Nokia – IP networks re-imagined
Recently we have seen Cisco predict that busy hour global IP traffic will grow 4.6-fold (35% CAGR) from 2016 to 2021, reaching 4.3 Pb/s by 2021, compared to average Internet traffic that will grow 3.2-fold (26% CAGR) over the same period to reach 717 Tb/s by 2021. The latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, released earlier this week, calculates that the total traffic in mobile networks increased by 70% between the end of Q1 2016 and the end of Q1 2017. And now, Nokia Bell Labs has just announced its own prediction: IP traffic will more than double in the next five years, reaching 330 exabytes per month by 2022 while growing at a 25% CAGR. The company anticipates that peak data rates will grow even faster at nearly 40% annually. Nokia Bell Labs also predicts that 3D/4K/UHD will experience a 4.79x growth from 2017 – 22, that wireless traffic will experience 7.5x growth from 2017 – 22, and that worldwide IoT devices to grow from 12bn in 2017 to 100bn in 2025.

Nokia unveils next gen networking processing engine

Nokia's processing engine sets the stage for perhaps the most significant announcement from the company since the merger of Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks in 2015. In a press event entitled 'IP networks reimagined', Nokia unveiled its FP4 silicon, featuring the 'first' 2.4 Tbit/s network processor, up to 6x more powerful than processors currently available. The proprietary chipset is designed for a new class of petabit-class routers.

Core routers traditionally have been the 'big iron' that powers the heart of the Internet. It is a product category dominated by Cisco, Huawei, Juniper and Nokia, including via its existing 7950 XRS routing platform. However, the market has been in flux. Earlier this month, Dell’Oro Group reported a significant break in Q1 17 with Huawei taking the top spot from Cisco in the core router market for the first time. The report also found Huawei taking over second spot from Nokia in the SP edge router and CES market. The primary reason cited for this shift is that the SP core routing business is only growing at a low single-digit rate, while China Mobile is defying the trend with significant investments in their IP core backbone, for which Huawei is the lead supplier. Nevertheless, the overall predictions for rapid growth in IP traffic over the coming five years makes it more likely that service providers will need a significant refresh of their core backbones to handle hundreds of 100 or 400 Gbit/s connections at major nodes.

Nokia's previous generation FP3 chipset, unveiled by Alcatel-Lucent in June 2011 and launched in 2012, packed 288 RISC cores operating at 1 GHz and leveraged 40 nm process technology; the FP2 chipset offered 112 cores at 840 MHz and was built in 90 nm. This network processor lineage can be traced back to TiMetra Networks, a start-up based in Mountain View, California that launched its first carrier-class routing platforms in 2003.

TiMetra, which was headed by Basil Alwan, was acquired by Alcatel-Lucent later in 2003 for approximately $150 million in stock. The product line went on to become the highly successful 7450, 7750 and eventually 7950 carrier platforms - the basis for the IP division at Alcatel-Lucent. Not bad for an idea from a small start-up to grow into the star platform underpinning all of Alcatel-Lucent + Nokia Siemens Networks.

In a launch day webcast, Basil Alwan, now president of Nokia's IP/Optical Networks business group, said we are moving into a new phase of the Internet requiring 'cloud-scale routing'. First, he noted that there is market confusion between Internet-class routers and core data centre switches, which are being used to power the hyperscale infrastructure of the Internet content providers. High-end, data centre spine switches are capable of routing packets at high rates and can handle access control lists (ACLs). Likewise, conventional big iron core routers can switch data flows, and are sometimes deployed in data centres. However, there have been tradeoffs when this role reversal happens. Nokia's new FP4 chipset aims to fix that.

First multi-terabit NPU silicon

Six years have passed since the FP3, or roughly two cycles in the evolution of Moore's Law, so naturally one would expect the new silicon to be smaller, faster and more powerful and efficient. But Alwan said the company took its time to rethink how the packet processing works at the silicon level. To begin with, Nokia redesigned the onboard memory, employing 2.5D and 3D layouts on 16 nm Fin Field Effect Transistor (FinFET) technology. The single chip contains 22 dies, including memory stacks and control logic. It runs at 2.4 Tbit/s half-duplex, or 6x more capacity than the current generation 400 Gbit/s FP3 chipset. The FP4 will support full terabit IP flows. All conventional routing capabilities are included. Deep classification capabilities include enhanced packet intelligence and control, policy controls, telemetry and security.

The FP4 could be used to provide an in-service upgrade to Nokia's current line of core routers and carrier switches. It will also be used to power a new family of 7750 SR-s series routers designed for single-node, cloud scale density. In terms of specs, the SR-s boasts a 144 Tbit/s configuration supporting port densities of up to 144 future terabit links, 288 x 400 Gbit/s ports, or 1,440 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports. Absolute capacity could be doubled for a maximum of 288 Tbit/s configuration. It runs the same software as the company's widely-deployed systems. The first 7750 SR-s boxes are already running in Nokia labs and the first commercial shipments are expected in Q4.

Nokia is also introducing a chassis extension option to push its router into petabit territory. Without using the switching shelf concept employed in the multi-chassis designs of its competitors, Nokia is offering the means to integrate up to six of its 7750 SRS-s routers into a single system. This results in 576 Tbit/s of capacity, enough for densities of up to 2,880 x 100 GBE ports or 720 x 400 Gbit/s ports. Adding up the numbers, it is not truly petabit-class, but at 576 Tbit/s it is more than halfway there.

Network telemetry leads to security
Another interesting twist concerns security and petabit-class routing. In December 2016, Nokia agreed to acquire Deepfield, a start-up specialising in real-time analytics for IP network performance management and security. Deepfield, founded in 2011 and based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has developed an analytics platform that identifies over 30,000 popular cloud applications and services. Its Internet Genome tracks how traffic runs to and through networks to reach subscribers, in real time, and without the need for probes, taps and monitors in the network itself. At the time of the deal, Nokia said it would integrate Deepfield big data analytics with the dynamic control capabilities of open SDN platforms, such as the Nokia Network Services Platform (NSP) and Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Platform (VSP).

Expanding on this idea, Alwan said Deepfield can really leverage the routers rather than probes to understand what is happening to the traffic. Fewer probes mean lower investment. More importantly, Deepfield could be used to track DDoS attacks passing through the core of the network rather than at the edge destination target. The new FP4 silicon is said to be a very good match for this application.

Edward-- thanks for that link, I had missed it. Yes, it was actually sent aloft today, so I assume the telemetry is "real." There is a brief launch video, showing the balloon being inflated, etc. It should show up in the "recommended-for-you column," at YouTube, if you spend any time watching these. Highly enjoy your tales from working in the industry! I occasionally got caught up in few all-nighter's earning my keep, when my Professor was testing amphetamine, Ritalin, and placebo, on rats. Had to make sure the food & water dispenser's, and all the counters, remained functioning. (We took bets amongst ourselves on which subjects had received the "active ingredient.")
Guiding Healthcare Technology Implementation: A New Integrated Technology Implementation Model
imageHealthcare technology is used to improve delivery of safe patient care by providing tools for early diagnosis, ongoing monitoring, and treatment of patients. This technology includes bedside physiologic monitors, pulse oximetry devices, electrocardiogram machines, bedside telemetry, infusion pumps, ventilators, and electronic health records. Healthcare costs are a challenge for society, and hospitals are pushed to lower costs by discharging patients sooner. Healthcare technology is being used to facilitate these early discharges. There is little understanding of how healthcare facilities purchase, implement, and adopt technology. There are two areas of theories and models currently used when investigating technology: technology adoption and implementation science. Technology adoption focuses mainly on how the end users adopt technology, whereas implementation science describes methods, interventions, and variables that promote the use of evidence-based practice. These two approaches are not well informed by each other. In addition, amplifying the knowledge gap is the limited conceptualization of healthcare technology implementation frameworks. To bridge this gap, an all-encompassing model is needed. To understand the key technology implementation factors utilized by leading healthcare facilities, the prevailing technology adoption and implementation science theories and models were reviewed. From this review, an integrated technology implementation model will be set forth.

Xavier Mertens: FIRST TC Amsterdam 2017 Wrap-Up

Here is my quick wrap-up of the FIRST Technical Colloquium hosted by Cisco in Amsterdam. This is my first participation to a FIRST event. FIRST is an organization helping in incident response as stated on their website:

FIRST is a premier organization and recognized global leader in incident response. Membership in FIRST enables incident response teams to more effectively respond to security incidents by providing access to best practices, tools, and trusted communication with member teams.

The event was organized at Cisco office. Monday was dedicated to a training about incident response and the two next days were dedicated to presentations. All of them focussing on the defence side (“blue team”). Here are a few notes about interesting stuff that I learned.

The first day started with two guys from Facebook: Eric Water @ Matt Moren. They presented the solution developed internally at Facebook to solve the problem of capturing network traffic: “PCAP don’t scale”. In fact, with their solution, it scales! To investigate incidents, PCAPs are often the gold mine. They contain many IOC’s but they also introduce challenges: the disk space, the retention policy, the growing network throughput. When vendors’ solutions don’t fit, it’s time to built your own solution. Ok, only big organizations like Facebook have resources to do this but it’s quite fun. The solution they developed can be seen as a service: “PCAP as a Service”. They started by building the right hardware for sensors and added a cool software layer on top of it. Once collected, interesting PCAPs are analyzed using the Cloudshark service. They explained how they reached top performances by mixing NFS and their GlusterFS solution. Really a cool solution if you have multi-gigabits networks to tap!

The next presentation focused on “internal network monitoring and anomaly detection through host clustering” by Thomas Atterna from TNO. The idea behind this talk was to explain how to monitor also internal traffic. Indeed, in many cases, organizations still focus on the perimeter but internal traffic is also important. We can detect proxies, rogue servers, C2, people trying to pivot, etc. The talk explained how to build clusters of hosts. A cluster of hosts is a group of devices that have the same behaviour like mail servers, database servers, … Then to determine “normal” behaviour per cluster and observe when individual hosts deviate. Clusters are based on the behaviour (the amount of traffic, the number of flows, protocols, …). The model is useful when your network is quite close and stable but much more difficult to implement in an “open” environment (like universities networks).
Then Davide Carnali made a nice review of the Nigerian cybercrime landscape. He explained in details how they prepare their attacks, how they steal credentials, how they deploy the attacking platform (RDP, RAT, VPN, etc). The second part was a step-by-step explanation how they abuse companies to steal (sometimes a lot!) of money. An interesting fact reported by Davide: the time required between the compromisation of a new host (to drop malicious payload) and the generation of new maldocs pointing to this host is only… 3 hours!
The next presentation was performed by Gal Bitensky ( Minerva):  “Vaccination: An Anti-Honeypot Approach”. Gal (re-)explained what the purpose of a honeypot and how they can be defeated. Then, he presented a nice review of ways used by attackers to detect sandboxes. Basically, when a malware detects something “suspicious” (read: which makes it think that it is running in a sandbox), it will just silently exit. Gal had the idea to create a script which creates plenty of artefacts on a Windows system to defeat malware. His tool has been released here.
Paul Alderson (FireEye) presented “Injection without needles: A detailed look at the data being injected into our web browsers”. Basically, it was a huge review of 18 months of web-inject and other configuration data gathered from several botnets. Nothing really exciting.
The next talk was more interesting… Back to the roots: SWITCH presented their DNS Firewall solution. This is a service they provide not to their members. It is based on DNS RPZ. The idea was to provide the following features:
  • Prevention
  • Detection
  • Awareness

Indeed, when a DNS request is blocked, the user is redirected to a landing page which gives more details about the problem. Note that this can have a collateral issue like blocking a complete domain (and not only specific URLs). This is a great security control to deploy. Note that RPZ support is implemented in many solutions, especially Bind 9.

Finally, the first day ended with a presentation by Tatsuya Ihica from Recruit CSIRT: “Let your CSIRT do malware analysis”. It was a complete review of the platform that they deployed to perform more efficient automatic malware analysis. The project is based on Cuckoo that was heavily modified to match their new requirements.

The second day started with an introduction to the FIRST organization made by Aaron Kaplan, one of the board members. I liked the quote given by Aaron:

If country A does not talk to country B because of ‘cyber’, then a criminal can hide in two countries

Then, the first talk was really interesting: Chris Hall presented “Intelligence Collection Techniques“. After explaining the different sources where intelligence can be collected (open sources, sinkholes, …), he reviewed a serie of tools that he developed to help in the automation of these tasks. His tools addresses:
  • Using the Google API, VT API
  • Paste websites (like pastebin.com)
  • YARA rules
  • DNS typosquatting
  • Whois queries

All the tools are available here. A very nice talk with tips & tricks that you can use immediately in your organization.

The next talk was presented by a Cisco guy, Sunil Amin: “Security Analytics with Network Flows”. Netflow isn’t a new technology. Initially developed by Cisco, they are today a lot of version and forks. Based on the definition of a “flow”: “A layer 3 IP communication between two endpoints during some time period”, we got a review the Netflow. Netflow is valuable to increase the visibility of what’s happening on your networks but it has also some specific points that must be addressed before performing analysis. ex: de-duplication flows. They are many use cases where net flows are useful:
  • Discover RFC1918 address space
  • Discover internal services
  • Look for blacklisted services
  • Reveal reconnaissance
  • Bad behaviours
  • Compromised hosts, pivot
    • HTTP connection to external host
    • SSH reverse shell
    • Port scanning port 445 / 139
I would expect a real case where net flow was used to discover something juicy. The talk ended with a review of tools available to process net flow data: SiLK, nfdump, ntop but log management can also be used like the ELK stack or Apache Spot. Nothing really new but a good reminder.
Then, Joel Snape from BT presented “Discovering (and fixing!) vulnerable systems at scale“. BT, as a major player on the Internet, is facing many issues with compromized hosts (from customers to its own resources). Joel explained the workflow and tools they deployed to help in this huge task. It is based on the following circle: Introduction,  data collection, exploration and remediation (the hardest part!).
I like the description of their “CERT dropbox” which can be deployed at any place on the network to perform the following tasks:
  • Telemetry collection
  • Data exfiltration
  • Network exploration
  • Vulnerability/discovery scanning
An interesting remark from the audience: ISP don’t have only to protect their customers from the wild Internet but also the Internet from their (bad) customers!
Feike Hacqueboard, from TrendMicro, explained:  “How political motivated threat actors attack“. He reviewed some famous stories of compromised organizations (like the French channel TV5) then reviewed the activity of some interesting groups like C-Major or Pawn Storm. A nice review of the Yahoo! OAuth abuse was performed as well as the tab-nabbing attack against OWA services.
Jose Enrique Hernandez (Zenedge) presented “Lessons learned in fighting Targeted Bot Attacks“. After a quick review of what bots are (they are not always malicious – think about the Google crawler bot), he reviewed different techniques to protect web resources from bots and why they often fail, like the JavaScript challenge or the Cloudflare bypass. These are “silent challenges”. Loud challenges are, by examples, CAPTCHA’s. Then Jose explained how to build a good solution to protect your resources:
  • You need a reverse proxy (to be able to change quests on the fly)
  • LUA hooks
  • State db for concurrency
  • Load balancer for scalability
  • fingerprintjs2 / JS Challenge

Finally, two other Cisco guys, Steve McKinney & Eddie Allan presented “Leveraging Event Streaming and Large Scale Analysis to Protect Cisco“. CIsco is collecting a huge amount of data on a daily basis (they speak in Terabytes!). As a Splunk user, they are facing an issue with the indexing licence. To index all these data, they should have extra licenses (and pay a lot of money). They explained how to “pre-process” the data before sending them to Splunk to reduce the noise and the amount of data to index.
The idea is to pub a “black box” between the collectors and Splunk. They explained what’s in this black box with some use cases:
  • WSA logs (350M+ events / day)
  • Passive DNS (7.5TB / day)
  • Users identification
  • osquery data

Some useful tips that gave and that are valid for any log management platform:

  • Don’t assume your data is well-formed and complete
  • Don’t assume your data is always flowing
  • Don’t collect all the things at once
  • Share!

Two intense days full of useful information and tips to better defend your networks and/or collect intelligence. The slides should be published soon.

Pangu – simulating planetary close encounters

The high performance of ESA’s new generation ‘Planetary and Asteroid Natural scene Generation Utility’ or Pangu software enables real-time testing of both landing algorithms and hardware.

‘Entry, descent and landing’ on a planetary body is an extremely risky move: decelerating from orbital velocities of multiple km per second down to zero, at just the right moment to put down softly on an unknown surface, while avoiding craters, boulders and other unpredictable hazards.

But Pangu can generate realistic images of planets and asteroids on a real-time basis, as if  approaching a landing site during an actual mission. This allows the testing of landing algorithms, or dedicated microprocessors or entire landing cameras or other hardware ‘in the loop’ – plugged directly into the simulation – or run thousands of simulations one after the other on a ‘Monte Carlo’ basis, to test all eventualities.

Seen here is a Pangu recreation of the Mars Curiosity’s rover’s approach to Mars, using original telemetry, and then a view of Mars moon Phobos.

This is followed by another recreation the Japanese Hayabusa probe’s encounter with the rubble-strewn Itokawa near-Earth asteroid, and finally a telemetry-based recreation of  the field of view of the New Horizons mission as it performed its rapid flyby of Pluto.

This new generation of Pangu was developed for ESA by the University of Dundee in Scotland.

Windows 10 Has Halved Data Collection: Privacy Watchdog

French data watchdog CNIL has closed its investigation of Microsoft and Windows 10 after updates to the OS cut its telemetry gathering by 50 percent.

Download at your own risk: Bitcoin mine

Recently we have seen an emerging trend among malware distributors - Bitcoin miners being integrated into installers of game repacks.

This type of system hijacking is just one of the many ways to exploit a user by utilizing their system's computing resources to earn more cash. Malware is easily bundled with game installers that are then uploaded and shared with unsuspecting users using torrent download sites. Once a machine is infected, a downloaded Bitcoin miner silently carries out mining operations without the user's consent.

We have seen this technique used by Trojan:Win32/Maener.A. This threat is dropped byTrojanDropper:Win32/Maener.A as a bundle with some games. Some of the torrent files names we have seen bundled with this threat are:

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon.Future Soldier.Deluxe Edition.v 1.7 + 3 DLC.(Новый Диск).(2012).RepackDon't Starve.(2013) [Decepticon] RePackKings Bounty Dark Side by xatabSniper_Elite_III_8_DLC_RePack_MAXAGENTTROPICO_5Ghost_Recon_Future_Soldier_v1.8_RepackTrials.Fusion.RePack.R.G.FreedomKing's Bounty Dark Side.(2014) [Decepticon] RePackWatch Dogs.(2014) [Decepticon] RePack

These files can be easily acquired by anyone who downloads games from a torrent website. The games are repacked to further lure gamers to download the compressed files for free. The installer that we detect as TrojanDropper:Win32/Maener.A is available in Russian and English languages only. It seems to be primarily affecting Russian users, as shown by its infection telemetry.

Figure 1: The five countries with the highest number of detections

An example of the game installer execution is depicted in Figure 2. When the installer application (setup.exe) is run, Trojan:Win32/Maener.A also executes in the background and downloads its Bitcoin mining components.

Figure 2: An example of a game installer. When run, the installer also executes the malware payload
Trojan:Win32/Maener.A can be found running under the filename ActivateDesktop.exe. It uses this reputable file name in order to hide its true identity. When run, it connects to a remote server, eventually downloading a Bitcoin miner and installing it on the system.

The Bitcoin miner is installed as connost.exe and can be launched with the command prompt:Connost.exe -a m7 -o stratum+tcp://:port -u -p .
We have also seen this miner use the file names minerd.exe, svchost.exe and winhost.exe.
Trojan:Win32/Maener.A also adds the following registry entry to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\RunGoogleUpdate_CF4A51A46014ACCDC56E3A64BAC64B76 = c:\Trash-100\ActivateDesktop.exe
To help stay protected, we recommend you to install an up-to-date, real-time protection security product such as Microsoft Security Essentials, or Windows Defender for Windows 8.1. And, most importantly, only download from legitimate and reputable sources.

Hardcore Porsche 911 GT2 RS makes debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed
There’s also a titanium exhaust system that is 7kg lighter than the standard unit
New Porsche packs 690bhp to dispatch 0-62mph in 2.8sec and top out at 211mph

Porsche’s Motorsport division has taken the performance potential of the 911 to new heights with the unveiling of a GT2 RS model at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Available to order now and priced from £207,506, this new 911 is the first GT2 model to be launched since 2010 and the fourth to enter production since its introduction to the Porsche line-up in 1995.

The new rear-wheel-drive coupé is powered by a heavily reworked version of the twinturbocharged 3.8-litre flat six-cylinder engine used in the latest 911 Turbo. The revisions crank its peak power up to a heady 690bhp — a considerable 325bhp more than the standard 911 Carrera and 79bhp more than the previous GT2 in 2010.

Along with 553lb ft — 37lb ft more than its forerunner — the power is sufficient to propel the 1470kg 911 GT2 RS from standstill to 62mph in a claimed 2.8sec, which is 0.1sec inside the official time quoted for the quickest-accelerating 911 to date, the 911 Turbo S.

A claimed 211mph also enables it to match the top speed of the plug-in hybrid-powered 918 Spyder. That makes the new 911 GT2 RS not only the quickest-accelerating but also the joint-fastest road-legal series-production Porsche model yet.

Opinion: how extreme will the Porsche 911 GT2 RS be?

The design of the new 911 GT2 RS closely follows that of the two-year-old 911 GT3 RS. The changes over recent 911 models are mostly functional, with cooling requirements and additional downforce taking clear priority over stylistic concerns.

A wide central indent within the bonnet and roof and a two-tone paint scheme provide visual links to earlier competition-focused aircooled 911 models from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

In a bid to trim weight, the bonnet, front wings, exterior mirror housings and many of the air duct surrounds are carbonfibre. In line with weightsaving initiatives used on the 911 GT3 RS, the new 911 GT2 RS also has a magnesium roof.

With a kerb weight of 1470kg, the new 991-series model is 100kg heavier than the previous 997-based 911 GT2, although it is also 91mm longer than its predecessor.

Mirroring the strategy taken with the 918 Spyder, Porsche is offering a £21,042 Weissach Package that pares an extra 30kg from the car’s overall weight through various measures, including the adoption of carbonfibre for the roof and roll bars and magnesium for the wheels.

Among the powertrain developments are larger turbos with water-to-water intercoolers to reduce the exhaust gas temperature at high revs for improved combustion efficiency and added top-end power.

There’s also a titanium exhaust system that is 7kg lighter than the standard unit and has a new routing that is claimed to enhance the exhaust note.

The car runs on the samesized wheels and tyres as the 911 GT3 RS: 20in centre-locking rims up front shod with 265/35 tyres and 21in rear wheels with 325/30-profile rubber.

The 911 GT2 RS uses a revised version of Porsche’s ZF-sourced seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and mechanical locking differential. Described by Porsche as a custom component, the gearbox receives new ratios, among other changes, to take full advantage of the increased power and torque.

Porsche has also confirmed that the model retains the four-wheel-steering system from the 911 Turbo and comes as standard with carbonceramic brakes.

In addition, the stability management system has been uniquely calibrated and features a Sport mode described by Porsche as being “tailored to provide optimal driving dynamics”.

Inside, the 911 GT2 RS uses a combination of black leather and red Alcantara upholstery as well as carbonfibre trim elements. There is a sports steering wheel with paddle shifts and carbonfibre-backed motorsport-spec seats.

Standard equipment includes a Porsche Communication Management system, which groups infotainment functions – including Porsche Track Precision, a circuit telemetry app – into a central touchscreen-based unit. An optional Chrono Package expands the Porsche Communication Management system’s functions to include a performance display, which can be used to show lap times.

To mark the launch of the new 911 GT2 RS, Porsche Motorsport has teamed up with Porsche Design to create a new watch, which will be offered exclusively to buyers of the new 911 variant.

What is Microsoft doing to keep me buying their products? Not a lot.

Really? If you buy a Kaby Lake or Ryzen processor you are forced to use WIndows 10 even though Windows 8.1 has several years of support left.

Nope. A unique id like this, if accessible from the browser is like a super cookie. It can track everything you access on the web. You might not see the product except in ads, but it doesn't mean that information isn't being collected.

I recently watched consternation in a public meeting because the presenter's computer chose to start updating his computer in the middle of his presentation. Some of Microsoft's "policies" are as bad as Apple's insistence that their computers have minimal ports.

The DOD. Good for the stockholders. I wouldn't call that a recommendation from a knowledgeable source. I remember working for a defense contractor that had, at the time, over 400K employees. They rolled out Windows 95 instead of the recommended Windows NT because one of the executives on the decision committee had it at home and "thought it was pretty good". And the DOD doesn't pay enough to get good technical help.

@MadMartigan, Either your eyes have changed to brown since you were born or you're only seriously misinformed. I sit in front of a couple of Windows 7 boxes, a Mac and a Linux box. I used Windows VMs (including some running 10) along with other versions of Mac OSX and Linux. I'm one of the people you're talking about and you're flat wrong. You're right about one thing. I wouldn't have upgraded to Windows 10 with the old telemetry settings. No sure about the current situation. If Microsoft is still collecting too much information when Windows 7 becomes unusable or unsupported, I won't be running Windows 10 or it's successor. Oh, and I've been a Microsoft stockholder since you were in kindergarten. I don't hate Microsoft. I just don't like having MY computer used to collect information about my life, my habits and my views by Microsoft or anyone else.

Wireless Telemetry Growing to $25.3bn by 2009, as Enterprise Wakes up to Real-Time Efficiency Savings:  "wireless telemetry (or AMR – Automated Meter Reading) will [grow] - according to industry analysts Juniper Research - with revenues rising from $11.6bn in 2006 to $25.3bn by 2009.  According to Juniper, the substantial rise in revenues - expected to quadruple by 2011 to $40.8bn - will contrast with limited growth in telematics from $6.4bn to $11bn in the same period – owing to current widespread usage in many commercial vehicles due to legislation. Other outlets including security and surveillance, highway and public transport signs, and health care will show encouraging signs rising from a cumulative low of $2bn in 2006 to over $9bn by 2009."

Create an animated video for flood warning system by Jameskoker
I need a short video produced for a Kickstarter campaign. I need the video to be of an animated style and to explain the nature of the product that I am trying to raise the capitol funding for. In my local area, and the whole east coast of Australia, annual flooding results in people trying to cross flooded waters in their vehicles. Multiple deaths occur each year due to people taking this risks. My system is designed to take out the guess work for motorists and provide a safer alternative route. About the Product; I have designed a Flood Activated Warning System, to assist road users during severe weather conditions, in particular flooding. This system is called "FAWS" it stands for "Flood Activated Warning System". I need the safety benefits of my system outlined, along with the current difficulties motorists face when trying to navigate a route around flooded waters. The system consists of an lcd screen and hardware, installed at problematic points on main roads and bridges that regularly experience flooding. This system has 2 main features. 1. At the location of each installed unit (large waterproof LCD screen and hardware), the unit will be able to measure the water level. Using this measurement, the system will be able to determine when flooding is occurring and display when the road is closed to vehicles. This message will be displayed on the LCD screen and let motorists know wether the road is open or closed. 2. Each individual unit will be interconnected with all other local units and a local command centre. This will mean that when a road is closed due to flooding, an alternate route may be suggested for motorists. this will happen on the LCD display, on the unit where the flooding is occurring. This will enable motorists to be able to make better informed choices during natural disasters and navigate around dangerously flooded road, via a safer route. The telemetry aspect of the interconnected units, will also enable severe weather warnings (fire, flood, snow, hurricane etc.) to be forecast to motorists across the network of units, via the LCD displays. The telemetry will also interconnect with an app, so the app users can look to see what roads are open and closed due to flooding, before they start their journey. The video need to strongly depict the current dangerous behaviour of motorists when crossing flooded roads and the countless loss of life in doing so. It also needs to highlight this system is as being of a huge public safety benefit and a fit to the problem. The current system in place for most councils, is to manually close roads. this means physically sending someone out to the effected area and manually closing the roads and then manually reopen then once the flooding has subsided. If you google image search "flooded roads cars australia", there are a lot of images illustrating the issues motorists have, along with the rescue services that have to save people from their cars. There are literally hundreds of rescues each year in Australia alone, performed due to people trying to cross roads that are flooded. If the roads were automatically closed using my system, this would solve that issue. I have added some images to illustrate the issue. I have also added and image of the current flood signage used on local roadways. Thanks for taking the time to look at this project. I hope you can create a video that i can use. (Prize: 200)

The Soviet Land-Based Ballistic Missile Program, 1945-1972: An Historical Overview, 1973

Background Although this document has been released prior to my Mandatory Declassification Review (MDR) request, there has been quite a bit more released (ie: no longer redacted). I requested this in October of 2016, and received this reviewed copy on 30 May 2017. According to the document: Before and during World War II, the Germans had developed a variety of missile systems. At the end of the war, they stood alone in the numbers and complexity of these systems. Some were used during the war with varying degrees of effectiveness; others were evolving when the war ended. Many of these missile systems, and the scientists who had developed them, were acquired by the Soviets after the war, permitting the USSR to quickly establish its own missile program. At first the Soviets attempted to keep the missile-related facilities intact on German soil, using German scientists to the maximum extent possible while Soviet counterparts were gaining familiarity in a new field. Later, the Germans, and most of the missile-related facilities, were sent to the USSR, where work continued under Soviet control. The V-2, a German rocket used operationally late in the war, was the system most extensively studied and emulated by the Soviets. It was the first such missile tested in the USSR, inaugurating the opening in 1947 of the Soviet Union’s first missile test range at Kapustin Yar. Reflections of its design were seen years later in the evolving Soviet missile program. Other missiles, and missile-related systems and subsystems, also fell into Soviet hands after the war; they too provided the Soviets with technology and hardware that would serve them well in later years. By 1953, most of the Germans had departed the USSR, and subsequent developments were by and large the result of indigenous Soviet programs planned, engineered, developed, and produced by Soviet personnel. In 1957, the USSR successfully tested its first ICBM, and by the early 1960s it had available a variety of ballistic missiles, from short-range ones to those capable of· covering intercontinental distances. By this time, three additional major test ranges were operational or evolving, and the Soviets had launched earth satellites into orbit. They had also successfully conducted planetary probes, and they had launched the first man into space. By the early 1970s, further significant developments had occurred in the Soviet. missile effort. By this time, the Soviet Union had a major land-based ballistic missile force in being, capable of achieving ranges up to 7,000 nautical miles or more. Refinements in guidance and control systems saw missile accuracy improve steadily. Yields of nuclear warheads of deployed missiles varied up to 25 megatons. Multiple reentry vehicles, penetration aids, and multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles had evolved or were evolving by this time. Hardened, dispersed silos had come into widespread use, and mobile missile systems, mainly for tactical use, had been deployed in large numbers. In the early 1970s, tests began of newer-generation missiles, further enhancing the Soviet Union’s capabilities in this area. Incorporating refinements in a number of significant areas, these newer missiles, coupled with the older ones, provide the Soviet Union with an effective weapons mix. Thus, from the early German assistance, from technology gleaned from Western sources, and through its own efforts, it can be seen that the USSR progressed steadily throughout -the years in the missile field, culminating in its advanced systems of today. Just as the Soviets were embarking on a new and unfamiliar field in these early years, so did the Sigint establishment find itself faced with a new and unfamiliar . problem. Organizations had to be built from nothing; personnel had to be trained; facilities and systems had to be developed; and a fragmented effort had to be streamlined and centralized. To further complicate the problem, · the main inter.est of the U.S. Comint establishment after World War II concerned ·communications signals, in particular those transmitted in the HF band and below. Equipment, systems, and facilities were not available to adequately handle telemetry signals – from fast-moving missiles propagated in higher frequency bands.           France drops Windows 10 privacy case after Microsoft changes telemetry settings
There have been lots of complaints about invasion of privacy since the release of Windows 10. Microsoft's telemetry lead to several lawsuits, including one from France's National Data Protection Commission which said Windows 10 was collecting "excessive personal data" about users. But now the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) has decided to drop its case against Microsoft. The commission is happy that sufficient steps have been taken to reduce the amount of data that is collected and users are now informed about data collection. Announcing that it was dropping the lawsuit, the CNIL says that: "The company… [Continue Reading]

          CAN question to developers

This is not just a matter of some missing code. Comparing
UAVCAN and the DJI CANBUS is like comparing apples and oranges.
What has to be done is that the DJI CANBUS protocol needs to be simulated
by UAVCAN using the information coming from the flight controller which
is not a small task. In addition, the syntax of the protocols differ for
different DJI flight controllers (DJI Naza, A2, A3) all have different protocols.
Which one should it be written for ?

The problem on the Gremsy side is that their CANLINK product which works
with the older and more professional grade gimbals has only a single serial port
which connects to the DJI CANBUS. Since they only a single serial port, it would
be much better and cleaner if they create a version of their CANLINK product that
connects only to the Pixhawk 2.1. They have already done the Gremsy to
Pixhawk interface for their T1 product which does not require the CANLINK (there
is a direct serial connection port on the mount). So they have a CANLINK product that
connects only to the Pixhawk (using one of the serial connections on the Pixhawk 2.1
- Telemetry 2 port would be ideal).

          ArduPilot at Work

We see a lot of test flight videos. Maybe some demo flights. But not too many where ArduPilot is being flown at work for commercial purposes. So I tried to capture some moments of a real-world crop scouting flight, with an ArduPilot-flown Trex 600EP flybar helicopter.

It's kind of hard to actually film the aircraft because the flight track is 1.2 miles end to end, so we can only get some shots of it making a turn at the end of a pass, and the grand finale when it comes in at the completion of the flight. So this is basically what it looks like from the ground station, flying the helicopter. I have some extra "enhancements" that the ArduPilot ground station does not provide, like long-range FPV and telemetry to the RC radio for critical operating parameters of the helicopter, with alarms that go off if headspeed drops below 1,650rpm, ESC temp exceeds 130F, servo power rail voltage drops below 5.0V, etc..

For crop scouting work, this is a low altitude flight flown at 75 feet above terrain at 22 mph ground speed. Capturing RGB imagery with a solid-mounted GoPro camera with a 122.6 x 94.4 deg FOV.
