A Silicon Valley for Drones, in North Dakota
By The New York Times
“California and New York want what we’ve got,” said Shawn Muehler, a 30-year-old Fargo resident, gazing at a horizon of empty fields, silos, windbreak trees and hardly any people. A winged craft traces the air, mapping a field with pinpoint accuracy for his start-up, a drone software company called Botlink. “They like drones, but they’ve got a steep learning curve ahead.”

For years, entrepreneurs have come here to farm and to drill for oil and natural gas. Now a new, tech-savvy generation is grabbing a piece of the growing market for drone technology and officials want to help them do it here, where there is plenty of open space and — unlike in other sparsely populated states — lots of expertise already in place.

Silicon Valley has the big money and know-how, Mr. Muehler and others say, but North Dakota can take unmanned aerial vehicles, as the officials prefer to call drones, from a fast-growing hobby to an industry. And just as Silicon Valley got its start with military contracts, entrepreneurs and cooperative universities, they believe they can do the same with drones.

“The potential up here is tremendous,” said Jack Dalrymple, the state’s governor. “It’s not about supporting a company or two; it’s creating the leading edge of an industry.”

North Dakota has spent about $34 million fostering the state’s unmanned aerial vehicle business, most notably with a civilian industrial park for drones near Grand Forks Air Force Base. The base, a former Cold War installation, now flies nothing but robot aircraft for the United States military and Customs and Border Protection.

Right now, private sector drones are where personal computers were in the 1970s: a hobbyist technology waiting to become mainstream. The technology research firm Gartner says that, barring regulatory hurdles, the United States drone business could be worth $7 billion in a decade.

Companies are moving fast. Last month, Amazon released a video showing its planned delivery drone, and companies like Google and Facebook are working on big drone projects. DJI, a Chinese company that is the world’s largest maker of small drones, was funded last spring at a valuation of $10 billion.

Small drones may bedevil cities with privacy concerns, even landing on the White House lawn, but rural states with farming, oil and rail lines see many practical reasons to put robots in the sky. Infrared imaging can judge crop health. Cameras can spot leaks and cracks in pipelines. Smaller copters can inspect windmill blades. Livestock can be located easily.

Judging from Mr. Muehler’s proving grounds, if the occasional experimental craft crashes, it is unlikely to hit much beyond dirt. And with money, expertise and need here, people will keep trying.

Grand Forks Air Force Base, 80 miles north of Fargo, has been an all-drone base since 2013. Big Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicles, made by Northrop Grumman, fly reconnaissance missions from the Yukon to Venezuela from there.

In a smaller brick building in Fargo, Mr. Muehler was once part of a North Dakota Air National Guard unit that flies missions over the Mideast and Afghanistan.

Customs and Border Protection uses the Grand Forks field to patrol from Seattle to the Great Lakes with slightly smaller Predator drones. Sometimes those pilots take over from their Customs counterparts in Texas, patrolling the Rio Grande from screens 80 miles south of the Canadian border.

Where B-52 bombers stood ready with nuclear bombs in the Cold War, the country’s first commercial unmanned aerial vehicle industrial park is under construction. Northrop Grumman and General Atomics, the Predator maker, are taking space to train pilots for international sales of the craft.

Other businessmen are looking at modifying their craft for things like high-altitude surveillance of railroad tracks and pipelines. Involta, an Iowa-based operator of data centers that has already created a windmill inspection business in Grand Forks, is looking at building facilities specialized in collecting aerial information.

A company called Field of View, near the planned site of the industrial park, makes aerial sensing equipment. An outfit called the Unmanned Applications Institute is working with providers away from North Dakota on things like local drone manufacture and warehousing.

Nearby, the University of North Dakota, which already trains many of the nation’s commercial pilots and the air traffic controllers of some 18 countries, has 200 students learning to fly drones in a four-year program that started in 2009; 61 students have graduated from it. North Dakota State University, in Fargo, has also started teaching drone courses.

Besides military contracts and educational talent, North Dakota also has high-tech talent. In 1999, Amazon purchased an online seller of tools and home improvement gear in Grand Forks, and the company now develops customer service software there. In 2001, Microsoft paid $1.1 billion for Great Plains Software of Fargo, and it now has an office there.

The area has thousands of software engineers and not a few millionaires itching to get into the next big thing.

“Every top engineer in all of Fargo works for Botlink,” Mr. Muehler boasted. “We have the top 10 engineers in town.”

Mr. Muehler, who was educated as a pilot at North Dakota State, started on what became Botlink while flying missions from the brick building in Fargo. Governor Dalrymple refers to the military site as “once a well-kept-secret facility,” since its purpose has become common knowledge in the city of about 115,000 people.

One night in early 2014, Mr. Muehler saw a report on Fox News about a hobbyist drone that flew into the airspace at La Guardia Airport in New York. That’s when he hit upon the idea for his business.

“I figured there has to be some kind of software that can give awareness, let a drone know about things like boundaries and weather,” he said.

Alex Kube, a high school friend who was working at the same facility, started making the software. Seven months later, he spoke at a meeting of local entrepreneurs and collected $500,000 in angel funding from local investors. Botlink was formed several months later when Mr. Muehler met Terri Zimmerman, a former chief financial officer at Great Plains who grew up on a farm near the Canadian border.

“We want to be the Microsoft of the industry,” said Ms. Zimmerman, who is now Botlink’s chief executive, and runs another company, Packet Digital, involved in low-power semiconductors used for, among other things, military drones.

So far, the company has raised $3 million more from private investors. “That’s like $14 million in Silicon Valley,” Ms. Zimmerman said.

North Dakota Drone Test Site Set to Fly High at All Hours
By ABC News
Of the six sites in the U.S. where researchers are trying to figure out how to integrate unmanned aircraft into civilian airspace, only North Dakota's can fly high both day and night.

The Federal Aviation Administration approved a plan last week that allows drones to be flown up to 1,200 feet above the entire state and permits flights at night, a combination that makesNorth Dakota unique, since other test sites are limited to a 200-foot blanket and daylight hours.

"It really expands the type of operations you can conduct," said Nicholas Flom, director of safety for the Northern Plains UAS Test Site.

For example, some precision agriculture sensors are designed to function at a minimum altitude of 250 feet, he said, and drones that would be flown to look for hot spots in wildfires or used for search-and-rescue missions generally work better at a higher altitude because it gives the cameras a broader range.

Alaska, New York, Nevada, Texas and Virginia also were selected in December 2013 as national test sites for unmanned aircraft, which the FAA does not currently allow for commercial use. As for why North Dakota's wide-open skies were chosen for the higher altitudes, the FAA referred questions to the North Dakota Department of Commerce.

Officials at the Northern Plains site wasted no time getting up in the air at night last week with the Draganflyer X4ES, which was monitored by three University of North Dakota pilots.

"With the lights on the aircraft, it's uniquely easy to see it," Flom said. "It's a little bit different perspective when they take off and land, just from a depth perspective standpoint, but there's no problem seeing anything."

Flying drones at night can have many benefits, said Mark Hastings, the test site's director of operations. Infrared sensors, which can detect people or animals on the ground, seem to work better in cooler temperatures. There's also less air traffic in the nighttime hours and usually lower wind speeds, a challenge for drone pilots especially in North Dakota.

The schedule for nighttime and high-altitude flights has not been determined, but the FAA will be closely monitoring the number of flights, Flom said.

And getting high up has a lot of value, too, allowing cameras to collect more data over a larger area more quickly.

North Dakota State University professor John Nowatzki is spearheading a research project that would use a large drone to monitor crop conditions and plans to ask for a special permit to put an unmanned aircraft with a 35-foot wing span in the Red River Valley at heights of 3,000, 5,000 and 8,000 feet. The pictures from higher altitudes will be compared to those from a smaller drone at 400 feet and satellite images to see what's best at identifying crop conditions such as nutrient deficiencies, disease symptoms and specific weeds.

"The value of flying higher is what our research is going to be about in 2016," Nowatzki said.

NDSU Using Sensors to Identify Weed Infestations
By North Dakota Ag
North Dakota State University researchers have received a grant to demonstrate the use of electronic sensors to identify weed infestations in cropland remotely.

The project will identify which weeds are infesting specific crops, which parts of fields the weeds are infesting and the degree of the weed problem.

"Crop producers and crop consultants need to identify specific weed infestations growing in various crop fields to implement effective weed management regimes," says NDSU Extension Service agricultural machine systems specialist John Nowatzki, the lead investigator on this project.

Nowatzki, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department Chair Sreekala Bajwa and Extension weed specialist Rich Zollinger have teamed up with Kris Poulson, Casselton-area agricultural producer and consultant, and agricultural lead for Sentera LLC in North Dakota, for the project.

Sentera, a company based in Shakopee, Minn., that designs sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles and software technologies for a variety of uses, is the private- sector partner on this project. Company personnel will provide hardware and software engineering support for data collection and imagery processing.

The North Dakota Department of Commerce awarded an $85,500 Research ND grant for the weed project.

Project personnel are using an NDSU hand-held radio spectrometer and color, thermal and infrared sensors to measure light reflectance, intensity and color of weeds growing in NDSU greenhouses. They'll use the same hand-held sensor to collect data throughout the 2015 growing season in outdoor plot and field weed patches at NDSU's Carrington Research Extension Center and Prosper Research Site.

Researchers also are using commercial sensors designed for manned and unmanned aircraft to collect reflectance values on the same greenhouse, plot and field weeds. The researchers will correlate the data from the commercial sensors and hand-held spectrometer, then publish and share the results with commercial agribusinesses and crop producers for use in their operations.

The weeds they are identifying are kochia, wild buckwheat, green foxtail, wild oats and Canada thistle.

The researchers also are monitoring NDSU research fields and commercial crop fields on the ground to identify the weeds growing in each one. They'll monitor each field every other week with sensors and cameras to demonstrate the effectiveness of imagery in weed identification. They will use computer analysis software to establish positive identification.

This research will help producers spot weed problems early in the growing season so they can select the proper herbicide and get it applied on the crop.

"Earlier herbicide application results in reduced weed competition with the growing crops and correlates with higher yields," Nowatzki says.

Project results will be incorporated into NDSU Extension programs focused on helping producers and crop consultants use sensors to enhance their business activities. The information learned from this project also will be shared at a project field day.

          North Dakota UAV Business Grows
By Ag Week
The UAV industry continues to grow and evolve, and Field of View is growing and evolving with it.

New regulations for unmanned aerial vehicles proposed in February by the Federal Aviation Administration “are a breath of fresh air,” says David Dvorak, CEO of Grand Forks, N.D.-based Field of View. “They provide our industry with more confidence that this is going to happen. People are finally starting to invest in the technology, which is good for us.”

The company, which he launched in 2010, seeks to “bridge the gap between unmanned aircraft and precision agriculture,” as the company’s website puts it.

By all accounts, the use of UAVs, also known as drones and unmanned aircraft systems, can be a big plus in agriculture and other industries. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International estimates easing current restrictions of UAVs would create 70,000 jobs and generate $13.6 billion in economic impact within three years in the U.S.

The FAA’s new proposal, which could be enacted by the fall of 2016, would pave the way for widespread commercial use of drones weighing fewer than 55 pounds. The FAA wants to balance the economic value of commercial use against the safety risk.

“The rule, as proposed, would seem to be good for agriculture,” Dvorak says. “So the regulatory side seems to be falling into place at last.”

Field of View’s flagship product, GeoSnap, generally has drawn more interest overseas because other countries have fewer restrictions on air space. Now, with the FAA proposal, domestic interest is picking up.

GeoSnap is an add-on device for multispectral cameras mounted on either manned or unmanned aircraft. Such cameras capture images in the red, green and near-infrared bands, allowing users to visualize plant stress better than they can with most other camera systems, Dvorak says.

GeoSnap takes images captured by the multispectral camera and maps them with real-world coordinates, a process known as georeferencing. That allows users to know the aerial images’ exact location on the ground.

Field of View recently came out with a less expensive version of GeoSnap, known as GeoSnap Express, “that will be useful for some of our newer customers,” Dvorak says. “Sometimes you just want to try it (the technology), and this is a really good system to help people get up and going with it.”

GeoSnap Express costs $1,450 or $1,950, depending on the model. GeoSnap Pro, the original version, costs $7,000 or $9,000, depending on the model.

Field of View also is offering a new product that involves thermal payloads.

“We’re able to map vegetation temperature across the field, which will help give us an indication of where water stress might be and to detect where plants get sick,” Dvorak says.

And Field of View has begun working with Minneapolis-based PowerOfGround to offer image processing services. For more information, visit www.powerofground.com.

“Some people want to do that (image processing) themselves,” Dvorak says. “Others want somebody to do it for them.”

Dvorak grew up in St. Cloud, Minn., and came to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks to study engineering. At UND, he developed a special interest in the use of unmanned aircraft and multispectral cameras in precision agriculture.

He and another company employee work in Grand Forks. A third, an engineer, works in California. Field of View uses a Fargo, N.D., company for its international marketing.

“Good things are happening in our industry,” Dvorak says. “And we see that continuing.”

NDSU Evaluating Unmanned Aircraft System Technology
By Farm and Ranch Guide

North Dakota State University researchers are taking to the air to monitor crop and livestock research projects on the ground.

Several researchers on campus are working with colleagues at NDSU’s Carrington Research Extension Center to evaluate whether unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) can be effective management tools in crop and livestock production.

“There is currently much interest in using UAS in agriculture,” says John Nowatzki, the NDSU Extension Service’s agricultural machine systems specialist and the lead investigator on this project. “However, there is little research to show that UAS can be used effectively or economically for crop or livestock management.”

Researchers are using UAS-mounted thermal, infrared sensors and cameras that capture image data at specific frequencies to collect data from fields and livestock at specified times.

The researchers plan to identify plant emergence and populations in corn, soybeans and sunflowers, and nitrogen deficiencies in corn and wheat. They’re also hoping the UAS can help them make early plant health assessments, and spot disease and insect damage symptoms, weed infestations and indications of moisture stress on irrigated crops.

In addition, they plan to use the UAS to determine the impacts of tillage and crop rotations on crop emergence, vigor and yield, and the impacts of soil salinity on crop yields, as well as monitor the dry-down times of individual corn hybrids to determine when to harvest the crops.

“The objective is to find out which observations taken from the plane can translate into immediate management actions, or possibly some observations may lead to corrective action for the following season,” says NDSU professor and Extension agronomist Hans Kandel, who is one of the project’s co-investigators.

Crop production researchers have identified at least 40 research trials at the Carrington center they want included in the UAS project, according to Blaine Schatz, the center’s director.

“On the livestock side of our research efforts, we will mostly be observing the beef cattle within multiple projects, and the observations will focus on capturing images that may help to determine animal health contrasts and animal behavior patterns,” Schatz says.

For example, researchers plan to monitor the breeding activity of the center’s beef cattle, count the cattle in pastures to make sure they are where they are supposed to be, detect animals that are ill so they can be isolated from the rest of the herd and treated as quickly as possible, and identify animals that are aggressive toward other livestock or humans so they can be removed from herds.

The researchers also intend to monitor animal temperatures and determine the feedlot surface temperatures of various bedding materials to mitigate stress from extreme weather conditions.

“The individual NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center researchers will collaborate with project principal investigators to select appropriate sensors and monitoring schedules for their projects,” Nowatzki says. “These researchers also will collaborate with ABEN (NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department) personnel to correlate the UAS-sensed data with the data collected on the ground for each project.”

The first UAS flights were on May 5. The Federal Aviation Administration gave North Dakota approval in April for the UAS test flights.

A Research ND grant from the North Dakota Department of Commerce and a North Dakota Soybean Council research grant funded the project, Nowatzki says. The Research ND grant includes matching funds from two private-sector partners: the North Dakota Corn Council and LW Survey of Duluth, Minn.

The University of North Dakota’s Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Research, Education and Training is collaborating on this research by flying the UAS at the Carrington center. UND also will collect flight information from each flight of both UAS used in the project. The flight information will be shared with the FAA for its use in developing future UAS regulations.

In addition to finding out whether UAS are effective in monitoring crop and livestock production, the researchers plan to develop methods to convert the image data to information that’s useful to producers and crop consultants, and help producers identify how they can make use of UAS on their operations.

“The major benefit of UAS is that it offers a very affordable technology that the farmers or consultants can easily adopt,” says Sreekala Bajwa, NDSU ABEN chair and a UAS project co-investigator whose expertise is in remote sensing for precision agriculture. “It offers the flexibility that you can fly it anytime and at any area of interest with the proper safety regulations in place.”

She thinks another huge advantage is that UAS potentially could cover a whole farm in a day or a few days and provide the producer with a visual of his or her entire field.

“Monitoring the entire farm is a very time- and labor-intensive job,” she notes. “It is virtually impossible to look at all the field, even when a consultant is walking the fields. A UAS will allow the farmer or consultant to identify potential areas of concern and focus on those areas which may otherwise go undetected.”

Bajwa believes this one-year project is just the beginning.

“With our current research project, we are only touching the surface of possibilities,” she says. “Many researchers at NDSU are working in areas that can benefit from data collected from a UAS platform. I hope to see many more researchers taking active roles to capture this opportunity to address a research potential in their area of interest and, thus, positively impacting our state, region and nation in a significant way.”

Could studying deaf horses shed light on treatment in humans?

Over the years, Chemistry Prof. Koren Lipsett has owned and rescued horses. Today, they are a focus of her research on deafness in humans.

“My research lab focuses on genomic studies so we can understand human disease,” said Lipsett.

Prof. LipsettSo far, Lipsett and her students have looked at blind cats, fibroblast growth factor (hair length) in cattle, and for the past seven years, deafness in horses. They hope by researching these issues and genetic diseases in large mammals, it will help researchers better understand how to treat human genetic disorders, like congenital blindness and deafness.

Suzanne E. DiNello-Schleicher ’10, a biology and chemistry double major who is today a veterinarian, was the inspiration behind the horse project. One day in Lipsett’s lab, she was doing some preliminary research on the Internet and came across a story about a deaf colt.

“Because she’s a horse person and a vet person, she said, ‘maybe we can pursue this,’” said Lipsett. “Well it turns out the family that owned that particular horse also had the parents and siblings in this pedigree of Spanish Mustangs. Not just one offspring was deaf. There were two deaf offspring that came from the same stallion and two different mares. So that started the project.”

Working with larger mammals has its benefits, Lipsett says. For one, large mammals, as opposed to mice and rats, live longer. If, during transitional research, researchers are completing a treatment study, this allows scientists to study long-term implications. It’s humane: Lipsett uses hair plucked from the horse’s mane. It’s convenient: she uses her own horse and horses from the SPCA as experimental controls. She is currently working with a family from Virginia who owned deaf horses with white coats and blue eyes—the phenotype that studies have shown to correlate with deafness in other animals, like the Siberian Husky.

This knowledge helped Lipsett’s lab narrow down their focus to a candidate gene called the KIT gene.

Prof. Lipsett in the lab

“In [other cases of mammals] that had deafness, white pigmentation, and blue eyes, it has come down to the KIT gene,” said Lipsett. “That particular gene is complex, but that’s not the only one that has been found—there are 5 or 6 genes that we identified as candidate genes. And our job is to methodically go through, sequencing those genes, to see if we can find the mutation.”

The process involves examining the gene’s exons, the segments of the DNA that contain the coding information, or set of instructions, that translate to the protein of interest, for example.

Benjamin Gantz ’16 was responsible for examining exon-21 in the KIT gene. They ran into several issues with designing primers, which is the first step to sequencing a gene.

“Ben got to a point where we understood where the problem was, and by the time he graduated we a had a good understanding of what to do next,” said Lipsett.

“Ben would say, ‘wow, I’m doing real science,’ and I’d say, ‘You've been doing real science the whole time!’ Because you need to think outside the box. There’s no canned answer.”

“Many students have worked on this project before me. It was amazing to be able to pick up where they left off and continue this research,” echoed Gantz. “In independent research labs like Dr. Lipsett's, you are determining the answers to questions that no one on the planet knows. Other scientists may use our research to further their own understanding or study, but our findings will be a starting point for them.”

Over the years, several students have worked on pieces of the project that have been published, like Kaytie Innamorati ’14, who is currently conducting research on Alzheimer’s Disease as a Ph.D. candidate at Drexel University. She is listed as a co-author on the abstract, “Determining the genetic basis of equine deafness via candidate gene studies.” Also, Alecia Achimovich ’16, a Ph.D. candidate at The University of Virginia, is a co-author with Kaytie on a recent abstract.

Prof. Koren Lipsett working in the lab

Today, Lipsett says the research is at the point where they have narrowed down which genes to focus on, and now it’s about consolidating the data order to identify a putative gene mutation. As with the blind cat study, the next step will be to explore the mechanism of pathology that will help define how the gene mutation translated to disease symptoms like blindness or deafness.

“We care about this because we can directly correlate it to human studies,” said Lipsett. “The more we understand the gene function in a mammal model, the more likely we can understand the equivalent function in humans. Then, we can apply that knowledge to characterize and potentially treat the genetic disorder.”

A biological career pathway

Lipsett didn’t start working with DNA until she came to Gettysburg. But looking at her journey, the path to that research seemed inevitable.

“I loved biochemistry in college,” she said. “I didn’t do genomics, I did protein studies. It’s related to the biological system, and that’s what’s exciting to me. My work evolved slowly, as in any research career. You don’t necessarily stay in the same track, but your research takes you down new tracks and lets you solve cool new problems.”

Prof. Koren LipsettDuring Lipsett’s postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University, she studied metabolic pathways at the genomic level and how specific genes, and the gene products, participate in a given biological pathway. She and her colleagues worked on identifying the gene corresponding to an enzyme involved in the aflatoxin biosynthetic pathway in fungus, furthering their understanding of the pathways in natural product biosynthesis. For example, aflatoxins are a family of carcinogenic toxins that are produced by fungi and can be found contaminating grain and peanuts (peanut butter). Aflatoxin can cause liver cancer. In the United States, we screen our crops for the contaminant, but other countries might not.

“My interest is studying these pathways,” she said. Because nature produces antifungal, anticancer and antibacterial agents, she asks questions like, What structural features of the molecule inhibit growth, and How can we modify and make a better antifungal [agent]?

“By applying knowledge gained from understanding the biosynthetic pathway, and the genes involved in that pathway, one can learn from nature and perhaps make the next new therapeutic drug based on that knowledge,” she said. “Learning from nature is really cool!”

Lipsett describes herself as “jumping” into mitochondrial DNA. Her mitochondrial genomic studies began with looking at genomic variations in mitochondrial DNA, some of which have been identified as causing mitochondrial myopathies.

Plucking Patent

This past January, Lipsett received some exciting news: A letter notifying her that she was issued a United States patent for the “Isolation and Characterization of a Single Mitochondron.”

Lipsett explained that one characteristic of mitochondria is that it contains multiple copies of the mitochondrial genome, and each cell can contain many mitochondria.

“If there is a mutation in one copy of the genome, and there are 100 copies total, the other 99 copies are fine,” she said. “So why should one copy interfere with the cell?” Her questions led to studies to learn more about how that one modified copy becomes the predominant version, and therefore, causative of mitochondrial disease symptoms.

She and her colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology designed a technique using what is described as “optical tweezers” that can trap and then isolate a single mitochodrion using an infrared laser.

Lipsett decided to apply for the patent after speaking with one of her former research students.

“Christian Bauer ’97, a biochemistry and molecular biology major, went to get his master’s in forensic science,” said Lipsett. Bauer continued his education and became a patent attorney. “He was visiting to speak with students for a career panel, and he said, ‘apply for a patent—that’s intellectual property!’”

Lipsett switched gears and began examining nuclear—as opposed to the mitochondrial—genomic variations. During a sabbatical at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, her research path transitioned to examining pedigrees of large mammals in order to identify the gene responsible for a specific disease.

“I like learning new tools for finding that needle in the haystack, that Eureka moment,” she said. “We haven’t found it yet in the deafness project, but we’ve gathered enough information from this deaf horse study to think it’s more complex than just one gene.”

Comment on Creationist Wisdom #783: Eyes Disprove Evolution by Eric Lipps
The problem for such people is that they can't, or won't, get past the notion that it's either the eye as we know it today or nothing. But we have known instances of more primitive structures which serve somewhat the same purpose as an eye. The "pits" of a pit viper, for example, are lined with photoreceptors sensitive to infrared radiation; these help the snakes spot their warm-blooded prey at night or in shadow. They're not full-formed "eyes," but clearly represent a step in that direction. And once again there's the question: if it's so easy to disprove evolution that undereducated laymen can do it in an instant, why didn't the theory flop immediately in the nineteenth century, when belief in Genesis was still widespread among credible scientists?
          Stay Cool

Summer officially started this week. Has anyone checked with Mother Nature? Are we sure she got the memo? Seriously, sometimes I can’t tell where we are with the weather. I don’t really mind the hot weather at all, as long as I can do things like jump in a river, or ride my bike. The warmer days had me thinking about an interesting topic that spans a bit more than just electricity and magnetism, but I thought it might be interesting anyway. How do we cool things down?

I’ve always been fascinated by this actually. Even as a child, I could understand, heating things up was easy. Fire is easy. Warming myself up in winter with a heavier jacket was easy. Cooling things down is always trickier, and there are several ways to do it. To get a better understanding of how we cool things down, we have to start at the very basics. What is temperature? Actually, what we call temperature is a measure of motion, specifically of atoms and particles. They’re not moving from A to B, but rather, vibrating in place, or in the case of gases, moving around haphazardly. The faster they move, the higher the temperature of the substance. When all motion stops, the substance if brutally cold. So cold, in fact, that it has a special name: absolute zero. Absolute zero is approximately -273.15 Celsius or -459.67 Fahrenheit. We even have a temperature scale that starts at absolute zero, called the Kelvin scale. 0 Kelvin is absolute zero. The motion of the atoms or particles also gives off something called black body radiation. This is simply thermal-spectrum electromagnetic radiation. As such, it’s part of the electromagnetic spectrum I wrote about some time ago. This is how infrared cameras work as well as any thermal imaging camera.

With that background in place, it’ll make more sense when I explain certain cooling methods we commonly use. One of the most efficient and effective cooling methods is gas decompression. This is how nearly all refrigerators, air conditioners and heat pumps work. In any gas, the molecules comprising the gas are spaced pretty far apart. When you compress them into a tinier volume of space, the gas will increase in temperature. Is this because the particles are now hitting each other more often and creating more frictional heating? It would be nice if that’s how it worked, but it’s actually a bit more complicated than that. The simplest way to understand heating of compressed gas is to understand conservation of energy. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Compressing a gas requires some amount of energy, and that energy has to go somewhere. It ends up going into the gas causing the particles to move faster, which we observe as heat. From a physical standpoint, the gas particles are interacting with the boundaries of their space more frequently as the space containing them shrinks. The most scientifically accurate explanation of the temperature increase is that by reducing the available volume of space, you’re increasing your theoretical knowledge of where each particle is. Instead of being somewhere in a huge volume of space, each particle is now in some much smaller volume. You’re decreasing the entropy of the gas. That knowledge doesn’t come free though. The particles essentially say, “ok, we’ll let you know more about where we are, but in turn we’re going to let you know less about our speeds, because we’re going to move faster.”

Whew…all of that. Are you still with me? Hadley, you haven’t mentioned a single thing about cooling yet! Just heating! Yes, but now all the pieces are available. When we compress a gas, it heats up for the reasons stated above, but we can do something with that heat. We don’t have to let the gas just stay hot. This is what refrigerators do. Once they compress a gas, they pass it through some type of heat sink. This is a device that allows the heat of the gas/fluid inside to dissipate as quickly as possible to the ambient environment. Once this happens, we have a roughly room temperature compressed gas. If we allow the gas to decompress, its temperature will fall…to below room temperature. The particles are now saying, “ok, you’re increasing our volume, and this means you’ll know less about where we are. So to compensate, we’ll slow down a bit so you can at least know how fast we’re going.” Obviously the trick in any of these refrigeration systems is being able to compress the gas a lot as well as being able to efficiently remove the heat from the compressed gas.

This process will work for any gas, including air. In fact, I encounter this phenomenon every time I air down the tires on my bike. The tires are filled with ordinary air, compressed to between 90 and 110 PSI. When initially pressurized, they do heat up, but over time, they cool to ambient temperature. When I rapidly release the pressure, the valve becomes noticeably cold to the touch. In most refrigeration, we don’t use air, we use some kind of refrigerant, like Freon. Freon is the trademark name for any number of different gasses used as refrigerants known as halocarbons. You’ve probably heard of at least some of these by their scientific name, chlorofluorocarbons (abbreviated CFCs). These are the same CFCs that scientists discovered were causing ozone depletion in the 1980s and 1990s, so they aren’t in widespread use anymore. All refrigerants are just special types of gas that have properties that are beneficial to what we’ll be doing with them.

The important thing to remember is that if you’re unable to remove the heat from the compressed gas, and you let it decompress, all it will do is decrease back to roughly room temperature where it started. So it won’t be cool the way we want it. If you want the gas to be very cold, you have to make its starting temperature less. There is actually no limit to this (beyond absolute zero) and this is how we create extremely cold substances like liquid nitrogen. In fact, you can sometimes create bits of dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) by releasing a fire extinguisher into a burlap sack. The CO2 in the fire extinguisher is compressed, and if it’s been sitting long enough, it’s also at room temperature. Releasing the pressure causes a large decrease in temperature. So large that the gas actually solidifies into its solid state.

Hopefully this was an interesting slight deviation from my usual topics of electromagentism.

Study: Bats May Mistake Wind Turbines For Trees
An unprecedented number of bats are being killed by wind turbine blades. A new report has found bats may be mistaking wind turbines for trees. Bats are often looking for a place to roost when the moon is bright and winds are low. That’s when the conditions can be the deadliest for bats flying near wind turbines. U.S. Geological Survey researchers used infrared video to track movements at a wind farm. They saw more bats approaching the turbines when the blades were moving slower than when they were moving faster. Paul Cryan is the lead researcher for the study. He says bats can detect trees by the wind currents around them. He says, “Wind turbines and trees might feel the same from an air flow perspective.” Researchers in Canada and the U.S. found that when they only let the turbines spin on windier days, the bat deaths dropped by 50 percent.           Science on the SPOT: Up all Night with SOFIA, NASA's Flying Observatory

Seen from the exterior with its rear canopy closed, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) aircraft looks much like a typical jumbo jet you might see at any airport– perhaps even reminiscent of another well-known, heavily modified Boeing 747, Air Force One.

"SOFIA has a lot of characteristics ...

A peculiar galaxy appears at redshift 11: properties of a moderate-redshift interloper
First Author: Hayes, Matthew
Instruments: XSHOOTER
ProgramIDs: 087.A-0118
BibCode: 2012MNRAS.425L..19H

In 2011 Laporte et al. reported a very high redshift galaxy candidate: a lensed J-band dropout (A2667-J1). J1 has a photometric redshift of z= 9.6-12, the probability density function for which permits no low- or intermediate-z solution. We here report new spectroscopic observations of this galaxy with Very Large Telescope/X-Shooter, which show clear [O III] λ5007 Å, Lyα, Hα and Hβ emission and place the galaxy firmly at z= 2.082. The oxygen lines contribute only ˜25 per cent to the H-band flux and do not significantly affect the dropout selection of J1. After correcting the broad-band fluxes for line emission, we identify two roughly equally plausible natures for A2667-J1: it is either a young heavily reddened starburst or a maximally old system with a very pronounced 4000-Å break, upon which a minor secondary burst of star formation is superimposed. Fits show that to make a 3σ detection of this object in the B band (V band), imaging of depth AB = 30.2 (29.5) would be required - despite the relatively bright near-infrared (NIR) magnitude, we would need optical data of equivalent depth to the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to rule out the mid-z solution on purely photometric grounds. Assuming that this stellar population can be scaled to the NIR magnitudes of recent Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) IR-selected galaxies, we conclude that unfeasibly deep optical data (reaching AB ˜ 32) would be required for the same level of security. There is a population of galaxies at z≈ 2 with continuum colours alone that mimic those of our z= 7-12 candidates. Vacuum wavelengths are quoted.
Fine structure of the age-chromospheric activity relation in solar-type stars. I. The Ca II infrared triplet: Absolute flux calibration
First Author: Lorenzo-Oliveira, D.
Instruments: FEROS
ProgramIDs: .
BibCode: 2016A&A...595A..11L

Context. Strong spectral lines are useful indicators of stellar chromospheric activity. They are physically linked to the convection efficiency, differential rotation, and angular momentum evolution and are a potential indicator of age. However, for ages 〉 2 Gyr, the age-activity relationship remains poorly constrained thus hampering its full application.
Aims: The Ca II infrared triplet (IRT lines, λλ 8498, 8542, and 8662) has been poorly studied compared to classical chromospheric indicators. We report in this paper absolute chromospheric fluxes in the three Ca II IRT lines, based on a new calibration tied to up-to-date model atmospheres.
Methods: We obtain the Ca II IRT absolute fluxes for 113 FGK stars from high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and high-resolution spectra covering an extensive domain of chromospheric activity levels. We perform an absolute continuum flux calibration for the Ca II IRT lines anchored in atmospheric models calculated as an explicit function of effective temperatures (Teff), metallicity ([Fe/H]), and gravities (log g) avoiding the degeneracy usually present in photometric continuum calibrations based solely on color indices.
Results: The internal uncertainties achieved for continuum absolute flux calculations are ≈2% of the solar chromospheric flux, one order of magnitude lower than for photometric calibrations. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we gauge the impact of observational errors on the final chromospheric fluxes due to the absolute continuum flux calibration and find that Teffuncertainties are properly mitigated by the photospheric correction leaving [Fe/H] as the dominating factor in the chromospheric flux uncertainty.
Conclusions: Across the FGK spectral types, the Ca II IRT lines are sensitive to chromospheric activity. The reduced internal uncertainties reported here enable us to build a new chromospheric absolute flux scale and explore the age-activity relation from the active regime down to very low activity levels and a wide range of Teff, mass, [Fe/H], and age.Based on spectroscopic observations collected at the Observatório do Pico dos Dias (OPD), operated by the Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica, CNPq, Brazil, and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), within the ON/ESO and ON/IAG agreements, under FAPESP project No. 1998/10138-8.Full Table 1 is only available at the CDS via anonymous ftp to http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (http://130.79.128.5) or via http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/qcat?J/A+A/595/A11

New Product: Astronomik ProPlanet 642 BP

The Astronomik ProPlanet 642 BP is the lastest addition to the family of Astromik ProPlanet IR-pass filters. The filter thrills because of it´s wide range of applikations for daylight IR-Photography, high-resolution lunar and planetary imaging and for taking beautifull and deep images of H-alpha regions when used for Astrophotography.

"BP" are short for "Bandpass": The filter gives you a 200nm spectral window from 642nm to 842nm. Contrary to the other two ProPlanet filters it blocks the longer infrared. Together with the Astronmik ProPlanet 742 and the ProPlanet 807 you can now have three choices to match your needs when imaging in the IR. The Astronomik ProPlanet 642 BP will be the right choice for the best image quite often!

          Nisi NANO4565IRND12G (NANO-4565-IRND-12-G) 4 x 5.65 IRND 1.2 Graduated Neutral Density Filter 186.21 +VAT
The camera is different from the human eye. The dynamic range of the human eye is quite wide, allowing us to easily see detail in bright and dim areas simultaneously. While modern cameras have made great advances in range, they are still not able to match what we can see with our own eyes. They have trouble holding detail in scenes with a wide range of tones. To compensate for this, we can use ND Grads to selectively darken an area of the frame. NiSis IRND Grad uses the same patented infrared damping coating technology as the IRND filters. It absorbs the light from the IR spectrum, up to 1200 nm, effectively eliminating IR light pollution from reaching your sensor. This ensures that you are able to accurately and uniformly capture the full spectrum of visible light.
          Honeywell Wifi Thermostat wrong voltage?
Earlier this spring I bought a new Honeywell wifi thermostat to replace the 5-2 Honeywell thermostat we had for 12 years that quit on us. It seemed to function fine for the first couple of months of a very cool spring (Northern VA) with a day of heat and another day of cold, etc. Now that the heat has arrived for good I think something is wrong and the previous couple of months the system appeared ok because the house is well insulated and the temps were staying away from extremes. A couple of days ago I noticed that it was REALLY getting cold in certain portions of the house that don't have a lot of circulation. I also noticed the AC was running a LOT, like hours on end. i started taking a look at stuff and noticed that the thermostat was showing 77 degrees indoors even though I had it set for 74 on a program most of the day except the middle when we are out and it goes to a 76 setting. I put a digital air thermometer next to the thermostat and it showed 74.3. I put an infrared thermometer on the metal floor registers and they show low 60's. After some reading on the net I discovered some feel they have calibration issues and they need to change the offset. I changed it to 3 degrees (wasn't pleased, I feel the thermostat should be more accurate than that) and it seemed to be in line with the other thermometer for the last couple of days. However, the system is still running almost constantly and still running even when the thermostat shows the room as the set temperature. Here is a pic of this situation: Image: https://photos-5.dropbox.com/t/2/AAD6EDoqIBblW9kpm6a5Q-st8k3ocyR594lg59ducVVSVw/12/96324003/jpeg/32x32/1/_/1/2/2017-07-01%2018.24.11.jpg/EKfZ3UoY5Y8DIAIoAigE/7f3z16OHjqX-NChhqHwNQ0tTPuQqjIeOnBsxQo1W5o8?size=2048x1536&size_mode=3 I called Honeywell today and told them all above. The person on the phone said they stand behind the thermostat calibration and it might be a voltage problem. While on the phone I got out a meter and they had me pull the front off the thermostat and check the voltage between the R and G pins. I checked by touching the solder points on the outside of the wires so I didnt' have to pull them out. I got 3.0v. They said that was the problem and that the thermostat requires 24v and the thermostat is probably reading incorrectly because of that. I read up on the 24v issue and I see it does need 24 and I only have 3. That said, I think my system is new enough tech (2005) to be supplying the 24v. So have I wired something wrong? Even if the voltage caused the incorrect temp reading, would that cause it to continue...

Gabro: Regarding "fourth CO2 molecule out of 10,000 dry air molecules": Are you claiming CO2 is so greatly a trace gas that the increase from 280 to 405-410 PPMV doesn't matter? How is this reconciled with arguments that CO2 is so powerful that its infrared spectral effect was already saturated when it was at 280 PPMV so increase above that does not matter?
The map of the Milky Way Galaxy
The map of the Milky Way Galaxy

Like early explorers mapping the continents of our globe, astronomers are busy charting the spiral structure of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Using infrared images from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms.

This annotated artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo. The galaxy's two major arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) can be seen attached to the ends of a thick central bar, while the two now-demoted minor arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are less distinct and located between the major arms. The major arms consist of the highest densities of both young and old stars; the minor arms are primarily filled with gas and pockets of star-forming activity.

The artist's concept also includes a new spiral arm, called the "Far-3 kiloparsec arm," discovered via a radio-telescope survey of gas in the Milky Way. This arm is shorter than the two major arms and lies along the bar of the galaxy.

Our Sun lies near a small, partial arm called the Orion Arm, or Orion Spur, located between the Sagittarius and Perseus arms.

Jupiter seen by Juno spacecraft in Near Infrared
Jupiter seen by Juno spacecraft in Near Infrared

This composite infrared image of Jupiter reveals haze particles over a range of altitudes, as seen in reflected sunlight. It was taken using the Gemini North Telescope's Near-InfraRed Imager (NIRI) on May 18, 2017, in collaboration with the investigation of Jupiter by NASA's Juno mission. Juno completed its sixth close approach to Jupiter a few hours after this observation.

The multiple filters corresponding to each color used in the image cover wavelengths between 1.69 microns and 2.275 microns. Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) appears as the brightest (white) region at these wavelengths, which are primarily sensitive to high-altitude clouds and hazes near and above the top of Jupiter's convective region.

The GRS is one of the highest-altitude features in Jupiter's atmosphere. Narrow spiral streaks that appear to lead into it or out of it from surrounding regions probably represent atmospheric features being stretched by the intense winds within the GRS, such as the hook-like structure on its western edge (left side). Some are being swept off its eastern edge (right side) and into an extensive wave-like flow pattern, and there is even a trace of flow from its northern edge.

Other features near the GRS include the dark block and dark oval to the south and the north of the eastern flow pattern, respectively, indicating a lower density of cloud and haze particles in those locations. Both are long-lived cyclonic circulations, rotating clockwise -- in the opposite direction as the counterclockwise rotation of the GRS.

A prominent wave pattern is evident north of the equator, along with two bright ovals, which are anticyclones that appeared in January 2017. Both the wave pattern and the ovals may be associated with an impressive upsurge in stormy activity that has been observed in these latitudes this year. Another bright anticyclonic oval is seen further north. The Juno spacecraft may pass over these ovals, as well as the Great Red Spot, during its close approach to Jupiter on July 10, 2017, Pacific Time (July 11, Universal Time).

High hazes are evident over both polar regions with much spatial structure not previously been seen quite so clearly in ground-based images

The filters used for observations combined into this image admit infrared light centered on the following infrared wavelengths (and presented here in these colors): 1.69 microns (blue), 2.045 microns (cyan), 2.169 microns (green), 2.124 microns (yellow), and 2.275 microns (red).

          Tackling Efficiency at Yestermorrow
by Kate Stephenson, Executive Director

When I give tours of the Yestermorrow campus, frequently I end up telling folks we have many components of a high performance building. But one of the challenges of working to renovate and retrofit an existing building (originally a hotel built in 1960) in phases over time is that often you don't get a chance to look at the larger picture of the building as a whole. Every year we continue to work our way through an extensive punch list of deferred maintenance and improvements with the ultimate goal of improving the student experience here at Yestermorrow. But it's been a few years since we took a step back to look at the bigger picture.

Luckily, we have some amazing expertise right here in the Yestermorrow family. In September we had a visit from Donna Leban, a new member of the Yestermorrow faculty and a local lighting designer focused on energy efficiency in lighting. Through Efficiency Vermont's RELIGHT program which provides financial support to businesses interested in lighting retrofits, we were able to hire Donna to do a comprehensive lighting audit of Yestermorrow's main building and recommend potential upgrades including LEDs and controls.

Brad and Sayer set up the blower door
The next step was to bring in Brad Cook from Building Performance Services LLC in Waitsfield. Brad has been a long time friend of Yestermorrow, going back to when he was on staff at the school in the 1980s. He is BPI-certified to conduct energy audits and offered to donate a full audit of Yestermorrow's main building. A couple weeks ago he came by with his blower doors, infrared camera, combustion testing equipment to go through the whole building. Overall, we actually did better on the blower door test than we expected, coming out at 5,639 cfm-50 (cubic feet per minute at 50 Pascals). For an 10,000 square foot building that is decent for air tightness. However, we certainly found areas of potential improvement- failed windows, cracks around rough openings and in corners of sheetrock, and gaps in insulation between the foundation wall and first floor. Over the next couple of weeks we will work with Brad to put together a list of recommendations to improve the building envelope, and we're using a Kill-a-Watt meter to look at energy usage of specific appliances around the school.

Reviewing the blower door results via two different wifi enabled devices
Meanwhile we have also been looking at the bigger picture of the overall environmental impact of the organization. This summer we worked with a summer intern from the Community College of Vermont, Lisa Thacker, to update our Environmental Impact Report. We had published the first version of this report in 2011 with help from instructor Jim Newman of Linnean Solutions. Lisa and our staff went through the extensive process of reviewing data from 2012-2013 to update the metrics identified in the original report- including electricity, propane and water usage as well as local purchasing and occupancy. We will have the updated report up on our website by the end of the month.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to look at the efficiency of the campus and ways to reduce our footprint!

Near-infrared light-triggered drug release from a multiple lipid carrier complex using an all-in-one strategy.

Near-infrared light-triggered drug release from a multiple lipid carrier complex using an all-in-one strategy.

    J Control Release. 2017 Jun 27;:

    Authors: Li H, Yang X, Zhou Z, Wang K, Li C, Qiao H, Oupicky D, Sun M

    Abstract
The present study reports a drug delivery system comprising nanostructured lipid carrier (NLCs) within liposomes (Lip-NLCs). This multiple lipid carrier complex features laser-triggered responsive drug release. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs can be loaded into the same formulation by applying an all-in-one strategy. We hypothesized that if we loaded the hydrophobic near-infrared (NIR) dye IR780 into the liposome phospholipid bilayer, the bilayer would be disrupted by laser irradiation so that drug release would be triggered remotely at the tumor site. We used in vitro and in vivo methods to verify that laser irradiation facilitated controlled release of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs. The degree of drug release triggered by NIR laser light could be adjusted by varying the laser intensity and irradiation time. Following laser treatment, hydrophilic AMD3100 was released from the aqueous liposome chamber and then bound with CXCR4 receptors on the tumor cell surface to inhibit metastasis. NLCs carrying lipophilic IR780 were also released from the aqueous chamber of liposomes and taken up into tumor cells to enhance the photothermal therapeutic effect of IR780. More importantly, Lip-NLCs loaded with IR780 and AMD3100 (IR780-AMD-Lip-NLCs) exhibited enhanced anti-tumor and anti-metastasis effects. These results suggest that Lip-NLCs are a safe and simply prepared all-in-one platform for delivery of drugs with different solubilities. This system facilitates easily controlled release of cargoes to achieve multi-functional combined therapy.

Redox-sensitive and hyaluronic acid functionalized liposomes for cytoplasmic drug delivery to osteosarcoma in animal models.

Redox-sensitive and hyaluronic acid functionalized liposomes for cytoplasmic drug delivery to osteosarcoma in animal models.

    J Control Release. 2017 Jun 27;:

    Authors: Chi Y, Yin X, Sun K, Feng S, Liu J, Chen D, Guo C, Wu Z

    Abstract
This study aimed to develop redox-sensitive and CD44-targeted liposomes to improve chemotherapy of osteosarcoma. Cationic liposomes were prepared and stabilized with a novel detachable polyethylene glycol (PEG2000) conjugated with cholesterol through a bio-reducible disulfide linker (Chol-SS-mPEG). Hyaluronic acid (HA, MW 20-40kDa), a ligand to CD44, was non-covalently coated on the cationic liposomes. Doxorubicin (DOX) was actively loaded in the liposomes as a model drug. The roles of HA and Chol-SS-mPEG on intracellular drug delivery efficiency, and antitumor efficacy were studied. The structure of Chol-SS-mPEG was confirmed with Fourier-transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR). The liposomes, Chol-SS-mPEG/HA-L had a mean diameter of 165nm, zeta potential -28.9mV, and destabilized in reducing or acidic (pH5-6) conditions. In vitro release of DOX was well-controlled at physiological conditions, but a burst release of 60% was observed in the presence of 10mM glutathione (GSH), in contrast to non-redox sensitive liposomes (Chol-mPEG/HA-L and Chol-mPEG-L). MTT cell viability assay showed that the dual-functional Chol-SS-mPEG/HA-L with a drug loading of 15.0% (w/w) had significantly higher cytotoxicity to MG63 osteosarcoma cells compared with non-reduction sensitive or non-HA coated liposomes (p<0.01), consistent with the cellular uptake and intracellular trafficking studies using confocal microscopy and flow cytometry. Furthermore, the HA-coated GSH-responsive liposomes preferentially internalized to MG63 over human liver cells LO2. In rats, liposomes stabilized with either Chol-SS-mPEG or Chol-mPEG, with or without HA, increased the half-life of DOX by >10-fold. In a MG63 xenograft mouse model, Chol-SS-mPEG/HA-L showed the most effective tumor suppression with minimal uptake by the liver compared with other liposomes. All animals treated with liposomal formulations survived, in contrast to those free-DOX treated. In conclusion, the easily prepared Chol-SS-mPEG/HA-L was demonstrated as an excellent CD44-mediated intracellular delivery system capable of long-circulation and GSH-triggered cytoplasmic drug release. Further translational and multidisciplinary research is required to make it real clinical benefits to cancer patients.

               Infrared Escape (Games)

    Infrared Escape 1.0

    Device: iOS iPhone
    Category: Games
    Price: Free, Version: 1.0 (iTunes)

    Description:

EarthGames is proud to announce Infrared Escape, a game that combines frantic arcade fun with... learning about the greenhouse effect!? You have to try it to believe it!

You play the role of an infrared light beam, trying to make it out to space. Along the way you have to dodge pesky greenhouse gases by tapping left or right.

Each collision with a greenhouse gas causes your beam to lose some energy. If you keep grazing the gases, it’s game over.

Your journey through the air is divided into levels — each one an actual layer of the atmosphere. A fun fact about the planet is presented between levels.

Making it through the Earth’s atmosphere and into space is a great accomplishment! It means your ray has done its part to cool down the Earth and offset global warming.

The easiest mode is the pre-industrial past, so there aren’t as many greenhouse gases to dodge. The hardest difficulty corresponds with a much more polluted future. Light-speed reaction times will be needed to conquer this mode, since greenhouse gases are so tightly packed in the air.

Infrared Escape was designed and built by EarthGames alum Ben Peterson and Professor Dargan Frierson. Make sure to crank the volume on Dargan's pulsing electronic dance soundtrack!

              Understanding Radiant Heat Transfer
    Understanding Radiant Heat Transfer
Thermal radiation is electromagnetic radiation generated by the thermal motion of charged particles in matter. All matter with a temperature greater than absolute zero emits thermal radiation. When the temperature of the body is greater than absolute zero, interatomic collisions cause the kinetic energy of the atoms or molecules to change. This results in charge-acceleration and/or dipole oscillation which produces electromagnetic radiation, and the wide spectrum of radiation reflects the wide spectrum of energies and accelerations that occur even at a single temperature. Examples of thermal radiation include the visible light and infrared light emitted by an incandescent light bulb, the infrared radiation emitted by animals and detectable with an infrared camera, and the cosmic microwave background radiation. Thermal radiation is different from thermal convection and thermal conduction—a person near a raging bonfire feels radiant heating from the fire, even if the surrounding air is very cold. Sunlight is part of thermal radiation generated by the hot plasma of the Sun. The Earth also emits thermal radiation, but at a much lower intensity and different spectral distribution (infrared rather than visible) because it is cooler. The Earth’s absorption of solar radiation, followed by its outgoing thermal radiation are the two most important processes that determine the temperature and climate of the Earth. If a radiation-emitting object meets the physical characteristics of a black body in thermodynamic equilibrium, the radiation is called blackbody radiation. Planck’s law describes the spectrum of blackbody radiation, which depends only on the object’s temperature. Wien’s displacement law determines the most likely frequency of the emitted radiation, and the Stefan–Boltzmann law gives the radiant intensity.

              The weather on Jupiter
Infrared imaging reveals another fresh perspective on the solar system’s biggest planet.
Oxygen-Sensing Paint-On Bandage: Calibration of a Novel Approach in Tissue Perfusion Assessment
imageBackground: Knowledge of tissue oxygenation status is fundamental in the prevention of postoperative flap failure. Recently, the authors introduced a novel oxygen-sensing paint-on bandage that incorporated an oxygen-sensing porphyrin with a commercially available liquid bandage matrix. In this study, the authors extend validation of their oxygen-sensing bandage by comparing it to the use of near-infrared tissue oximetry in addition to Clark electrode measurements. Methods: The oxygen-sensing paint-on bandage was applied to the left hind limb in a rodent model. Simultaneously, a near-infrared imaging device and Clark electrode were attached to the right and left hind limbs, respectively. Tissue oxygenation was measured under normal, ischemic (aortic ligation), and reperfused conditions. Results: On average, the oxygen-sensing paint-on bandage measured a decrease in transdermal oxygenation from 85.2 mmHg to 64.1 mmHg upon aortic ligation. The oxygen-sensing dye restored at 81.2 mmHg after unclamping. Responses in both control groups demonstrated a similar trend. Physiologic changes from normal to ischemic and reperfused conditions were statistically significantly different in all three techniques (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The authors’ newly developed oxygen-sensing paint-on bandage exhibits a comparable trend in oxygenation recordings in a rat model similar to conventional oxygenation assessment techniques. This technique could potentially prove to be a valuable tool in the routine clinical management of flaps following free tissue transfer. Incorporating oxygen-sensing capabilities into a simple wound dressing material has the added benefit of providing both wound protection and constant wound oxygenation assessment.

Design and Simulation of an Antenna-Coupled Microbolometer at 30 THz
We propose a model of antenna-coupled microbolometer to be included in an array for receiving and detecting long wave infrared (LWIR) electromagnetic radiation. The antenna is joined to microstrip bandpass filters thus forming a single metal structure to define the operation frequency band. The antenna and microstrip filters are modeled in aluminum thin film. The microbolometer is modeled with superconducting niobium, all together on a silicon nitride membrane. The squared pixel structure is designed on a support frame of 20 m in size. Simulation results for this antenna exhibit a frequency range of operation from 27 to 35 THz and is configured for two arrays, one of and the other one of elements. The device has been simulated by means of the commercial electromagnetic software (HFSS), which is based on the finite elements method. The predicted values for the figures of merit of this microbolometer are as follows:  ns,  V/W, and = , respectively.

Comment on DUI pursuit starts in Fallbrook by Lee
@ Jay I agree with you. I feel the same about Law Enforcement's lack of using the latest and greatest technology to find lost folks. Remember the search for the old man and the little boy in January? http://villagenews.com/local/uncle-reports-body-5-year-old-nephew-found/ We are told we are THE greatest and most technologically-advanced nation on earth. We can shot with pinpoint accuracy somebody in Yemen all the way from Nevada. We have drones, heat-seeking technology, infrared and who-knows-what other kind of technology. (Remember, that's only the technology that you and I know about. Think what they really have!) And so when it comes to looking for lost loved ones, we use . . . Barney Fife, volunteers (NOT trained professionals) holding their Dunkin' Donuts coffee . . . and Waldo. Comforting, isn't it? The reason why this is so is because our police officers fear for their jobs. That's the real reason, let's not kid ourselves. It's about . . . money and job security, baby, and cushy retirement checks and all that good stuff. Money, my dear Jay, is more important than, HEAVEN FORBID the loss of your wife. Money -- good; lost wife -- who gives a [beep]. Like you say, shameful.

@RichardIII, There is nothing controversial about the effects of collision broadening. If we are having a "Failure to agree" it is because I did a poor job of explaining how things work. Forget my lousy explanation and look at the Robinson & Catling model. http://faculty.washington.edu/dcatling/Robinson2014_0.1bar_Tropopause.pdf The above NatGeo letter contains a 32 page explanation of their model which is based on "pressure-dependent infrared transparency". If you don't feel like wading through all that mathematical stuff please take a look at a Cliff's Notes explanation of collision broadening: http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~scidemos/QuantumRelativity/CollisionalBroadening/CollisionalBroadening.html I started building lasers in 1970 and have been rubbing shoulders with spectroscopists ever since so please forgive me for assuming the physics is widely accepted. I will try to be more precise in future.

Comment on Infrared Photography: Getting More Color From Your 720nm Filter by Bob Vishneski
Patrick, Glad to hear you are renewing your interest in IR. Welcome back! ;) While I've seen many wonderful IR pictures taken with the D70, the D70 is no match for the D800E. If you wanted to go a bit lighter, you could also use a D7200 with a 16-85mm or 16-80mm lens. I find this an ideal combination I like the DX bodies for IR, because I'm almost always carrying my D810 and my D7200 IR converted camera, and the D7200/16-85mm is a good bit lighter than a D800/810 FX camera with a 24-120mm lens. Let me know which configuration you select and send some links to your photos. Bob
