Some random and (very) stray observations
So many reality shows on TV. MTV Splitsvilla is great if you love to check out fights on the street between two random people. MTV Roadies is great if you are an adult but your brain is still 8 years old. If you are into dance and you get kicks by watching people dance in outrageous costumes, then I suggest you don’t sleep for more than 3 hours a day because there are reality dance shows all the time. There is something called In Your Fest. Do check it out. It is extreme crap. Next thing, cookery shows on music channels. Presenting VJ Juhi’s culinary delights on Channel V’s Red Hot Chilli Peppers every Saturday at 11.30 a.m. By the time it boils, you check out this cool track – The latest bollywood movie song played for the ten thousandth time. Launchpad is the only saving grace right now, but I dread the day when Launchpad will have to hunt for bands. Good bands take years to develop, and a launchpad every year will mean bad bands and crap music that will be polished and decorated for television.

Elections, the biggest reality show, are hitting the house this month. Channel V is running a campaign called “Vote ya Vaat”. The idea is simple, you vote or else you will be in a very bad shape because this very cruel, evil government will be elected and you will be persecuted and left deformed and malfunctioning beyond any hope of repair. There was a time when the campaigns would go “VOTE FOR ME” and now they take the easy way out and just about everyone says “GO VOTE”. Politicians come on Channel V – self proclaimed youth icons – and ask you to vote. I suspect they cut the part where they say “For Me” and just show the first part where they say “Vote”. Times of India – that great epitome of freedom, justice and equality – have gotten into the act with some Lead India type campaign. I have made up my mind. I will vote. Hence, we will get a clean, honest and efficient government this time. Obviously. Don’t vote for change, and don’t vote for an upset, just go and vote.

My favourite sporting nation has always been Argentina, thanks to Maradona and Sabatini. Now, Argentina lost to Bolivia 1-6 on April fool’s Day. It was soccer (not tennis) but then besides the inauspicious day (any astrologer would agree), I feel it was the altitude that got to the Argentineans. Playing in La Paz is no joke, and although Bolivia is ranked 50 places below Argentina in the FIFA rankings, they are the number one team when you play in La Paz. Teach the Bolivians to hold a bat, and they will give the Indian team a run for their money in cricket atop La Paz.

Maneka Gandhi has been in the news lately, thanks to Varun Gandhi and Mayawati. I used to get moved by the tales of cruelty towards animals narrated by Maneka Gandhi on TV in the series called “Heads and Tails”. It was touching, but it did not change my life (or my non-veg diet) and I did not fall in love with animals. At home, we never had pets when I was small. Maybe that’s why I was and I still am, indifferent to the two pets we have right now – a dog and a cat. My sis is into pets big time and hence the pets exist. The cat is no problem. We have had a pet cat for quite some time now. When one cat would die, my sister would get another. Almost like recycling. Cats don’t bark. Dogs do. And the one pet dog we have, does bark loud and for no reason. That is one reason I am not very appreciative of the pet dog. For some reason, he starts howling and screaming in the middle of nothing. It’s not like he has seen a stranger or something unfamiliar. Maybe it’s his innate desire to get some attention in this world where everyone is so focussed on avoiding pink slips amidst the economic meltdown. But I don’t get it. Why does the dog make dumb, loud, crazy noises when everything else around is still? One more reason the cat scores is the fact that she does not come near you sniffing your feet in anticipation of an egg coming out of your toes any moment. The dog does. Now I love my pet dog as long as he stays away from me. I have this ‘you live and let me live’ policy. It can be also interpreted as a ‘you leave me alone and I leave you alone’ policy. The dog does not get it.

And yeah, the good old lady Madonna has been stopped from adopting another baby from Malawi. I don’t think she is doing the right thing by adopting a second baby from the same country. Just for kicks, she should be asked to adopt from some other country. There is Djibouti, Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Lesotho and many countries to choose from. Madonna is a funny one. If you are a young woman, Madonna will smooch you. If you are older, she probably wants you as a nanny. If you are a child, Madonna will adopt you. And if you are a guy, she might marry you. Okay, if you are a young guy, she might be looking at just a brief fling. But still wherever you go, Madonna may get you. She always is in the papers or somewhere near you. Omnipresent, I say.

Remember Jack and the beanstalk? If you ever make a movie on the story, remember to cast Dev Patel as the beanstalk. By the way, the beanstalk is dating the 4th sexiest woman in the world. Wow! Imagine the fate of Frieda Pinto’s classmates at St. Xavier’s. I’m sure some of them were thinking of Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie when the 4th sexiest woman in the world was sitting next to them in class. The most important lesson from it all – never ignore any girls in your vicinity, you never know when they might climb up on the sexy rating scale (whatever that is!)

Minimal impact by antenatal subpatent P. falciparum infections on delivery outcomes in Malawian women: a cohort study.

Abstract
Antenatal malaria screening with a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and treatment only of RDT-positive women may potentially prevent low birthweight resulting from malaria. The consequences of subpatent antenatal infections below the detection limit of RDTs are incompletely understood. In Malawi, pregnant women of any gravidity were tested at each antenatal visit for P. falciparum using RDT and PCR and followed until delivery. Associations between antenatal infections and delivery outcomes were assessed with Poisson regression or ANOVA. Compared to women with no detected antenatal P. falciparum infections, women with RDT-positive infections delivered babies with lower mean birthweights: 2960 vs 2867 grams[g] (mean difference[MD]: -93g; 95% confidence interval[CI]: -27,-159; p=0.006); this was not observed among women with only subpatent infections (mean: 3013g; MD: +54; 95% CI: -33,+140; p=0.2268). These differences were apparent early in pregnancy: At second trimester enrollment, compared to uninfected women, RDT-positive women delivered babies with lower mean birthweight (MD: -94g; 95% CI: -31,-156; p=0.003), but women with subpatent infections did not (MD: +36g; 95% CI: -49,+122; p=0.409). Subpatent antenatal P. falciparum infections were not associated with adverse delivery outcomes. The association of patent infections at enrollment with low birthweight suggests the importance of early-pregnancy P. falciparum prevention.

          BUSINESS AND INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
FRANCHISING OF RESULTS Arumanis
Currently there are many food stalls that sell snacks from different parts of the region of Indonesia. However, there are only one or two snacks that are difficult to find, including Arumanis.

Foods made from raw sugar which is often called cotton sugar is only there in a celebration or a festive night market. Difficulty finding Arumanis on ordinary days Arumanis Rainbow deem this as a business opportunity.

Arumanis foods are short-lived. Not because of stale, but the quality of cotton would be reduced if allowed to Arumanis exposed to the wind. Therefore Arumanis Rainbow pack their products in an airtight container. This Arumanis can stand up to a month in air-conditioned room, the word Prana Mangun W., founder of the Rainbow franchise Arumanis.

Rainbow franchise owner Arumanis others, Erika Hayu Puspita, says that products using safe ingredients, including coloring and taste. Special taste, we use the materials for ice cream.

Although founded in 2001, franchised new Arumanis slide in March 2010. Total outlets Arumanis management is currently managed as many as 19 Rainbow stores, spread out in Bogor, Jakarta, and Cibubur. However, while this location is still held his own in the Greater Jakarta area.

In addition to the region, currently has franchises spread across Lampung, Surabaya, and Medan. While the franchise in Bandung in the licensing process.

Arumanis Rainbow offers a profit sharing scheme. The calculation for the results of the negotiations depends on both parties. However, Prana said, typically the percentage of profit sharing with the owner or franchisee locations approximately 25%.

Prospective franchisees can find strategic locations to place his own booth, such as in shopping centers, schools, tourist attractions, and food stores. We will help the process of licensing, said the Heart.

Prospective franchisee to provide enough money to invest USD 20 million. This includes the procurement of capital Arumanis maker, four-booth displays, packaging tubes of small, medium, and large for Arumanis, initial raw materials, support equipment, production training, employee uniforms, as well as software sales.

With one machine, franchisees can sell Arumanis more than one booth. More booth, behind the calculation of capital will also be faster. Although the initial package was only given four booth displays, the franchisee may request additional. One booth USD 1 million, said the Heart. Franchise or royalty fees every year quotes.

Arumanis is sold in three sizes. Arumanis in a small tube for Rp 7500, the tube was USD 9000, and a large tube of Rp 11,000. There are five flavors available are original, bubble gum, orange, clouds, taste wine, and leaves.

Chairman of the Steering Board of Franchising and Licensing Indonesia Amir Karamoy said, the prospects for this franchise is good because this product kids love and adults. Especially if there are attractions making so that children are more interested. In addition, franchisees maintain absolute cleanliness considering its market is children.

RUPIAH roll of the fold ANEKA TEXTILE FABRIC
Raw materials business has always been a fairly profitable business fields. Position as an intermediary between sellers of raw materials by producers of materials so this was as a meeting point both sides producers in upstream and downstream sectors. This also applies to textile fabrics business players.

Plain fabric to target business people engaged in the garment and fashion industry. Although located in the middle, does not mean the money that rotates a half-half.

Bagyo Sotopo, Marketing Manager of PT Kusuma Clothing Mekarjaya (KSM) in Sleman, Yogyakarta, admitted could rake in revenue of USD 8 billion per month. In that period, KSM can produce a variety of fabrics up to 2 million meters.

Actually, this figure is lower than last year's turnover. Bagyo mention expensive fabric yarn prices as the cause. Yarn prices rose 25% this year. He gave an example, the price of rayon yarn types which last year was USD 5.2 million per bale, now a USD 5.8 million. In fact, CBO does not just sell the cloth, but the processing threads to be woven.

Although the yarn price rise, claims can not participate Bagyo increase the selling price of different fabrics. Men 52 years of consumer rate KSM, including batik crafters, will not be able to absorb it if the price is increased.

Companies that stood since 1989 was made of five types of cloth that is Rayon, Cotton, Tetoron, Tetoron Rayon (TR), and Tetoron Cotton (TC). Each type of fabric is divided again in different variants. KSM product prices within the range of Rp 3,000 to Rp 10,500 per meter.

Bagyo market the fabric to Solo, Pekalongan, Malang, Surabaya, Bandung and Tangerang. Buyers from Tangerang exporting our products to the Middle East.

Other fabric businessperson is Ayin. German cloth business owners in Pekalongan was plunged into the business fabric since 1995. He sold the cotton and silk fabrics. For cotton, he used to take it from Solo and Yogyakarta.

As for the silk, he picked up from importers who bring it from China. Because China's famous silk good quality.

Ayin cotton price of Rp 5,000 to Rp 10,000 per yard. While the price of silk USD 10,000 to USD 50,000.

There are 50 regular customers who are spread in Pekalongan Ayin, Pemalang, Tegal, Cirebon, Bandung, and Jakarta. There are also clients in Bali, Jambi, Palangkaraya, and Makassar.

Before Lebaran, its sales could be doubled twice. However, Ayin not willing to call certain numbers every month turnover.

Ayin just said, his business is a competitive constraint to offer the cheapest prices. While constraints Bagyo, in addition to rising prices of yarn, fabric products are competitive with China. In terms of quality, local products from China and there is no difference. But China's price of cloth can be more oblique. Labor costs and electricity costs us more expensive, said Bagyo.

Grow faster than INDIGO ORDINARY
Nila is one type of freshwater fish widely consumed by people in the country. Understandably, this sense of well-known fish meat is very tasty. Do not be surprised, if the demand for fish that actually comes from Africa continues to increase. This condition is seen as a promising business opportunity by the tilapia fish farmers.

In fact, in order to increase incomes, many farmers are trying to make marriage nila tilapia species which he cultivated. One of the pair inter-marriages between tilapia species, Tilapia SP. Results from this crossing of a new birth of indigo, which is Nila Gift.

Gift name itself comes from the acronym for Genetic Improvement of genetic improvement of farmed Tilapia aka Nila Tilapia aquaculture. This crossing technique developed by the International Centre for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) in the Philippines in 1987.

From the testing result, production levels Nila Gift higher 30% -50% of local tilapia. ICLARM pilot fish is then distributed to 10 countries in 1993, namely Bangladesh, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Greece, Ghana, India, Malawi, Thai, Vietnamese and Filipino.

Gift Nila new entry into Indonesia in 1994, through the Research Institute of Freshwater Fishes (Balitkanwar). Nila was then cultivated in three large reservoirs in West Java, namely Cirata, Saguling, and Jatiluhur. Current production of about 20 tons per day.

According to Helmi Suherman, owner of tilapia farming Brilliant Earth Farm in Cianjur, West Java, Nila Gift genetically proven to have the advantage of higher productivity and growth of tilapia diamonds.

According to Deddy Siswandi Rosyid, owner Niaga Jaya Abadi CV in Sukabumi, West Java, the cultivation of indigo with a time of faster growth will benefit the farmers. Deddy therefore also interested wrestle Nila Gift nursery business, namely the maintenance of fish larvae into the seed was about 21 days.

According to him, the demand for seed Nila Gift never lonely. He could sell one million fry per month. Demand comes from many areas, such as Medan, Balikpapan, Aceh and Makassar.

Deddy Nila Gift seed price USD 35 per head. From seed sales, he could reach turnover of Rp 30 million-USD 40 million per month. Margin is about 20% -30%.

In contrast to Deddy, Helmi was more interested in doing business Nila Gift enlargement. He cultivates this kind of indigo in Cirata, Cianjur. Every four months, he's harvest 8 tons of tilapia.

Nila Gift Helmi sell for Rp 11 500-Rp 12,000 per kilogram (kg). From this business, he scooped up turnover to $ 80 million once the harvest.

While Anastasia Sulistio choose undergoing Gift Nila distribution business. He marketed to a number of fishing places in the Greater Jakarta area. Supply from the Bogor area.

Anastasia Nila Gift for Rp 15,000 per kilogram. Saban months, he could supply the five tons of fish up to 6 tons. turnover of each month to reach USD 75 million with a profit margin of about 5% -10%.

I'm here for this For those who still dont know, Rihanna's boo is Saudi billionaire Hassan Jameel #QuintaVoice #HeGotMonaaaay #AndHeFoine #Rihanna #HassanJameel #Ibiza #Spain

Why Intimacy With God Makes People Want to Follow You

What is our story?

How did we get there?

Where do we want to end up?

"that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, pleasing to all, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God" (Col. 1:10).

"I Live 4 U" means to live a life that brings honor to God. When we obey God in our thoughts, our attitudes, our words, our decisions and our actions, we are fully pleasing Him.

Your unique, one-of-a kind story can have a significant, life-changing impact on the lives of others. In ministry, I have discovered that a story has great power. The reason is because people connect to the story of our heart. All of us want a story that relates to our lives; we want an example, an illustration and a depiction.

I strongly believe that there is almost no other element as important as leading by example. The way in which we live our lives vividly and explicitly tells our story.

Most everyone has heard the saying, "Do as I say, not as I do." What a poor witness this establishes for other people. If we have genuinely accepted Jesus Christ into our life, it becomes evident that a new nature and spirit is working in us. His divine seed produces God's life in us, in such a way, that people don't have to wonder if we are really saved—Our life will give proof of it, making them desire to hear our story.

Paul makes this idea clear in Philippians 4:9, when he tells the church, "Do those things which you have both learned and received, and heard and seen in me." He is clear that his whole life is a living illustration of the power of intimacy with Christ. The gospel influenced Paul's messages and lifestyle. There were no hidden areas in his life. Jesus transformed him dramatically with a purpose. The purpose was that Paul's life would serve as a living demonstration of the power of the Spirit in the human heart.

When someone's life is changed through intimacy with God, their heart is fueled with a passion that unlocks their story. There is something relatable about these kinds of people. We identify with their lives and embrace their stories.

As we surrender our thoughts, emotions and works of the flesh to the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, we become a worthy vessel for the work of God's kingdom. Our lives are to be an illustration, leading by example. We are to think like God, act like God and possess a non-tolerant life-style towards sin that encourages people to connect with Jesus Christ.

People believe when they see something tangible, and they are encouraged when our life story continues to grow in Christ and depict His Spirit's transformational power.

Is your life a witness of the power of intimacy?

Is the gospel transforming you?

Are you living a life of obedience that honors God?

1. "I live 4 U": opens our heart to intimacy and connecting with God.

2. "I live 4 U": moves our life to be inspired by faith and expectation.

3. "I Live 4 U": inspires our thoughts to be informed in order to grow.

4. "I live 4 U": shares our story with others to be an illustration of honoring God. {eoa}

Arm Yourself With These Scriptural Truths to Overcome Life's Biggest Challenges

Genuine intimacy begins and ends with these four short words: "I Live 4 U."

"I Live 4 U" opens our heart to intimacy and connecting with God.

"I Live 4 U" moves our life to be inspired by faith and expectation.

"I Live 4 U" inspires us to be filled with the Word, informed in order to grow.

How can we expect God to fulfill His promises in our lives if we don't know what His promises are? The only way to know God's promises is through the revelation of God's Word to our hearts.

"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory, both now and forever. Amen" (2 Pet. 3:18).

My prayer for you today as you read this is that as God's heart and intimacy is experienced in your life that the following 16 truths of God's Word will form Christ's character in you to function with strength and energy.

Today and every day this week I want you to read and declare these 16 promises of God's Word over your life:

I CAN:

"I can do all things because of Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13).

NO LACK:

"But my God shall supply your every need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil 4:19).

NO FEAR:

"For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control" (2 Tim. 1:7).

"As God has dealt to each one a measure of faith" (Rom. 12:3, NKJV).

NO WEAKNESS:

"... the Lord is the strength of my life" (Ps. 27:1, MEV).

"The people who know their God will be strong and take action" (Dan. 11:32).

NO SUPREMACY OF SATAN OVER MY LIFE:

"For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4b).

NO DEFEAT:

"[For] God .. always causes us to triumph in Christ" (2 Cor. 2:14b).

NO LACK OF WISDOM:

"But because of Him you are in Christ Jesus, whom God made unto us wisdom ..." (1 Cor. 1:30).

NO SICKNESS:

"... by his stripes we are healed" (Is. 53:5b).

"He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses" (Matt. 8:17b).

NO WORRIES & FRUSTRATIONS:

"Cast all your care upon Him, because He cares for you" (1 Pet. 5:7). In Christ, I am "care-free."

NO BONDAGE:

"And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Cor. 3:17).

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 8:1b).

I am in Christ; therefore, I am free from condemnation.

NO LONELINESS:

[Jesus said,] "And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matt. 28:20b).

"I will never leave you, nor forsake you" (Heb. 13:5b).

NO CURSES OR BAD LUCK:

"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by being made a curse for us—as it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"... so that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith" (Gal. 3:13a, 14b).

NO DISCONTENTMENT:

"... for I have learned in whatever state I am to be content" (Phil. 4:11).

NO UNWORTHINESS:

"God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Cor. 5:21).

I am excited about declaring these 16 awesome truths of God's Word over your life this week.

"I Live 4 U." {eoa}

Your Limitless Source of Holy Inspiration and Uncontaminated Wonder

God is calling every believer to a life of uncontaminated wonder where the power of contamination from sin has been broken. Jesus said that the pure in heart are the ones who will see God (Matt. 5:8). Intimacy opens our spiritual eyes so we understand who God is and who we are. The beauty of Christ captivates our spiritual eyes.

We started writing last week on intimacy. We talked about how the word can be analyzed from a perspective of "into me see." Through intimacy, we look into God's heart of love as He looks into us. For this reason ,intimacy is transformational. God's heart for connection inspires us to embrace the intimacy for His supernatural transformation.

Another way of saying this is that intimacy leads to purity. Many people think their impurity disqualifies them from intimacy. This is a great lie from the enemy. The unconditional love that we experience through intimacy inspires us towards holiness. We desire to be like Christ as our lives are filled with His presence. Without trying, we are inspired to be conformed to the likeness of Christ (Rom. 8:29).

Purity is essential for spiritual revelation. Hebrews 12:14 says that without holiness no one will see the Lord. Yet, this isn't a holiness based on our own merits; this is holiness based on the person of Christ abiding inside of us as we hunger and thirst to be intimate with Him. The more we see Him, the more we are inspired to see Him. The more we experience His love, the more we yearn to experience His love.

Our role is to cooperate with the Holy Spirit. Each and every morning when we awaken, we should cultivate a desire to know, grow and learn, allowing eagerness, fearlessness and intensity for Christ's presence and Word to consume our heart and mind. Intimacy produces expectation in our lives.

Expect to experience God's extraordinary mercies and rich love every morning, afternoon and night. Be encouraged and energized to see what the new day brings in every aspect of your life. There is nothing so wonderful as a life inspired by faith. I believe we are to live expectant lives!

Inspire in its root meaning is; "to breathe, to blow in." Perhaps, its simplest meaning is; "to impart a truth or an idea to someone." Intimacy positions us close enough to His heart for Him to breath these truths into our souls.

His word becomes the fuel for holy inspiration. This Scripture is one of my favorite promises:

For he says, "In an acceptable time I have listened to you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.' Look, now is the accepted time; look, now is the day of salvation" (2 Cor. 6:2).

This tells me that a life of faith and favor is God's idea. It is experienced as we connect with Jesus in intimacy. The privilege of being called by the Holy Spirit to inspire and invite others into a life of faith and favor through Jesus Christ is extraordinary. The Word of God comes alive in our lives.

As believers when we trust and obey what His Word imparts in us, we activate our purpose and function with energy and vitality. His Word is the foundation to inspire us.

This week, experience His Word, His life, His breath as your heart is inspired to seek His heart. {eoa}

Sundance Channel features four cinematic salutes to this cause, beginning with the television premiere of the amazing documentary, Where the Water Meets the Sky. Morgan Freeman narrates this clever film about 23 women from the small East African nation of Zambia who, with the help of two teachers, use filmmaking as a tool to speak about their lives, the effect AIDS has had on each of them and their communities and ultimately, to challenge the silence of the local traditions. Where the Water Meets the Sky touches upon the human and courageous nature of these young women who took the risk to share the truth about AIDS in their community and share their stories with the world.
Where the Water Meets the Sky

Where the Water Meets the Sky

From writer-producer Madonna comes the premiere of I Am Because We Are, a call to action about Africa’s Malawi orphans. Also on Sundance, French filmmaker Andre Techine's drama The Witness followed by writer-director Thom Fitzgerald’s The Event, starring Parker Posey as an assistant D.A. investigating the deaths of AIDS patients in NY. Showtime’s programming starts with the Emily Abt documentary, All of Us, about the Ethiopian-American HIV/AIDS activist Dr. Mehret Mandefro and his work educating at-risk patients in the Bronx about health, relationships, and the human spirit. Love in a Time of HIV depicts HIV positive people in all walks of life, from a 27 year old in Cape Town, South Africa to a mother and daughter in New York City to a young straight couple in London. BET has joined with Alicia Keys to present a special episode of their signature show, 106 & Park. Keys and special guests will encourage teens to get tested and discuss why knowing your status is so important. Keys’ organization Keep a Child Alive is dedicated to giving treatment, care and financial support to children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. Her live sold out Nokia show will be available on You Tube at 8pm, for free, also in support of World Aids Day. In an interesting local news story, Cambridge Community Television will darken its Channel 10 and display a continuous scroll of the names of Cambridge, MA community members lost to HIV/AIDS. The names have been collected over the years and community members are urged to call or email names of loved ones and friends lost to the disease. A few times every hour commemorative pieces performed by local artists will be shown as well. Held every year on December 1, World AIDS Day reminds our global community that this epidemic is real, still relevant, and people need to aware of it. andromeda mega express orchestra - vula (2x12inch vinyl lp)
]]>Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Includes download code. Berlin's Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra returns with its fourth album Vula. Having celebrated their ten-year anniversary with a stunning series of concerts in 2016, the 18-piece's new full-length showcases a stronger focus on harmony and melody -- and yet AMEO sound no less explosive or unpredictable than before. It arrives gently, with shimmering lights, soft winds, sashaying melodies, and of course, the isotherms and isotheres function just as they should: All of a sudden, lighting strikes amid the concord of instruments, unforeseen energies erupt and upset the rhythmic scenery. Making a combined effort to create sheltering patches of harmony within the unfolding drama, leader Daniel Glatzel and his 18-piece "working band" set out to harness album number four: Vula. Another musical tour de force that connects too many dots, decades, traditions and genres to mention, Vula is quite a different beast compared to its live predecessor or the orchestra's last studio effort Bum Bum (N 029CD/LP, 2012): There's bigger, bolder strokes, and the compositions are linked by recurring motifs and harmonies, which is why the new album sounds like one entity: It is one hour-long adventure that needs to be listened to in full. The title Vula, taken from the Tumbuka language (spoken in the northern region of Malawi), indeed translates to tempest or thunderstorm. Ranging from softly trickling melodies courtesy of older masters ("Lakta Mata Ha") and hazy interludes, the mood, vibe, and pace change faster than cloud formations come flying across the screens nowadays (e.g. "Qwetoipntv Vjadfklvjieop" with its arrangement a` la H. Lachenmann). Head-nod bliss, motion picture soundtrack vibes, and even J.B. licks aren't mutually exclusive in these compositions, as AMEO showcase with "J Schleia", a track that nods both to Dilla/Grandmaster Flash and to Bach-era counterpoint techniques. Elsewhere, a pounding surf-rock beat metamorphoses over the course of 14 minutes ("In The Light Of Turmoil"), only to see them return to patches that are surprisingly catchy and calm. The final applause turns out just as thunderous though, after the album ends with the vibrant and throbbing "Papaya Flyers IX Epsylon", a live recording that already foreshadows the group's later collaboration with Hermeto Pascoal. The entire process, from writing to intricate post-production, took almost five years. ]]>

Key Messages

In West Africa, regional staple food production during the 2016/17 marketing year was well above average. International rice and wheat imports continue to support regional market supplies. Prices continued to increase seasonally in many areas in May with the onset of the lean season. Current market anomalies remain largely concentrated in the eastern marketing basin, including but not limited to: conflict-related market disruptions in the Lake Chad basin, localized above-average grain deficits in Niger, and the impacts of the continued depreciation of the Naira. In East Africa, staple food supplies remain tight and prices well above-average in South Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen. Markets remain severely disrupted by insecurity in Yemen and South Sudan. Import capacity in Yemen is uncertain, and food availability will likely remain constrained in the coming months. Uganda and Kenya are also facing below-average staple food supply and above-average and increasing prices following poor harvests. In Southern Africa, regional maize availability continued to improve in May with the progression of harvests from the 2016/17 production season. Regional maize production prospects for the current season are good with record-high harvests anticipated in South Africa. Maize prices declined sharply in most areas in May, and were below their respective 2016 levels in many areas. The exceptions to these trends are in Zambia, where prices remain above average. Low regional maize prices encouraged exports to East Africa and beyond. In Central America, staple food availability continued to decline following the end of the recent Postrera harvest and Apante harvest. Maize and bean prices were seasonally stable or decreasing across the region, with varied trends compared to average levels. In Haiti, local maize prices were firm while local black beans prices saw a modest increase from their April levels. Imported rice prices were stable as the Haitian gourde appreciated marginally against the U.S. dollar. Higher transportation costs will continue to place upward pressures on staple food prices in the coming months. Central Asia sustained adequate supplies. Wheat prices remained stable in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan, but started to decline in Pakistan with the arrival of the new harvest. Rice prices in Pakistan increased following larger export demand, affecting also rice prices in Afghanistan. Intraregional trade is expected to fill staples’ deficits on importing countries. International staple food markets remain well supplied. Maize prices fell, soybean prices rose while rice and wheat prices were mixed. Crude oil prices fell and remain well below average.

          African Cichlids Fish
African Cichlids Fish are beautiful tropical freshwater fish that are very popular to fish enthusiast. They tend to be a fairly aggressive fish and do not do well with some types of fish from other regions. Most of the African Cichlids found in fish tanks today come from one of three rift lakes in Africa. Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Victoria are the not the only lakes with cichlids, but these three tend to be the most popular.
My first apartment had six fish tanks with two of them holding fish from these lakes. I did not realize at the time that I was mixing fish from different regions of the world and I lost a number of fish to the aggressive African Cichlids. Some of the more popular varieties of fish from these lakes are the Oscar's an Jack Dempseys. My wife worked in a pet store at the time and knew of a woman who had an Oscar jump right out of the tank and bite her on the nose. Apparently she thought it was cute to lean over the tank holding feeder fish and watch the Oscar jump in the air. I bet she never did that again.
Over the years we sold off the tanks one by one until now we have no more fish tanks. I've been thinking of getting back into it again and started researching African Cichlids.

SEBAGAI SEORANG ATHEIST SAYA SUNGGUH
PERCAYA AFRIKA MEMERLUKAN ALLAH

Biology Prof. returns to Malawi 25 years later on Fulbright

Kittelberger

Prof. Matthew Kittelberger graduated from Harvard University without a clear sense of what he wanted to do in his career, so he decided to join the Peace Corps. He taught science, math, English, and agriculture at an all-boys boarding high school in the country of Malawi in southern Africa.

“And it was there that I discovered the joys, and the challenges, of being a teacher," he said.

That was in 1992. Now, Kittelberger is planning to return to Malawi with his family, this time on a Fulbright Scholar award. For nine months starting in January, he will be teaching science and developing science curricula at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi in Zomba. At Chancellor, Kittelberger says 70 percent of students studying biology end up pursuing careers as secondary school teachers. By preparing these future teachers, he hopes to impact the nature of science education in Malawi.

“I’ve always wanted to connect with Malawi again in some way,” he said.

School children in MalawiWhen Kittelberger was putting together his application for the Fulbright, he reached out to one of his former advisees, Christine Serwan ’13. Kittelberger helped Serwan when she was applying to the Peace Corps during her senior year. Serendipity placed Serwan in Malawi, and now Kittelberger was curious to learn her perspective.

“Pretty much from day one of my knowing I was heading to Malawi, Dr. Kittelberger started talking about how he could reconnect to Malawi, and maybe even get back there after all this time away,” said Serwan.

“We stayed in touch via email while she was in Malawi and spent a lot of time talking about her experience and my experiences in the country,” Kittelberger said. “It became clear that a lot of the challenges of teaching high school science in Malawi hadn’t changed all that much in the intervening years.”

That got Kittelberger thinking about how he might work on that. He figured the logical place to start would be with teachers.

“Better teacher training means improving Malawi’s capacity,” said Kittelberger. “Improving the quality of teachers teaching secondary science could go a long way.”

“The students of Malawi are beyond lucky they are going to have someone like [Kittelberger] teaching them,” said Serwan. “He even still remembers some Chichewa, the local language. I'm excited to see where his journey takes him this time and hopefully will be able to visit him while he is there.”

Their Malawi bond is an extension of the two-way teaching-mentoring relationship that began at Gettysburg. “I can honestly say I would not be where I am today had I not had [him] as an advisor and mentor, and I am so glad to be able to stay connected to him now as colleagues through our experiences in Malawi,” said Serwan.

One of the teaching methods Kittelberger said he hopes to bring to Malawi is a focus on active learning. In Malawi, the traditional British model of teaching is lecture-based and primarily focused on memorization.

“[In the United States], science education has moved away from lecturing and passive pedagogy where students sit and listen,” said Kittelberger. “Students learn better when they are active participants in their learning. The hope is to merge some of my experience with more active learning pedagogies with the curriculum [in Malawi].”

In Malawi, Kittelberger—whose research focuses on the evolution of brain circuits involved in vocal and social behavior—will teach biochemistry and animal physiology. While he is there, Kittelberger hopes to make his way to the lakes of the Great Rift Valley to study cichlid fish. They are a family of fish from which scientists have learned a great deal about evolution, including the evolution of social behavior.

Kittelberger

But Malawians themselves haven’t been as involved in this work, explains Kittelberger, despite the fact that Malawian cichlids are renowned worldwide as a model system for understanding evolution.

“If I can model some of that for the students who I’m teaching, who are then going off to teach in high schools, they will have a better understanding of how to use local resources to do hands-on biology.”

When Kittelberger returns home, he anticipates the experience will also impact his teaching at Gettysburg.

“[At Gettysburg], we think a lot about how to effectively teach students [from different backgrounds],” he said. “And by having to wrestle with that [in Malawi], I’ll be able to use those lessons when I’m thinking about students and the different strategies I can use here.”

Kittelberger is the third member of Gettysburg’s faculty to earn a prestigious Fulbright Scholar award in the past three years.

The Fulbright Program, which aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government; it is overseen by The United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Fulbright alumni include 58 Nobel Laureates, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 31 MacArthur Fellows, 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, and thousands of leaders across the private, public and non-profit sectors.
