          Busbar module and power supply unit including same busbar module   
In a busbar module for connecting a plurality of batteries of a battery unit, the batteries are arranged so that electrodes of each of the batteries having different polarities are disposed adjacent to each other. The busbar module includes a plurality of busbars, a plurality of terminals, a plurality of wires, a plurality of plates and a connector. The busbars connect the electrodes adjacent to each other. The terminals are connected to the busbars respectively to detect a voltage of the batteries. The wires are connected to the terminals respectively. The plates accommodate the busbar, the terminals and the wires, and provided above the battery unit. The connector connects the plates together.
          Connecting device   
A connecting device is configured to be fitted into twp mating electrode connectors having power source electrodes, so that the power source electrodes are electrically connected. The connecting device for connecting the power source electrodes includes a housing member having an engaging portion having a recessed shape capable of engaging with the mating electrode connector. The connecting device includes a flat terminal with a flat plate shape being held with the housing member and a flexible braided wiring member connected to the flat terminal. The flexible braided wiring member is connected to a rear end portion of another flat terminal at both end portions thereof. The flat terminals at the both end portions of the flexible braided wiring member are held at middle portions thereof with separate housing members. Both surfaces of a front end portion of the flat terminal are exposed in the engaging portion of the housing member.

(Ruhr-University Bochum) Chemists at Ruhr-Universität Bochum have developed a new method to tightly fix catalyst powders on electrode surfaces. Currently, the high physical stress induced on catalyst films by gas evolving reactions hampers the application of powder based catalysts. The developed technique is potentially interesting for hydrogen production by water electrolysis. A team from the Center for Electrochemical Sciences reports on this in the international edition of Angewandte Chemie.

The insulating materials used to develop HVDC technologies suffer from a major drawback, which is the accumulation of electrical charges forming internal space charge with possibly two major consequences: (i)-the out-of-control of the internal electric field distribution initiating current runaway and (ii)-cumulated molecular level damages extending or creating defects and leading ultimately to breakdown. To prevent space charge accumulation, one possible route, not examined in depth by the scientific community to date is to control the charge injection at the interfaces between the insulating material and the "electrodes" (metallic or semi-conducting). Different routes were followed in this work for tailoring the interface between electrode and polyethylene material, based on chemical modification of the insulation or layer intercalation. Depending on the process, charge injection control is achieved either for negative charges or for charges of both polarities. The process of charge injection control is discussed with reference to the chemical/physical modifications brought about by the different treatments. The results provide indication towards a strategy to control the injection in power cables and other electrical components.
          Effect of polarity reversal on space charge properties of CB/LDPE composite under DC field   
Voltage polarity reversal is a special condition in HVDC transmission system. In this study, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and nano-CB/LDPE composites films were manufactured, and the space charge distribution was measured under DC voltage with and without the polarity reversal respectively by pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method to reveal the doping effect of nano-CB on the space charge distribution. According to the experimental results of LDPE, before the polarity reversal, homo-charges are injected and accumulate around the electrodes, and these space charges cannot dissipate completely after the voltage polarity being reversed which resulting in more serious electric field distortion. According to the test results of CB/LDPE after voltage polarity reversal, the density of shallow trapped charges decreases whereas the density of deep trapped charges increases, and the average charge density is reduced. The LDPE with 0.03wt% of CB nanoparticles shows sound performance on inhibiting the space charge accumulation after the voltage polarity reversal.
          Effects of ambient temperature on electrical tree in epoxy resin under repetitive pulse voltage   
Chosen as an important insulation material in high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable terminal, epoxy resin bears the harsh environment of high temperature and changing pulse power. This paper reports on investigations into the effect of high temperature on characteristics of electrical tree growth. Samples made of epoxy resin and equipped with a needle-plate geometry electrode system were stressed with pulse voltage whose amplitude was 12, 14 and 16 kV and frequency was 200, 300 and 400 Hz. The ambient temperature was set to 60, 90 and 120 °C. Four types of typical tree growth process were partitioned to better describe the different growth characteristics. Typical morphology, tree length, fractal dimension, accumulated damage and expansion coefficient were employed to characterize the electrical tree. The initiation and breakdown characteristics were also analyzed. The results indicate that temperature, pulse frequency and pulse amplitude affect electrical tree growth. Higher temperature would lead to more complex tree morphology and promote the growth rate of electrical tree. When reaching the glass transition temperature, which is 93 °C in this paper, the change of internal state of epoxy resin would cause some special characteristics of tree growth. In addition, inception probability increased with temperature rising, whereas the time to breakdown decreased. Meanwhile, obtained results show that pulse frequency and pulse amplitude also play an important role in promoting electrical tree growth processes, including initiation, propagation and breakdown stages.
          Effect of temperature gradient on space charge behavior in epoxy resin and its nanocomposites   
The effect of temperature gradient on space charge behavior is necessary to investigate for HVDC insulation. In this paper, space charge distributions in neat epoxy resin (EP) and EP/SiO2 nanocomposites (NC) were measured under different DC stresses and temperature gradients. We found that different temperature conditions applied to the electrodes had a great impact on space charge distributions: Only homocharge accumulated near anode at isothermal conditions, on the contrast, at temperature gradient of 60 °C, negative charge injected from cathode (high temperature side) and accumulated in the bulk, heterocharge appeared near anode (low temperature side). Moreover, SiO2 nano-fillers added to NC could suppress the space charge accumulation significantly, and the pattern of space charge distribution in NC at temperature gradient of 60 °C also shows differently from that of EP. Numerical simulation based on the bipolar charge transport model was employed to study the experimental results. It shows that under temperature gradient, charge extraction plays an important role in heterocharge accumulation near the low temperature side. Moreover, it indicates that unlike the apparently measured conductivity, the charge mobility of NC does not increase rapidly with temperature in the range from 20 °C to 80 °C.
          Effects of mechanical stress on treeing growth characteristics in HTV silicone rubber   
Tensile and compressive stress, produced by the spring clamp device and the banding force after the expansion of silicone rubber stress cone, can affect the electrical properties of silicone rubber in the cable accessories. Electrical tree, one of the main electrical aging phenomena, is supposed to be related to the mechanical stress. In this paper, the treeing growth characteristics considering the tensile and compressive stress were investigated by the pin-plane electrode system respectively. The tensile rate of silicone rubber ranged from 0% to 30%, while the compressive rate varied from 0% to 50%. The results indicate that both the tensile stress and compressive stress affect the treeing propagation characteristics. The appearance probability of bush tree increases and it becomes the main tree structure at higher tensile rate, while branch tree turns into the main tree structure at higher compressive rate. Electrical tree initiation probability becomes higher and the initial time tends to be shorter under the tensile stress, while they show an opposite tendency under the compressive stress. Under tensile stress, the tree length, fractal dimension and accumulated damage become lager as the tensile rate increasing, which indicates that the higher tensile rate accelerates the treeing process. However, under the compressive stress, the treeing growth process shows a converse trend, which demonstrates that the higher compressive rate retards the electrical tree growth.
          Breakdown fields in synthetic air, CO2, a CO2 / O2 mixture, and CF4 in the pressure range 0.5–10 MPa   
The breakdown electric field strength in synthetic air, CO2, a mixture of CO2 and O2, and CF4 was investigated under conditions relevant for high voltage insulation systems, specifically, in nearly uniform fields and using electrodes with technical surfaces. The results show a saturation of the breakdown electric field strength above 2 MPa; this effect can be explained by streamer inception calculations. The lowest saturation breakdown electric field strengths are similar for the different gases and are in the range of 200 to 300 kV/cm. There is no change in the breakdown electric field strength if the gas becomes supercritical. This indicates that particle number density and the surface structure is the main controlling parameter for the breakdown in the investigated parameter range.
          The influence of magnitude and rise time of applied voltage and the type of oil on streamer growth in a wet-mate DC connector   
For the safe design and operation of wet-mate (WM) DC power connector, a time-dependent full thermo-electrodynamic model comprised of Poisson's equation, three charge continuity equations-one each for the positive and negative ions and one for the electrons-, and a thermal diffusion equation is developed to study the streamer initiation and propagation in the oil portion of a WM DC chamber. The electric field dependent molecular ionization mechanism accounts for the source term for free charge carriers, and positive ion/electron recombination, positive/negative ion recombination and electron attachment represent sink terms in the oil section. The solid portion of the WM DC connector is modeled as a perfect insulator. Considering a needle-sphere electrode geometry with electrodes covered by a dielectric solid and oil enclosed by the dielectric solid, it is approached the complicated solid-liquid insulation system envisaged in a WM DC connector after mating. By using the model, the influence of three parameters including magnitude and rise time of applied voltage as well as the type of oil on streamer initiation and propagation is investigated. It is found that the shorter rise time the more prominent streamer growth in the oil portion. For oil comprising only aromatics, an electric field magnitude larger than about 2×108 V/m is needed to propagate streamers, while this value for the oil comprising naphthenics/paraffinics will be exceeding 4×108 V/m.
          Assessment of interfacial charge accumulation in oil-paper interface in transformer insulation from polarization-depolarization current measurements   
Accumulation of interfacial space charge in oil-paper interface is a critical issue in insulation diagnostics of transformers. This interfacial charge mainly accumulates due to the conductivity difference of oil and paper. Accumulation of interfacial charge leads to localized field enhancement, which further leads to partial discharges and acceleration in the aging of insulation. Therefore, from the point of view of transformer insulation diagnostics, assessment of interfacial charge is very important. However, it is not easy to estimate interfacial space charge behavior from the transformer diagnostics methods currently in use. In case of Polarization-Depolarization Current (PDC) measurement, a well known method for transformer condition monitoring, the effect of interfacial charge is reflected in the non-linearity of current response during polarization and de-polarization. During de-polarization process, a part of the interfacial charge accumulated during polarization period is absorbed by the electrodes producing a current, which is difficult to separate using conventional linear dielectric theory. In this paper, an attempt has been made to separate this current component from de-polarization current through considering charge de-trapping mechanism. Terming this current component as de-trapping current, its relationship with other parameters of transformer insulation is discussed. The developed methodology has been applied on several practical transformers. It was observed that the time constant of de-trapping current is related to the paper conductivity, oil conductivity, dissipation factor and age of the insulation.
          Partition and recognition of partial discharge development stages in oil-pressboard insulation with needle-plate electrodes under combined AC-DC voltage stress   
Partition and Recognition of the partial discharge (PD) development stages in oil-pressboard insulation under AC-DC combined voltage stress are the bases for analysis of the insulation faults in converter transformers. In this paper, behavior of different characteristic parameters of the PD activity recorded in the oil-pressboard insulation with needle-plate electrodes is investigated. Beside the known characteristic parameters like amplitude of apparent charge in pC, frequency of occurrence of PD pulse, PD pattern (PRPD-pattern), additional parameters were defined to describe the PD development processes under AC-DC combined voltage stress. Additional parameters are: pulse equivalent time, pulse equivalent frequency and equivalent time-frequency pattern (ETF-pattern). According to the time-variation trends of these characteristic parameters the PD development process can be divided into five stages: initial stage (IS), transition stage (TS), developing stage (DS), steady stage (SS), and pre-breakdown stage (PS). In these five stages the PRPD pattern and ETF pattern have different shapes and characteristics. For the analysis of PRPD pattern and ETF pattern the wavelet moment invariants are extracted. Based on these new features the PD development stages can be recognized using the least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) with the particle swarm optimization (PSO). The recognition rate is about 94%. Finally the possible physical effects of the identified PD development stages in the oil pressboards insulation under AC-DC combined voltage stress are also discussed in this paper.

Photo-stimulated discharge (PSD) method is one of the ways to measure the trap level of space charge in the dielectric materials. Compared with the thermally stimulated discharge (TSD) method, it has no observable destroy to the sample's microstructure during the procedure of the light scanning and can therefore be considered to be a more accurate measuring method. However, the light scanning procedure may possibly lead to the occurrence of the external photoelectric effect between the electrode-dielectric interfaces or the internal photoelectric effect in the sample bulk, where the extra current due to the two photoelectric effects can seriously distort the PSD current. In this paper, the total current excited by the scanning light on the polarized or being polarized polyimide films are studied. The influence of the applied field intensity, the electrode structures, the evaporated electrode thickness and the isothermal decaying current of the polarized films on the stimulated current is evaluated, which is comprehensively analyzed to extract the space charge dependent PSD current from the distorted current. The charge trap level based on the PSD method is finally obtained.
          Fractal-based electric field enhancement modeling of vacuum gap electrodes   
The objective of this paper is to study the characteristics of the microscopic electric field enhancement at the micro-projections on the contact surface based on the fractal modeling of the micro-projections in vacuum interrupters. In this paper, the distortions of the microscopic electric field caused by the micro-projections were studied in the case of the applied voltage 60 kV and the contact gap 2 mm. Moreover, the microscopic enhancement factor βm for the various micro-projections with the height-radius ratio being less than or equal to 50 were investigated. First, the basic Weirstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) fractal function was introduced and simplified into the modeling of the various micro-projections with the height-radius ratio 0.2, 0.4, 1, 2, 10 and 50 respectively. Then, the electric field distributions were analyzed based on these micro-projection fractal models. The simulation results showed that the micro-projections would cause a distortion of the microscopic electric field at the micro-projections on the contact surface, especially in the case of the higher height-radius ratio. In this paper, with the height-radius ratio of the micro-projections increasing from 0.2 to 50, the microscopic enhancement factor βm based on the fractal models would increase from 16 to 3667. In comparison with the idealized ellipsoid model, to the same height-radius ratio of the micro-projection, the microscopic enhancement factor βm based on the fractal models was about four times higher than that based on the ellipsoid models. Furthermore, the microscopic electric field at the micro-projections would have a significant influence on the micro-particles impact phenomena and other microscopic physical phenomena which could give rise to the vacuum breakdown. The results could provide some useful information to understand the physical mechanism to trigger the vacuum breakdown.
          DC electrical tree growth in epoxy resin and the influence of the size of inceptive AC trees   
Electrical tree propagation is a precursor to dielectric failure in high voltage polymeric insulation. Tree growth has been widely studied under AC conditions, but its behavior under DC is not well understood. The aim of this work was to examine the importance of polarity and initiating defect size on DC tree propagation. Electrical tree propagation in epoxy resin under constant DC voltages of +60 kV and −60 kV was measured in samples with classical needle-plane electrodes, but with small initial trees (< 100 μm) incepted under lower AC voltages before the DC tests. Experimental results showed strong polarity dependence. In either polarity, the length of the initial AC tree had a major influence on the inception of the subsequent DC tree. The effect was attributed to the defect being influential if it is larger than the space charge injection region. As a consequence, there is a critical defect size that will accelerate failure of DC insulation dependent on space charge injection behavior of the polymer/electrode system in question — a critical finding for high voltage asset management.

          Electrosurgical Generator: Cameron Miller 255   
Here's a weird one:

This is a picture of a Cameron-Miller 255, an electrosurgical generator. It is used for different kinds of surgery, including cutting and cauterization. It accomplishes this by heating up the tissue between the electrodes with current, in the range of 0-100 watts. It's pretty easy to tell that this was made a while back because it is constructed from more modern ones, but the label was removed and a quick search reveals no results.

There might be some useful parts inside which could be reused, but I think it is best left off until someone figures out a use for it. Any ideas?

A couple more clues. Used carbide can be had at just about any machine shop. They will save broken tools in a coffee can to scrap at a later date. Get the broken carbide end mills, 1/8-1/4 dia. as the shanks are perfectly to size(just under nominlal size). Drill, ream, press in.Diamond wheel to a point, by hand after you get the hang of it, woo hoo. I would think they would sell to a guy asking. They used to get $2.50 lb but I think the price is really low now. The other clue, Diamond tools cut it like butter. Now the Tungsten Welding electrode rod is ground to size. The hard part would be cutting it to length. There again a diamond saw should work. Being as those are ground. All that's needed then, is a under sized drill, a reamer who's diameter matches the electrode size or .0002" smaller. Then your there. I don't think there's much that will stop carbide with enough power behind it. One would have to experiment with the tip shape, and length, inserted too long and I would think it may bounce back through the soft bullet base. Don't know just guessing. like I said, Carbide cuts like butter with diamond tools. The tungsten electrode isn't as hard and can be ground on a regular belt sander or grinding wheel. Thats a good clue,as to which is better suited. Carbide needs a harder wheel to do the same. Green wheel or diamond. Preferably diamond.

I've seen this around. It's unfortunate that it's dead.

There are more confounding factors in the nematode project than with just a petri dish. You have to worry about the whole nematode if you want to verify your results. It's also harder to 'read' a single neuron in action.

With a petri dish it would be possible to have an electrode in every neuron. Because the neurons are splayed out imaging techniques might be able to yield some insight into the internal chemical states of the neurons.

An uploaded nematode would be great, but an uploaded petri dish seems like a more tractable and logical first step.

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based spintronics devices, each including a TMD thin film layer, a first gate electrode, a first insulating layer sandwiched between the TMD thin film layer and the first gate electrode, a second gate electrode, and a second insulating layer sandwiched between the TMD thin film layer and the second gate electrode. Such a device, when also including a source electrode and a drain electrode, functions as a spin filter. On the other hand, when also including one source electrode and two drain electrode terminals, such a device functions as a spin separator. Also disclosed are methods of using the above-described TMD-based spintronics devices.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the hypothesis that the vagina generates electric waves which effect vaginal contraction during penile thrusting.METHODS: In 24 healthy female volunteers, the electric waves of the vagina were recorded by two electrodes applied to its wall. The vaginal pressure was registered by a manometric tube. The electric waves and vaginal pressure were recorded at rest and on vaginal distension by condom in increments of 10 ml of carbon dioxide. The test was repeated after vaginal anesthetization proximally and distally to the electrodes.

RESULTS: Slow waves (SWs) were recorded from the two electrodes with regular rhythm and similar frequency, amplitude and conduction velocity. They were randomly followed or superimposed by action potentials (APs). Vaginal pressure increase was coupled with APs. Large-volume condom distension significantly increased the electric waves’ variables and pressure. Upon vaginal anesthetization, the electric waves were recorded proximal but not distal to the anesthetized area.

CONCLUSIONS: Electric waves could be recorded from the vagina. They spread caudad. A pacemaker was postulated to exist at the upper vagina evoking these waves. The electric waves seem to be responsible for the vaginal contractile activity. Large-volume vaginal distension effected an increase in the vaginal electric waves and pressure which probably denotes increased vaginal muscle contraction. It appears that penile thrusting during coitus stimulates the vaginal pacemaker which effects an increase in vaginal electric activity and muscle contractility and thus leading to an increase in sexual arousal. The vaginal pacemaker seems to represent the G spot, which is claimed to be a small area of erotic sensitivity in the vagina. The electrovaginogram may act as a diagnostic tool in the investigation of sexual disorders.” [source]

Abstract
AIMS: Transplantation of a tissue engineered cardiac pacemaker (TECP) may represent a novel therapy for cardiac sinus node dysfunction. We previously reported that cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) derived from embryonic heart tubes could differentiate into cardiac pacemaking cells after endothelin-1 treatment. We aimed to examine the feasibility of TECP fabricated from CPCs-derived pacemaking cells and vascularization of TECP fabricated from CPCs-derived pacemaking cells and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in vitro and in vivo implantation.
MAIN METHODS: TECP created using CPCs-derived pacemaking cells and vTECP created by mixing CPCs and EPCs in vitro were implanted into rat hearts. Sinus node damaged was induced by formaldehyde insult.
KEY RESULTS: Spontaneous beating tissues, namely TECP, were obtained after seeding CPCs-derived pacemaking cells into Matrigel. ECG and epicardial multielectrode array (MEA) measurements confirmed implanted TECP have electrical activity. TECP implantation promoted individual survival in sinus node damage models (15/22 animals lived versus 0/17 control). vTECP fabricated by mixing the both EPCs and CPCs-derived pacemaking cells with Matrigel in equal proportions optimally formed pre-vascularization in vitro. The implantation of vTECP enhanced electrical activity in vivo, which may correlate with increased vascularization. PI3K-Akt-VEGF/VEGFR signaling was involved with vascular ingrowth in vTECP.
SIGNIFICANCE: Our data supports the therapeutic potential of TECP fabricated with the CPCs-derived pacemaking cells for sinus node dysfunction. Vascularization by the addition of EPCs is an important factor to sustain viability of the TECP in vivo.

Abstract
Recent progress in understanding the structure of neural representations in the cerebral cortex has centred around the application of multivariate classification analyses to measurements of brain activity. These analyses have proved a sensitive test of whether given brain regions provide information about specific perceptual or cognitive processes. An exciting extension of this approach is to infer the structure of this information, thereby drawing conclusions about the underlying neural representational space. These approaches rely on exploratory data-driven dimensionality reduction to extract the natural dimensions of neural spaces, including natural visual object and scene representations, semantic and conceptual knowledge, and working memory. However, the efficacy of these exploratory methods is unknown, because they have only been applied to representations in brain areas for which we have little or no secondary knowledge. One of the best-understood areas of the cerebral cortex is area MT of primate visual cortex, which is known to be important in motion analysis. To assess the effectiveness of dimensionality reduction for recovering neural representational space we applied several dimensionality reduction methods to multielectrode measurements of spiking activity obtained from area MT of marmoset monkeys, made while systematically varying the motion direction and speed of moving stimuli. Despite robust tuning at individual electrodes, and high classifier performance, dimensionality reduction rarely revealed dimensions for direction and speed. We use this example to illustrate important limitations of these analyses, and suggest a framework for how to best apply such methods to data where the structure of the neural representation is unknown.
