on the right. (April 1966).
A rare photograph of the Topper Shoe shop facade at 45 Carnaby Street, you can just about see Ravel, but the door on the left is clearly Inderwicks the tobacconist shop, which intriguingly also seems to be located at number 45 Carnaby St! Inderwicks, the Pipe & Tobacco Specialist at 45 Carnaby St, illustrated by Malcolm English for Tom Salter's Carnaby Street book in 1970. The company was founded in 1797 by John Inderwick, the original shop located on Wardour Street was one of the earliest tobacconists in London. They may have seemed out of place in the midst of the Carnaby St pop explosion but stayed put nevertheless, resisting several tempting offers on their lease throughout this period. The pop revolution actually enhanced their business rather threaten it, as curious Carnaby St shoppers spilled off the busy pavement and ventured in to buy their specialist tobacco blends, cigarettes and the long clay Churchwardens, Corncobs and Meerschaum pipes which they had been selling for 170 years. Above Inderwicks was the very first Aristos Boutique, it comprised of two rooms on the first floor, a small shop area in the front and a workroom in the back in which Constantinou Aristos ran up garments for girls. The son of a master tailor, he had graduated from the London College of Fashion in 1965 and with the profits from the fledgling boutique he soon opened up his second shop named Blooshp at 45 Newburgh Street, W1. He was eventually joined in the business by his younger brother Achillea, the two went on to expand the company, later renaming it Ariella in 1971.
Bob Dylan photographed by Barry Feinstein trying on shoes in Topper's (1966), He was at the end of a world tour at this point in time, playing The Royal Albert Hall twice while in London on May 26th & May 27th, so this was more than likely taken sometime on or around those dates. There seems to be a wall of fame in the background, perhaps made up of other well known celebrity customers, included are 'The Who' on Bob's immediate left, unmistakable in their pop art regalia.

The facade of another Topper shoe shop, which was included in a short news report for Thames Television in 1977 about the 'health concerns' associated with the fashion fad for wearing platform shoes! I'm not sure of the exact address of this branch, I think this is most likely to be the side view of the building rather than the main entrance, but it is definitely located somewhere on the King's Road. The precise number of the shop could be close to 59b, which is just seen on a door above the head of the interviewer for a couple of seconds at one point. I can't quite make out the name above the premises behind the Topper van opposite, but just beyond is a branch of Irvine Sellars' Mates boutique. Several interviews take place throughout the footage, there is one in particular filmed right outside Topper's with a young chap who seems to be fairly knowledgeable about the customer base, I can't help wondering if this is the manager of the shop or perhaps the elusive Steven Topper himself? I've also included a link to some footage of outtakes from the same film at the end of the post which provides excellent examples of popular street footwear and fashion of the time, lots of platform shoes, boots and wedged heels worn with flares, maxis and minis! Although, there is some discrepancy regarding the correct date via Pathé, who have credited it as 1970 this time round rather than 1977.
Could this be the elusive Stephen Topper?

Dissociating the Neural Basis of Conceptual Self-Awareness from Perceptual Awareness and Unaware Self-Processing
AbstractConceptual self-awareness is a mental state in which the content of one's consciousness refers to a particular aspect of semantic knowledge about oneself. This form of consciousness plays a crucial role in shaping human behavior; however, little is known about its neural basis. Here, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a visual masked priming paradigm to dissociate the neural responses related to the awareness of semantic autobiographical information (one's own name, surname, etc.) from the awareness of information related to any visual stimulus (perceptual awareness), as well as from the unaware processing of self-relevant stimuli. To detect brain activity that is highly selective for self-relevant information, we used the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) adaptation approach, which goes beyond the spatial limitations of conventional fMRI. We found that self-awareness was associated with BOLD adaptation in the medial frontopolar-retrosplenial areas, whereas perceptual awareness and unaware self-processing were associated with BOLD adaptation in the lateral fronto-parietal areas and the inferior temporal cortex, respectively. Thus, using a direct manipulation of conscious awareness we demonstrate for the first time that the neural basis of conceptual self-awareness is neuroanatomically distinct from the network mediating perceptual awareness of the sensory environment or unaware processing of self-related stimuli.
Functional MRI of Human Eyeblink Classical Conditioning in Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
AbstractPrenatal alcohol exposure has been linked to a broad range of developmental deficits, with eyeblink classical conditioning (EBC) among the most sensitive endpoints. This fMRI study compared EBC-related brain activity in 47 children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial FAS (PFAS), heavily exposed (HE) non-syndromal children, and healthy controls. All of the children had previously participated in two EBC studies conducted as part of our longitudinal study of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Although learning-related behavioral differences were seen in all groups during the scans, controls showed more conditioned responses (CR) than the alcohol-exposed groups. Despite lower conditioning levels relative to controls, the exposed groups exhibited extensive cerebellar activations. Specifically, children with FAS/PFAS showed increased activation of cerebellar lobule VI in session 2, while HE children showed increased activation in session 1. Continuous measures of prenatal alcohol use correlated with learning-related activations in cerebellum and frontal cortices. Only controls showed significant cerebellar activation—CR correlations in the deep nuclei and lateral lobule VI, suggesting that these key regions supporting EBC may be functionally disorganized in alcohol-exposed children. These findings are the first to characterize abnormalities in brain function associated with the behavioral conditioning deficits seen in children with prenatal alcohol exposure.
Retrosplenial Cortical Neurons Encode Navigational Cues, Trajectories and Reward Locations During Goal Directed Navigation
AbstractThe retrosplenial cortex (RSC) plays an important role in memory and spatial navigation. It shares functional similarities with the hippocampus, including the presence of place fields and lesion-induced impairments in spatial navigation, and the RSC is an important source of visual-spatial input to the hippocampus. Recently, the RSC has been the target of intense scrutiny among investigators of human memory and navigation. fMRI and lesion data suggest an RSC role in the ability to use landmarks to navigate to goal locations. However, no direct neurophysiological evidence of encoding navigational cues has been reported so the specific RSC contribution to spatial cognition has been uncertain. To examine this, we trained rats on a T-maze task in which the reward location was explicitly cued by a flashing light and we recorded RSC neurons as the rats learned. We found that RSC neurons rapidly encoded the light cue. Additionally, RSC neurons encoded the reward and its location, and they showed distinct firing patterns along the left and right trajectories to the goal. These responses may provide key information for goal-directed navigation, and the loss of these signals may underlie navigational impairments in subjects with RSC damage.
Changes in Brain Activation Associated with Spontaneous Improvization and Figural Creativity After Design-Thinking-Based Training: A Longitudinal fMRI Study
AbstractCreativity is widely recognized as an essential skill for entrepreneurial success and adaptation to daily-life demands. However, we know little about the neural changes associated with creative capacity enhancement. For the first time, using a prospective, randomized control design, we examined longitudinal changes in brain activity associated with participating in a five-week design-thinking-based Creative Capacity Building Program (CCBP), when compared with Language Capacity Building Program (LCBP). Creativity, an elusive and multifaceted construct, is loosely defined as an ability to produce useful/appropriate and novel outcomes. Here, we focus on one of the facets of creative thinking—spontaneous improvization. Participants were assessed pre- and post-intervention for spontaneous improvization skills using a game-like figural Pictionary-based fMRI task. Whole-brain group-by-time interaction revealed reduced task-related activity in CCBP participants (compared with LCBP participants) after training in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior/paracingulate gyrus, supplementary motor area, and parietal regions. Further, greater cerebellar–cerebral connectivity was observed in CCBP participants at post-intervention when compared with LCBP participants. In sum, our results suggest that improvization-based creative capacity enhancement is associated with reduced engagement of executive functioning regions and increased involvement of spontaneous implicit processing.

El estilo no tiene edad. ¿O si?: Old women #streetstyle

Markets Are Still Dancing To The QE Two-Step...But Is the Music About To Stop?
Just a quick thought about what is driving the US stock market. The chart below shows the Wilshire 5000 (representing all publicly traded US equities in red), the Federal Reserve balance sheet (black), and excess reserves held at the Federal Reserve Bank by the largest of private(?) banks (likely a majority of these reserves held by foreign banks). What you may notice is the rise in equities since '09 correlating with the rise in the Federal Reserves balance sheet until QE ended. Then a momentary pause in equities during 2015, and another strong leg higher since. That strong leg higher correlates nicely to the drawdown in the excess reserves held at the FRB, particularly since 2016.
The chart below shows these dynamics since 2008. The Federal Reserves purchase of $3.6 trillion in new "assets"...and the continual rise in excess reserves banks hold at the Fed until September, 2014. As the reserves and QE ceased rising and were essentially flat, the market began rolling over. However, by late 2015 banks began withdrawing those excess reserves and putting them to work...and the equity markets positively responded.

PERCUTIAN PALING PANJANG
Pemandangan seluruh bandar Miri
Sepupu bersama anaknya
Bersama anak sepupu, Anas
MMMuahhh abg syg adik Anas
inilah peserta trip Miri-Brunei
Eihaab: taklah, tiap minggu...
Rumah rakyat Brunei (penjawat awam)
Rumah penjawat awam (dalam pembinaan)
Akhirnya, jadi begini...hahaha (kepenatan)
Irfan bersama duapupu Brunei, Mehyar..
Murtabak Indomee kegemaran ummi =)
Kegemaran Irfan, Ais Milo tabur..

|Happy 4th Blogiversary and Why I Love Being Canadian||Current Mood: I'm pretty sure I'm going to run myself into the ground.|
Current Song: These Kids by Sam Roberts
It's been crazy days these last 4 years as I think back. I almost can't believe that I started blogging back in 2006. I'm even more surprised that I've lasted this long. Who knew that something I was doing just as an outlet because of a horrendously difficult occupation I had would turn into something that I love doing? Life takes us on weird turns. Who knows maybe one day I might actually stop blogging. But I doubt that day is coming soon.
What I love about blogging the most is that I can express myself - fully and unabashadly. For those of you who have had the chance to meet me, you'll know I'm a big fan of candour. If you meet me in public, I talk like this. This is my voice. I don't think, other than singing, I've fully been able to express myself. Running from the contemplative to the crazy, I've been all over the place. And what's more is that people read and I have made some great friends over the years as I've been blogging. So a big thank you to those who drop by this space to see what crazy shenanigans I've been up to :)
I'm looking to take it to the next level now. I'd love suggestions on content you might want to see or things that I should talk about more. Should I start an advice column? Should I have guest-bloggers more often? Should I start a photo feature? Let me know! I love interact with you folks.
And now, I'm going to brag a bit about my country. Thanks for bearing with me.
Since the Vancouver 2010 Olympics started, I haven't spoken much about our national pride. It's probably because we're Canadian and we don't really announce it to the world all the time. The Prime Minister had to beg us before the games actually began. And I think that uncharacteristic burst of patriotism may even have offended countries who weren't used to the nice Canadians trash-talking. But that's another story.
My family came to Canada nearly two decades ago. And up until the year 2000, I never felt at home here. It's a beautiful city, but part of me was always tied to the fact that I had no home city for many years. I chose not to get attached (in case I had to leave again). For those of you who have visited, you can attest to how beautiful it is. I only started to see value in it when I turned 18. Many Canadians will tell you that there is nothing like breathing in the air and thinking "I'm home" as you approach your airport.
Now I know, that if and when I leave (which will hopefully be soon), I'll always come back "home" because my family and friends are here. The streets I've walked a million times are here too. My knowledge base comes from here. My outlook on life is probably about as Canadian as I'm ever going to get.
I love being Canadian because it agrees with my sensibilities. I can be friendly without being weird; I can be interesting because I have a background that fits into a cultural and respected mosaic; I can be proud because we do good things; I can make change and work with many ideas and viewpoints respectfully; And I can show off just a little bit because my country is one of the best to live in (albeit a little bit cold at times).
I love being Canadian. We like our Hockey, we like our coffee (and our beer, but I don't drink) and we love our flag. So if you meet a Canadian, high five them. We're worth getting to know :)
|Fa La La: December Photo Walk||Current Mood: So Tired!|
Current Song: Clocks by Coldplay. It's been in my head since yesterday.
Sorry I've been AWOL for a bit. I've been prepping my content for this blog. I appear to be going soft in my old age, and so my sister, friend and I hit the town yesterday for some lights viewing. Vancouver, as you all know (by means of being envious), is a stunning city and comes alive during the holiday. I thought I would share the photo walk that we took yesterday with you and spread the christmas joy (or what have you). So here you are!
PS: I have no tripod, so I had to shoot these by hand. So that means, 1. They're a bit shakey, blurred, though I tried my very best and 2. I have no tripod

❖ weiter ►
